After installing the Micro-Air EasyStart 364 soft start we are able to start and run our RV air conditioner using a small Westinghouse iGen2500 inverter generator. Now we can run our air conditioning while boondocking and dry camping without having to lug around a huge generator that is large enough to start our air conditioner on it's own. This solution saves us precious storage space, costs less, is more fuel efficient, and is quieter.

I bet they won’t even add it for you because they only administer the warranty for the ac they aren’t the manufacturer of the add on units. So you would be out of luck and the dealer or the Rv manufacturer isn’t going to pay for the repair or replacement if an easy start were added onto the ac unit.

Excellent DIY video. Most people - including a majority of KZfaqrs - don't appreciate how much forethought, planning and effort are required to produce a video describing something potentially complicated in a way that is not only accurate, but also clearly presented and enjoyable to watch. You definitely have the formula dialed in. Kudos and keep up the good work!

@oldyeller9849
@oldyeller9849 6 жыл бұрын
David - because you might find it interesting let me add a little context about the video production comment. I've been watching a wide range of videos on KZfaq for a few years now and witnessed the full gamut: crappy content+lousy production, crappy content+decent production, good content+crappy production, good content+good production, and then the comparatively rare stuff like yours: especially good, relevant content, well presented, properly lit, good audio, captions or character gen if needed, restrained editing (not jumpy or too much fancy fades and wipes, etc). It takes a lot to get there. I haven't produced or published a single video on KZfaq but did do some video production back in the mid to late 80's on the old-school equipment in use just before NLE became the standard. The ENG grade cameras and all the related gear were heavy and cumbersome and a complete nuisance to get all set up. And you can probably imagine the kind of gear you needed to make moving camera shots. As far as post, the old style A-B roll editing suites were mind bogglingly complicated and tightly scheduled. I am not and was not a professional, just a hobbyist using the facilities of the local cable access channel. If I did everything myself: planning, shooting and editing, it required an average of 10 hours of my time for each minute of finished video. Hope that helps you and others that might read this to appreciate the power of these tools you have at your disposal now. By the way - I'm also an avid RVer, we have an old but great motorhome that we've done lots of improvements on, that's how I tripped on your channel. Safe travels.

@rickeads6160
@rickeads6160 4 жыл бұрын
@@prepperjonpnw6482 Agreed. Also, heat guns are not very expensive. If you plan on doing work like this, get one and have a selection of heat shrink tubing of different sizes on hand and avoid the use of electrical tape where heat shrink tubing can be used instead. Also, learn to solder correctly. I've found a good solder bond between stranded wire pairs of 14-12 gauge works better the the crimp connectors, and then wrap them with heat shrink tubing. I've repaired many crimp joints on small wires that failed over time and were reported as intermittent electrical problems or main unit failures. I've never had to redo one of my soldered splices. Once and done is what you want IMO.

Thanks for the video. My Coleman Mach was almost an exact knock off of your installation, except I had to remove the extra starter cap. Since the mounting strap was already loose, by moving the remaining caps to the rear panel in the enclosure, there was room to hard mount the case with screws on the front panel. No tape. Superb! Between this video and the one from MicroAir, it went pretty smoothly. Runs so quietly! Also thank you to the anonymous camper in Taos NM who first told me about the EasyStart he was running in his Casita.

Thanks for the video. Very nice. I have heard of these easy start devices yet used the opposite approach to cooling with a generator. My 26 foot cargo trailer conversion has R23 insulation and is cooled by a 5000 btu window unit cleverly hidden away. I was suprised to discover the cheap A/C I purchased has some sort of soft-start capabilty built in so I can run it with my Honda Eu1000 generator. Everyone said I was crazy over-insulating but I love the result. If you remodel...think thick insulation! It is also very quiet inside. I paid a lot for my cargo trailer yet...it is depreciating very slowly and I am happily living in it. Of couse the conversion is never finished...my work continues.

I finally installed this this morning, although I've had the Easy Start for a couple of months. Your directions were exactly what I needed and your wiring schematic is exactly the same as mine! One thing to note, my Easy Start came with spade connectors already installed on the wires that need them, a logical and nice addition! I was able to make room on the back wall to mount the unit with screws but had to relocate the existing ground wire for it to fit. After the installation and starting it 5 times as outlined, I plugged my shore cord into the outlet I installed that goes to the inverter, turned on the inverter and then turned on the air conditioner. My 400Ah of LiFePo4 batteries and 2000w Renogy Pure Sine Wave inverter started and ran the Air Conditioner! It was drawing about 100amps from the batteries initially, then settled to 83amps as the solar panels started to charge the batteries simultaneously before I turned it off. I get about 30amps peak charging so I should be able to run the air about 5 hours (70A x 5 hrs = 350Ah) before being concerned about having enough amps for night time needs.

