I’m all biased when it comes to books. I read books for what they make me feel, so once they have made me feel something I mostly can’t care less about writing style or anything else. Specially if I love the character, I will stick with them FOREVER even if I know that from the outside it is probably not the best book from the outside.

This happened to me with Name of the Wind. I remembering hearing my favourite book tuber (who goes by the alias, "Elliot Brooks") say it was not that great of a read and that she couldn't really say why it was as popular as it was. I avoided it for quite a while, but during a lull, I decided it wouldn't hurt just to give it a try. I couldn't get into the narrative for several chapters. It wasn't until about a third of the way through the book that I started warming up to it. Now, it is easily one of my favourite books. Taste, perspective, context. But the greatest of these is taste (and I still trust hers).

I think any series that I fall in love with it's hard to be objective about new installments. I think that's evident in how later books in serieses usually have higher ratings (plus people who love the series are more likely to read on).

I'm biased about anything Tolkien, the world is so rich and I have so much respect for the author. I can't read a quote by Gandalf or hear a song from the movie without tearing up. :) I think the theme of death that recurs in his works is a probably a result of his experiences in WW1 and 2. War is harder on sensitive artists. LOTR and Silmarillion is a reflection (I think) of him trying to make sense of death. That's something I strongly relate to.

Great topic! It made me look deeper into some of my favourites and whether there's some bias there I think I have some bias for The Wicher like you, but for a different reason - I'm Polish, so having a series with such recognition internationally and coming from my homeland means a lot to me And then I'm also quite obsessed with dragons, so having a dragon POV in a story (Wings of Fire) really enhanced my enjoyment I still think both are very good regardless, but the bias is there too

Funny, I was JUST having these thoughts this morning. I'm biased with what I refer to "High-Class Sass" books. I even made a Goodreads shelf for it. Books like Devil Wears Prada, Bergdorf Blondes, etc. I read to escape from my intensely social physically demanding full time job. And I just want to be happy right now.

My book that I'm biased towards is Twilight because that is the book that ignited my love for reading and I made so many friends because of it. Now that I'm older, I don't think I would like it as much now but it's nostalgic for me and has a special place in heart that I would still find reasons to love it.

Well i guess i'm heavily biased on Sanderson. I realised it when i started Warbreaker and in the beginning i was worried it's going in certain places i wasn't expecting Sanderson to go, but even then i told myself "well it's Sanderson, it has to be good". And i can't even begin to imagine the pressure our expectations must be putting on this man.

Mid-video, so you may get to this, but I think one of the forms of bias that's most prevalent but unacknowledged in bookish circles is in subgenres/tropes. I'm biased towards epic, drawn out, high fantasy - which would be a horrible recommendation for my husband.

I definitely have quite a few biases, though I think of them as triggers that make me pick up the book without much thinking because I really believe I will have no choice but to love it. If that then does not happen, it tends to hit me very hard :) Some of my triggers/biases: London setting (Victorian or Edwardian especially), (secret) library setting, Irish/Scottish/Celtic themes, witches, phoenixes, dragons, Halloween, penny dreadfuls/gothic themes, revenge tales, assassin tales, powerful female characters (especially morally grey ones), anything written by E.A. Poe, Oscar Wilde, Agatha Christie, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Jojo Moyes, Neil Gaiman, Jay Kristoff and Cassandra Clare (off the top of my head), retellings of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, A Christmas Carol; and these are just the ones I thought of while watching your video :D

Bias exists and it's silly to pretend that it doesn't. People can attempt to be as objective as possible but there is almost always going to be personal bias involved. Especially in the scenario you mentioned of loving an author and/or meeting them, that person is definitely going to be biased when covering their content. That is fine though! Bias is normal. You brought up the Witcher and I definitely share that bias with you as I played all of the games prior to watching the show or reading any of the books. I went into The Last Wish loving The Witcher because of the games.

For myself, I find that I have a bias towards anything that gets compared to Brent Weeks. Everyone has a bias, whether they want to admit it or not, whether it comes to books or music or movies; it’s just part of human nature. I think, nowadays, it’s a matter of recognizing unintentional biases versus having intentional biases. That, furthermore, gets muddled with the validity of criticism: for instance, an intentional bias of not liking science fiction would greatly skew someone’s critique of a work that has science fiction elements. If that all makes sense.

I love Studio Ghibli, so I was biased towards Howl's Moving Castle when I started it earlier this year. Wonderful book regardless. Stardust is one of my favourite movies; I'd watched this prior to reading the book. Naturally I'll read anything by Neil Gaiman now, but I went into that novel with a huge bias. So if I come to the book late but enjoyed the adaptations (either TV, movies or video games), I'm going have a bias. Currently reading Metro 2033 (biased), and have The Last Wish (biased) lined up...

