Its amazing how such a dog can become so important and meaningful to its owner. Others understand your grief. I had my my b.c. for 15 years and was fortunate enough to work and play with him almost 24/7. His demise and death still grieves me. I wish I could afford another but nowadays b.c. pups seem to go for $500-$1500 in my area, far more than I can spend.

@RonnieSandifer 5 жыл бұрын
@@waycam77 this is mostly true but if you research a little border collie have both kinds of ears lol. I've never seen a border collie that wasn't red and white or black and white but according to this vid they exist. To me the Australian Shepherd looks a little fatter but I guess it all depends on dogs diet

@waycam77 5 жыл бұрын
@@RonnieSandifer you are correct about the ears and it's true the Aussie Shep has a slightly larger frame. Also the Aussie has ghost/glazed eyes(in my opinion the greatest differentiating feature). You do find exceptions to the rule so a DNA test is probably the best indicator. In any case, they're both highly intelligent and loving dogs. My 11yr old BC is like a son to me.

The herding style is what truly sets them apart. BC uses a very unique lowered stance, with a focused stare that triggers the flight reaction in livestock. Working bloodline of BC is bred for the herding style, chase instinct and trainability, and not for fashion and looks. So the BC can have just about any coat type, coloration and erect or floppy ears. On the other hand, I have never seen a smooth coated Aussie, and most of them have their tail docked (shamefully).

I have both Aussies and BC's are boy are they different. Generally I find BC's far more switched on with a very high prey drive, they tend to be a little more sensitive towards new situations too. My Aussies are more laid-back with a better off switch, and are more outgoing toward strangers. Love these breeds though, very smart and athletic

Ive had both in my life time. YOU gave the best comparative description I have ever read! I would add, an aussie knows when to step up and take action on their own, then quickly go right back to listening to their human. If a border collie ever has to step up and make a decision, they think they no longer have to listen to their human. And need to go through tough training to get them back in line. Ive had 3 BC in my life time. All three went through this at some point in their life. Now, I wouldn't own anther bc. I will just stick with the aussie! Just got a pup around thanksgiving for my autistic grandson. It has done him a WORLD of good! Best thing we ever did for him! peace

@wordswritteninred7171
@wordswritteninred7171 4 жыл бұрын
@@queeny5613 I know you are talking to the op. But I vote for an aussie. They are much friendlier and more accepting of strangers. BC tend to have their own ideas about things. On a hike, it may decide it wants to do something along the way. You will have to direct it to continue the hike. Where as an aussie is just focused on their human. Of course there is always the exception of course. But as a rule, this is the differences I have seen. I did agility with one of my aussies and did great! They LOVE it! Same with the exploring on a hiking trail. They love climbing and jumping and crawling under things. I recommend getting one with a shorter than "akc standard" coat though. They are easy to find. And you will not miss the burs and hitchhikers! peace

Border collies are far better working dogs (herding, agility, disc, sports etc). They’re very high energy, extremely intelligent and need to have something to do. They’re also known to make good watchdogs and are ‘one-person dogs’, however a Border Collie certainly is not for everyone due to their extreme working drive. Australian shepherds are better family pets, more laid back and don’t feel the desire to work. I personally prefer the Border Collie as they typically choose one person as their owner and are particularly attached to that person. I also find them to be far better sport dogs in comparison to the Aussie due to their drive, speed and stamina. I also have a BC that works as my service dog and she’s incredibly intelligent and loves working.

I have always had some form of BC or a mix of. I currently have 3 rescues like that. One is pretty much pure BC. Another is BC/Queensland healer. Both are males. Our female is a BC/Aussie. All of them are wonderful dogs. Being rescues, they each have some small issues. Nothing bad, but challenging. I plan to buy the next gen from a reputable breeder some day. They all are super smart. Loyal, affectionate, and obedient. Excellent watch dogs. But not the type of breed for someone with limited time. I’m retired so we hike, walk, and play daily. I want to caution anyone thinking these breeds are just ‘cute and cuddly fur balls’. Read and research before you decide. There are too many of these 3 breeds that end up in shelters because the new owner expects them to just lay around. Each breed is active and requires your time and attention every day. If you live in an apartment.. forget it. You would be doing both the dog and yourself a big injustice. Anyway.. thanks for the nice video. The BC and Aussie are wonderful breeds. No doubt. But not for everyone. 🐶🐶🐶 👍🏼

I had an Aussie my friends had Aussies and I never seen one with a tail. I thought the English Shepherd was the one with a tail. Also, border collies are ridiculously smart and no other dog comes close. Aussies are stubborn but beautiful with multi-colored eyes (also brown) and they are very loyal. With that being said, border collies should really live only on a farm or somewhere with loads of acreage. They are escape artists and they need more exercise than just a long walk for the day.

