I'm so glad you liked The Secret Garden, because it is my all time favorite book. (I've read it at least 18 times from when I was a child until now at 25 & even got to teach it to a literature class of 6th grade girls.) As for the problematic attitudes towards Indian people and servants, I've always seen it as part of what shows that Mary is not a "good person" at the beginning of the story. Also, the reason she was described as "yellow" was because she spent all of her time inside and on the sickly side. But I really, wholeheartedly love the character growth in this book. This book is just...fundamental to who I am as a person now, and I'm trying to remind myself that I do NOT need to own ALL the copies.

So I was listening to the audiobook of And Then There Were None doing twitter sprints for The Bookie Trials Royal Weekend and during the breaks I was slowly watching this video. I finished the sprints and then the book and then came back to finish this. My best friend had read the book when she was barely in high school maybe middle school and I asked if she remembered the way a Jewish man is described in the beginning and she said, “No?” and was shocked when I told her about it. I rated And Then There Were None 4 stars because of that terrible description being unnecessary to the plot. Then as I’m trying to cool down from an otherwise enjoyable thriller, I got to around the 18 minute mark in your video. I love when you take the time to discuss how people absorb what they read at various stages (something you also do during the videos when you read suggestions). Your insight gives validity to a lot of uncomfortable reading. The fact that you acknowledge these things is something that I value most highly in anyone who reads. I just wanted to say I love your videos and this moment hit me extremely strongly just at the perfect time. It doesn’t excuse such descriptions, but it does show how it’s possible for younger people to see the good and not dwell on those things. As adults, I do think we owe it to ourselves and others to acknowledge these things and the different possible reactions of when you read them.
@sarahteter5244 жыл бұрын
I completely agree that just because a book is dubbed a Classic, that doesn’t mean we necessarily need to read them today. I do think there are important and interesting things to learn or take from them, but problematic things should be acknowledged and questioned.