I think having biases is a natural part of reading, the most objective one can be is when reviewing, saying goods and bads regardless of your opinion. Also they can be great when they make you love a book more, but awful when you hate it. I have a couple of books I'm biased towards that I can think of. Firstly there are my childhood favourites, Skulduggery Pleasant and the Bartimaeus trilogy. I will always maintain that they are genuinely incredible books, but how much my nostalgia plays into that I couldn't say. Similarly there's The Shadowhunter Chronicles. I think the later books in the series are genuinely great, but I probably wouldn't enjoy The Mortal Instruments if I read it for the first time today, but I think fondly on it because of nostalgia. Then there's that time back in 2016 when I started reading gay books for the first time. I rated like all of them 5 stars, and I wondered at the time if they were actually that great or if I was just excited to be reading gay stories and overlooked their problems. I still don't know the answer. Then there's Wonders of the Invisible World by Christopher Barzak, my favourite book of all time. Is it the greatest book of all time? I don't know, but it spoke to my soul in a way no other book ever has, so it is to me.

Biased? Oh, for sure. I'm totally biased towards anime vs manga. Because - pretty colors! ✨✨✨ (and voice acting and awesome openings and endings and animation etc etc) I don't know a single manga where I preferred it to its anime. Same goes if I know that the story has a trope that I love (oh, a pirate story? yay!), I already like it in advance, basically hyping it up for myself? 🤔 Opposite of it also happens, just less, since if a story has a trope I utterly despise, I'm way less likely to pick it up at all

I kind of object to the word bias. It's enjoying an author, finding his/her work entertaining. This is art, a personal preference, some aspects to be loved, and by a different person loathed. You should never have to apologise for your taste. Relish the book, smell the pages, breathe in the characters, their trials, their triumphs... It's not an objective, some aspects will date poorly, other well. Some dismiss entire genres. I'm biased against certain phenomenons of shows. I've never seen (nor will ever see): Game of Thrones; Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc... Yeah... That's my loss. I'll live with it. A guilty confession, I read the first book, of A song of fire and ice when it first came out in hardback. Was in the middle of 'Wheel of Time', so didn't even consider continuing it...

I think it's fair to assume that everyone has biases, whether it's be towards authors, genres, tropes, nostalgia or something else. I just hope people who review books when they are friends with the author/do a paid review or something similar double check their opinions for a bias. As for unknown biases or inclinations, it takes a lot of self reflection to find and identify these. I wish reviewers would maybe do this a bit more but so far, I've never seen anyone actively lie whether outside influences changed their opinion on a book.

Biases on books, stories and other literary pieces are built up by bits and pieces coming from our preferences, cultural background and influence, and deepest aspirations. I usually am fond of star-crossed tales involving unlikely or a ragtag bunch of characters rising to the occasion when getting mixed up in an interplanetary and intergalactic conflict. Sounds like a typical sci-fi trope but I honestly have my interest drawn effortlessly to such kind of entertainment. 🤓

I'm very biased towards 'The Feline Wizardry' trilogy by Diane Duane (and in general, anything Diane Duane writes because she is my all-time favorite author). The trilogy is one that takes place in the same world as The Young Wizards series, which is my all-time favorite series. I gave all three of the Feline Wizardry books 5 stars when honestly, especially the third one, I probably should have given them less than that, but I'd gone into that trilogy pretty much already decided that 'Nope. I know I love Foundryside so much because of my previous special experience with certain buildings of objects from which I could perceive... let's say "vibes", I don't have a better word. Even so, had I hated the execution, the characters etc, I wouldn't have given this book 5 stars. Shadow of the Fox is a totally different example - I would have liked it much, much more if I hadn't had previous knowledge of the folklore, myths, legends etc of Japan, South Korea, and China. To me, the book brought nothing new. It was like a mosaic of scenes I had seen before. I needed some originality. I do realize that someone who is not familiar with that specific folklore would love Shadow of the Fox and the rest of the trilogy. Another thing that often changes our perception of a book is when we read a translation. A translation may be correct, yet fail to convey the style and subtleties of the text. Or, in very rare cases, it may make it better. I can mention Henriette Yvonne Stahl's translation of Wuthering Heights into Romanian - it's better than the original. In most cases, however, a lot gets lost in translation. My Romanian version of Romeo and Juliet, for instance, struggles to keep the flowery, poetical style of the text, failing to convey the intention and making it hard to follow. An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against the Night are horrible in Romanian. Under Heaven, however, is almost as good in Romanian as it is in English, but - in general - I wouldn't say this happens very often. I've mentioned Romanian versions so far, but Romanian is not an international language, so you may think it's not easy to translate something into Romanian. I've read books translated into other languages, though, and my conclusion has been the same. The Water-Method Man, by John Irving - I read it in French. Again: it was not an incorrect translation (in terms of grammar and vocabulary), but it had nothing to do with John Irving's style, which I know particularly well. I also read The Pillars of the Earth in Spanish. This one, surprisingly enough, sounded slightly better than the original, which may have been the reason for its popularity in Spain.