Love the border collie, the drive is 100/100 and the herding instinct is something you gotta make worthy. These dogs definitely need exercise just to even keep them sane, unless it’s low-drive (that’s very unlikely) and doesn’t have to much energy. You need to do all your research on these two dogs before even thinking about getting one, these dogs need effort and time. Would definitely say the border collie has my heart forever. 🖤

I was career Navy. We couldn't have dogs on a ship, so I really never had a dog. I never cared much for dogs anyway. I got out of the Navy in 2003 and my daughter was an animal lover. I was divorced from her mother she lived in Iowa, me in California. I would get the kids for the entire summer. Every year my daughter wanted a new pet. Then she would go back to Iowa and I would be left carieing for her animals. We Had Parakeets, fish, hamsters, a Rabbit named Moody, and finally, a dog. My daughter had been asking for a dog and I explained she has a dog back in Iowa, and I was not going to care for a dog. She was determined that we get a dog. I was at work one summer and my current wife, and my son and daughter, Quinlynn call me at work, from a pet store, and they have fallen in love with a dog, please please, please can we spend $400.00 and buy him? Please daddy, He's so cute!! Hell, no! No dog! What kind of dog is he? She says, its an Australian Shepheard. I said what? Like a German Shepheard? They said no. It looks kind of like Lassie, it's a hearding dog. I said, no, no way no dog. I get home from work and they bought the dog anyway. I was pissed. This dog comes running into the kitchen, 8 weeks old, takes a look up at me then shits and vomits both at the same time on my kitchen floor. Oh, hell no! This dog goes back to thr pet store tomorrow!! Turns out I spend $400.00 dollars on an Australian Shepard that came from a puppy-mill in Arkansas. This little guy wasn't right and I was getting my money back. My daughter cried the next day as I called to let them know I was bringing thr dog back to the pet store. I explained what I knew and the lady told me to read my receipt.....at the bottom it said, ALL SALES ON DOGS ARE FINAL, NO REFUND!! I was like, shit. My daughter was like, oh yes dady, oh darn it. We have to keep him. Long story short, my daughter goes back to Iowa, this puppy needs to be locked up in a cage when I'm at work or he chews everything. I was going to turn it into the pound and a friend said. Get another one. I was like, that is the dumbest shit I have ever heard. Your joking right? He wasn't and I did. And I can officially say, my first two dogs were Australian Shepherds. Sunny was from the puppy mill and K.O. , cuz he was a knock-out, came from a breeder in California. They were both the same age but Sunny was a week older. Up until then, I had never had a dog. I never loved two animals more than I loved those two dogs, and I always will.

Are dogs sold in pet stores in the United States?

@@magdalenaxvivankirgizie2530 no, there's a lot of breeders and shelter who also sell dogs. It's better to find a qaulity breeder or find a pup in a shelter. As their is many scams when it comes to finding a forever friend.

@@magdalenaxvivankirgizie2530 Yes, dogs are sold at pet stores in the US. Not sure why the other person said no. Many of the chain store pet stores work with the local "humane society" or other "dog shelter", allowing them a space in the store to find homes for dogs and cats. BUT, "mom and pop" pet stores have dogs and cats for sale. MOST come from puppy mills. We also have "craigslist" here in the us. On craigslist, many years back, people started asking for "rehoming" fees. just to help (hopefully) prevent the pup going for nefarious reasons. It use to be that you could get a dog for free, or for $20-$50. Now, any ol mutt, any ol breed, any age, goes for $200+!!!!! This is the worse thing that could have happened for dogs in general! Use to be, only registered, pure breed dogs, carried such a price tag. Now, people of low moral value, can grab any dog from anywhere, or breed any two dogs, and make a small fortune. And those who simply wanted a pet, can't get one, unless they want to invest a big portion of their check. This is not how its supposed to work. It should be, that you wouldn't give $20 for a dog, but then not take a million for it after its part of the family!!!! The road to hell truly is paved with good intentions! Peace

