The old Corvairs had a different form of boost control. They had no wastegate or blow off valve, they used a small carburetor. A small side draft Carter YH (about 1 5/16" if memory serves). Which, on my 65 turbo promptly replaced with a Weber DCOE with 28mm chokes. The small carb not only controlled boost but make it very slow to build. It was a pain to tune but damn did it make power. Now with electronic control and FI it's amazing what turbos can do.

If you have a manual boost controller laying around you can plumb it in with the n75 valve. If you have the problem with the n75 valve and the boost controller together but not with the mbc on it's own you'll know what your problem is. At least on my friends 03 Audi TT 225hp that was the case.

Not all turbos waste gates work the same, newer models now works with vacum which is made by a vacum pump and electronicaly controled via engine management, you simply cannot use a leak offen valve as it waste gate needs vacum to close and not vacum to open.

This is probably a dumb question but why not just put a stiffer spring behind the diaphragm so it takes more pressure to open it?
@theeverydaylife1
@theeverydaylife1 8 жыл бұрын
It's not a dumb question, and it is a very common thing (at least in my car circles) it's just not where most people start as it is a little more difficult to either swap springs or track down and buy a heaver spring waste gate. I think this video is designed for the guy or gal who just wants an easy way to get a couple more PSI boost without too much work.
@sherpa8750
@sherpa8750 8 жыл бұрын
That's common. You can put larger springs in to allow more pressure therefore higher psi

Also that does not allow the adjustability an electronic boost controller offers, with a well setup electronic boost controller you can change your target boost pressure on the go, and thereby have multiple power levels. Bleed valves...well, I wish they would have gone a little into the issues with them, they allow short times of unwanted very high boost to occur, which your factory ECU and injectors (let's face it, someone who installs a bleed valve will likely run those) might not be up to. But yes, changing waste gate springs is a thing, and sometimes is even required for high boost applications, where the exhaust backpressure opens the wastegates a bit before your target boost is reached.

This is a well explained video. It gives me an idea how to eliminate the turbo boost control solenoid as a potential cause of a problem, whereby my engine suffers the occasional "hiccup' or 'misfire'. ( 2.0 Renault M9R diesel engine ). If the turbo boost control solenoid was faulty or sticking ( mine is making an odd vibration noise ), my assumption is that incorrect actuation of the waste gate valve might occur ( open when it should be closed and vice versa ). If removing the vacuum pipe at the waste gate, I interpret from your video that the gate valve will no longer open, and I am effectively running at maximum boost ( not ideal in terms of protecting the turbo from over-running and wearing out ), but I have eliminated the solenoid as a possible cause of the hiccup. Would you agree with that prognosis, or have any suggestions? There are no fault codes generated, and I know there could still be problems with one or more injectors. However, when I keep a constant speed at about 70 mph, the issue doesn't occur, but I soon as I accelerate or put the engine under load, the issue becomes apparent. Actually, sometimes the 'misfire' feels like a sudden loss of ignition and gives quite a sudden jolt. It's this behaviour and the noisy solenoid that made me think of investigating the boost and vacuum system. If the boost pressure sensor was detecting too high a pressure, because the valve was not opening at all, I would expect a fault code. However, if the gate was opening and closing erratically because of a badly functioning solenoid, perhaps this could result in a sudden loss of boost. I'm not sure what impact a suddenly opened/closed waste gate ( as opposed to a gradually opened or closed waste gate ) might have on engine performance. In some ways, this is why I prefer the simpler version of controlling boost, and not the electronic version.

I have a question, lets say my wastegate and actuator were not operating properly (staying stuck closed) causing an overboost situation under boost. By removing the restrictor pill ( in a 2 port boost solenoid) will make the car run to the minimum wastegate pressure? or will still be over boosting?

You'd need to add an external wastegate, that would work, although I am not sure why someone would do that. I'd be more worried about your engine, since without boost control, boost pressure will increase until it is "maxed out" and or your fuel delivery wont keep up, neither of those things is desirable in any way and will moost likely lead to certain death of your engine.

Depends which car. My turbo car runs primarily off of a mass air flow sensor. So it will put extra fuel for the air because it is metered. But I can only turn it up a few psi safely. Once the mass airflow meter determines there’s too much air for the available fuel it hits fuel cut/hard limp mode. But what a boost controller does is allow the boost to ramp up much faster even if I’m increasing it only 2 psi. So I was at 9psi now I’m at 11psi max but the boost hits much harder in 2nd gear and on. It will now spin the tires at 40 mph on hot dry pavement when boost come on hard in 2nd.

It's basically the same as an internal. If your intercooler piping has no nipple for boost pressure (as he was demonstrating), reference from the intake manifold. If you don't have a free vacuum line nipple, then you can either t-off from a current vacuum line (make sure it's pushing air, not sucking), or drill and tap the manifold and install your own nipple. I hope this helps.

Could that solenoid or vacuum valve make problems with turbo surging at half the throttle? I have a 2.4JTDm and sometimes it works just fine, but sometimes it surges from 3 up to 6 gear around 1800-2000rpm (turbo reference is around 2000 I think). Thanks...