I’m biased for a LOT of authors that I know personally. Carol Berg, lady fantasy author, she is such delightful people and she’s reasonably well recognized in the insider reading community in her home state of Colorado, but she deserves so much more. Aaron Michael Ritchey. Also from Colorado, I’m SUPER biased because he bought and published my short story online, but his YA adventure stuff is nuts. Check out ARMAGEDDON GIRLS, you will not be sorry. Amanda Booloodian, writing light urban (rural?) fantasy chick lit, I would never have read her if I didn’t know her. Instead I’ve read her entire AIR series twice, and I think she’s just as good as the top authors in her genre. She joined a paranormal collection ebook called The Shadow Files and in my educated but biased opinion her book OATH BOUND is head and shoulders above the rest of the collection. C.J. Weiland, with hard sci-fi, gets into AI and SWATing and surveillance and online identity... I would have lost it in the shuffle if I hadn’t known him and I’d have missed out. B.K. Boes. OMG. Brooks, please please PLEASE read MOTHER OF REBELLION. Self published epic fantasy, she’s a woman, she’s a Sanderson fan, you guys have so much in common. Her book was a semi finalist in the Dragon Awards, just look it up you won’t regret it I swear. Then there’s J.C. Ahern. I cannot explain why I love her style but I do. So much that I edited her second book and she’s letting me write a prequel. PAWN and ROYALS, check it out. The third, SIEGE, and the completely unnecessary prequel ZUGZWANG are in the works.

Alyssa In Wonderland ME TOO! Her books have some issues (lack of diversity and when she finally includes it it's badly done, repetitive writing style, cringey animal noises) but I am so attached to her books and the characters in them. So many people hate on her books and it's fine to not like them, but I often feel so judged.

I feel like's it's impossible to be 100% objective about books because reading is a subjective experience. We are all pre-loaded with biases, but I do think it's important to be aware of them in ourselves. This is such an interesting topic. It definitely goes with hype and cancel culture too. People start reading a story and commenting on it negatively (ie Twilight or A Court of Thorns and Roses) and everyone wants to get on the hate train and the people who like those stories are then shamed for liking them. Or vice versa where everyone loves something and then a person who doesn't feels "scared" to oppose everyone who does. People get so intense about things they love and hate. Those are extreme examples, but I see it a lot. People having to start reviews with "Don't come at me, but..." I'm guilty of doing that myself! Sometimes I'm just amazed how seriously people take something like a fictional book and rip people apart for not agreeing with them about how wonderful it is. I love books too, but damn.

I have never met anyone who has had interactions with an author (more than just getting an autograph), that were not biased towards that author's works... Even reviewers (thought they usually claim they aren't biased). That being said, and not to stir up a Murder Hornets nest, WAAAAAY too many people let their political ideology/agenda influence their praise of a book (once again, this is too common in reviewers/critics). I am sick of awful books getting good reviews because the reviewers share the ideology. Too many books these days seem to just be checking off a list of political and social ideas just so they win brownie points from the public. No, I do not fit into either extreme of the political spectrum (I'm a moderate). And I might be misremembering things. But I recall that many of the "classics" and older books were loved for their prose, character, story, etc... but not for their political ideology. I've read reviews from when many books were originally published, and many reviewers would admit that they disagree with the message, but the book is beautifully written, etc... These days, if a reviewer agrees with the social statement or ideology of the book, it could be written by a 3rd grader, and the review will be glowing. Same going the other way. Reviewers will hate a well written book if the ideology is counter to their own. This just frustrates me to no end. In fiction, telling a good story should ALWAYS come first. Just my 2 cents.

I think everyone's biased but no one wants to admit it 😂 like I love fantasy, so I'll review fantasy more favourably! I don't love thrillers as much so I tend to be more critical because I'm not enjoying it as much to start with...

I'm so biased towards SJM books. The writing is often repetitive and cringey and I recognize that there are many issues with them, but her books came at a time when I really needed some escapism and I got super super attached to the characters and the worlds (I mean she has a cult following for a reason). All that being said, booktube is sometimes very judgmental towards people who like her books and I don't think that's fair. People are allowed to enjoy whatever type of books they want, and I think as long as you can acknowledge the shortcomings of the books and the authors, it's ok.
