Steeped in history and whispering tales of past residents, Boonburrh House transcends the typical concept of a home. Nestled in Noosa Heads, Australia, it overlooks the idyllic Laguna Bay and marks the gateway to Noosa National Park. Inspired by Geoffrey Bawa's visionary work and a Sri Lankan residence, the house unfolds as a series of interconnected spaces, each embracing the surrounding beauty.
Clad in a subdued material palette, Boonburrh House seamlessly integrates with the existing landscape, minimizing disruption to the flourishing flora. Designed by Frank Macchia and CLO Studios, it redefines the concept of shelter, extending its boundaries beyond the confines of traditional walls.
With a focus on outward vistas and effortless access, the home, built by Robilliard Building & Design, fosters a deep connection with nature. Steven Clegg Design's curated landscape, meticulously maintained by Serene Gardens, seamlessly blends native species with structured elements, transforming the outdoors into an extension of the living space, drawing residents outward. Operable walls and strategically placed screens promote natural ventilation and bathe the interior in soft, natural light, further enhancing the interplay between the dark, textured finishes and the surrounding environment.
A departure from conventional residential layouts, Boonburrh House adopts a labyrinthine approach, reminiscent of a secluded hotel or cabin. Inspired by its Sri Lankan influences, the traditional grouping of rooms is replaced by a more fluid, explorative arrangement, where each function is connected through a series of pathways. This, coupled with the materiality and ambiance, imbues the home with a sense of discovery, dismantling preconceived notions and presenting a unique architectural experience.
Boonburrh House stands as a testament to the power of place, drawing a new narrative from its past and the surrounding landscape. Through a thoughtful and richly textured design, Frank Macchia and CLO Studios have transformed this location into an idyllic sanctuary, optimized for connection and exploration.