Patrick Farrell I loved your story! Thanks for sharing! I am so happy to find out you have a well informed friend! And happy you are wise enough to take good advice! YOur children will certainly benefit from that! My adult son is a cat person. He does not care for dogs. He LOVES all animals, but does not want any dogs. Well, I am living with my son to help raise my autistic grandson. I KNOW every child needs a dog!!! Especially a special needs child. The day before Thanksgiving we got an aussie pup. I LOVE the breed! TO me, no other breed even comes close! Well, my son agreed to it, because he knows that it will help his son. But really didn't want a dog! Well, the pup has other ideas! He LOVES my son! lol He follows my son everywhere! wont leave him alone! Wags his rump so hard he even knocks himself down! lol Now, my son cant imagine what it was like before him! and its only been a month! lol They are wonderful animals! They love UNCONDITIONALLY! as the other posted stated, they are "mans best friend" for a reason! May you and yours have many blessed years! (and thank you for your service! That is a huge sacrifice for all involved! )

I defiantly think the guarding or protective nature of the Australian Shepard is stronger than the border collie, which in notable that both breeds and maybe more the aussie will bond with a few people very closely

I have 2 Borders and I only brush them during their shed and bathe them once or twice a year, if not necessary earlier due to mud or other. I also feel like the Border Collie is more focused on their handler and cooperation and not what's going on around them, whereas the Aussie it seems have a shorter attention span. Of course, everyone is an individual but just overall :)

Hey, I have a border collie and I know several people, who have them, too. There's a lot of information you can find online, but I'm going to give you a few tips I haven't seen too much when researching BC before getting one. I would say you have to be very careful when training a border collie. They tend to be very sensitive, so if you don't choose positive reinforcement training only, be very careful. They are incredibly loving dogs and they hate to be alone. They live to please their master, but they do require a lot of time. Mine is always asking for attention, even after a big hike and a play of fetch, she will still be full of energy.

Lots of brain games and training. Do not overexercise them or do too much of the same thing (leads to hyperactivity and obsessiveness). They will just keep going and going and the more you exercise them the more athletic they become. Unless you want to be extremely active daily don't make the mistake of running them to exhaustion every day. Mental stimulation tires them out much quicker than physical stimulation (that goes for all dogs). A slow walk where you allow them to sniff everything they want tires them out (mentally) far more than a brisk walk where you don't stop to allow them to sniff. They don't usually come with a built in off switch, you will have to teach them how to settle down when indoors so you can get some peace and quiet (otherwise prepare to have a soggy tennis ball dropped in your lap repeatedly while you try to watch TV or eat dinner). Enjoy, they are the best dogs :)

No one with half a brain thinks the Border collie contributed significantly to the development of the Australian shepherd. The Australian shepherd shares many more traits in common with the English shepherd, Pyrenean shepherd, and the Farm Collie.

My wife and I have one of each. If you regularly exercise them, they can be great in the house. We live on 40 acres, so exercise means a run around the perimeter, or two, chasing the Gator, however the Aussie at 10 months can outrun the gator, which goes 23 mph. At 9 years old the Border Collie will run with it for half a lap and then will gladly ride with, and watch the Aussie fly. The Aussie will also jump our 4 foot yard fence without a second thought, something the Border Collie has never done. they are both great, both sweet and semi respectful of your stuff unless ignored. Overall, they are both great.

My Australian Shepherd is so stubborn. So stubborn. Everything has to be HIS idea. He makes sure there is just the right amount of time after a command for you to wonder...only a moment or two mind you but...a "I'll think that one over, one, two...OKAY!" Huge personality and a total clown. He LOVES exercise games, inside games, and he loves to spread out legs open paws up to sleep too.

I have 3 BC. 2 female littermates 10 yrs old 1 Male 1 year old. Make sure Merry has a "job" so she doesn't get bored. That's when they do things they shouldn't. My puppy has 3 old shoes he carries around and loves clear disposable cups to crinkle. He's never chewed any of my shoes, just the 3 old ones my husband left in the yard for mowing the lawn. Make sure to socialize like crazy!!! You can teach them to sit, shake hands, lie down the first day. Puppy classes at Petco were a lot of fun for our 2 females when they were pups. They still visit and look for the trainer who has moved on. Zak George has a channel and has been training his BC Inertia for last year and each video is very helpful. Good luck!