David, thank you for your MicroAir Easy Start 364 detailed installation video! I just finished successfully installing mine by pausing your video at each step on my phone while on the roof of my travel trailer. My AC is the exact same one as yours so other than having to work around my solar panel, installation was a breeze. Watching your video was much better than trying to read the itty bitty text on the paper that came with my Micro-Air. I'm using a Champion dual-fuel 2000 watt generator on LPG and it works great with the Micro-Air 364 to start my AC or run the microwave. Love not having to carry gas around in the bed of my truck. Safe travels and thanks again!

@AlHutchings 6 жыл бұрын
You should always be careful when dealing with capacitors. The capacitor will drain naturally over time if allowed to remain de-energized but you should never rely on this. the capacitor should be shorted across the common and it's other terminal/terminals. An insulated screwdriver should be used and care should be taken not to introduce yourself into the circuit.

There is another one under a different brand for under $100 and it does the same thing.. Of course me having a strong electronics background I built mine from an arduino and some support hardware for under $30 but I dont reccomend that unless you know what you are doing because of the whole line voltage thing etc..

If I have problems in the install I will have to watch this again....and most likely again.... Then I'll message you for help!! I know how to turn on light switches and that is about it when it comes to power. Thanks for making it look like something I can do!!

This looks like a great product, and you illustrated the install nicely! I was surprised they didn't include the pre -work step of 'discharging the capacitors to ground'. Even with shore power disconnected, a capacitor can sometimes be charged and 'bite' you in my experience. Glad you didn't get bit! : )

Nicely done video, straight to the point and very professional! I used it to install my Easy Start today. The only thing that through me for a loop was that our Coleman has a heat pump, so I contacted Micro Air to see where the black wire from the compressor should be tied into, since our black wire was not spliced together with the purple one. MicroAir said to splice our black wire from the compressor into the black wire that is going into our outdoor temp relay. Just did our 5 setup runs and it works beautifully. Thanks for putting together such an easy to follow video. Take care and safe travels!

Great video. You did a great job at explaining each step of the install. The only recommendation that I have is to at least get a couple of screws to secure the Easy Start box. With the direct sunlight and the black plastic shroud, the temps in that compartment will get extremely hot and soften the double stick tape and the weight of the Easy Start will pul away and fall on to the A/C wiring and connections. It will cause shorts or even fire. Use self short self tap screws or drill straight thru and use nuts and bolts.

I actually was watching this specifically because I have Coleman Mach A/C's on my travel trailer, and wanted to see what was going to be involved before I pulled the trigger. Looks a lot less intimidating than I thought it might be. Then realized you had a promo code too. Ordered them just after watching the video and saved $50.00. Quite awesome! Even with shipping, it still beat Amazon's price by over $80!

Something else that helps your generator get things going is to select high fan. Once the fan is wound up, quickly turn to low cool. That way the generator is only powering the compressor, because the fan is decelerating during start up. It works for me
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 жыл бұрын
The EasyStart actually does this automatically when you turn the A/C on. It starts the fans, then after a 5 second delay it engages the air conditioner so that the generator can adjust for the fans first so its not as big of a spike when the air conditioner kicks in.

I would suggest following the manufacturers suggestion and mounting the EasyStart outside the connection space. I'm not sure if the ones shipped now with the clear cover are bigger. The ones I received did not fit in the space, but mounted easily just below the wire entry grommet. They supply plenty of wire to neatly route them. Also it would be helpful to have some butyl sealant tape handy instead of reusing the old sealant.

Just installed mine today, these things are AWESOME. So today i wanted to test it and see what it could do. I am able to run all my lights (including external), my tv, amazon dot, wifi ranger, dlink security camera, my refrigerator (using electric) and the AC wide open and fan on high, using my Westinghouse 2200XLI in eco mode. for 5 HOURS (1.5 gallons), all though it was a little cooler today so did not have to cycle the AC as often, it still had the camper at 60 degrees. I guess my point is, while having more fuel would be nice if the AC has to run more on a hotter day, the generator was able to handle ALL of it with out any issues with the easy start installed

Micro-Air is at it again. They've invented the EasyTouch RV, a new thermostat control for A/C with WiFi and Bluetooth capacity to be released this Spring. See their Facebook for more information --and also RV Electricity on FB. It's for the aftermarket. The EasyStart no longer stands alone as Micro-Air's only RV product. These two pair well.

Don't forget to take compressed air and blow the dust out of your condenser coil while you have the cover off and you can access the fan and blow dust out of all exterior components...Huge efficiency boost. all A/C units need this every 4-6 months of continuous use.
