In this video I work on my iBook G3 "Clamshell". This is the Indigo model with FireWire. It has a 366 MHz and 320 MB RAM (64 MB on-board and 256 MB module). The original battery has been refurbished with new cells and lasts a full 4-5 hours comfortably.
The laptop itself is in very good condition, although it has an odd power issue. It will only power on with power adapter disconnected and a combination of Option + Ctrl + Shift + Power. This particular combination of keys resets the PMU or Power Management Unit and needs to be performed with every start. After the laptop powers up, the power adapter can be connected and the laptop will start charging normally. I owned the laptop for several months before I discovered this trick to get it to power on, after which I was able to reinstall the OS and verify all other functions.
These iBooks were notorious for being difficult to tear down, but it turned out to be fairly straightforward as long as the numerous screws of various sizes are carefully tracked. After getting access to inspect the logic board, I discovered a leaking capacitor. Research suggested the leaking capacitor is a 0.33F "supercapacitor" responsible for PMU settings.
With no other indications of damage, I've done ahead and ordered a replacement capacitor online and have my fingers crossed that this will resolve the power issues. After having fully disassembled the unit and needing to order parts anyway, I also decided I would install an SSD.
Enjoy Part 1 and stay tuned for Part 2 next week after I install the replacement supercapacitor and upgrade the hard drive to an SSD.

I have a blue one I bought at a garage sale a while back but it has three big problems: it doesn't work without being plugged in, the screen has some funky looking bulge damage on it, and it has some elementary school software on it that prevents me from doing much on it since I'm stuck on student mode (teacher mode requires a password I don't know) and important features can't be accessed through it. That student mode is why I haven't done anything to fix mine. Maybe one day I'll find the right factory reset discs on ebay.

I've got one of those and it doesn't turn on - I checked the super capacitor but I don't see any leakages there. Any ideas?
@jamesdavies686
@jamesdavies686 3 жыл бұрын
Most component testers and even expensive multimeters won't read a supercap. They usually top out around 10,000uf
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 3 жыл бұрын
Good callout. Just looked into my unit and apparently its rated up to 0.1F i.e. 100,000uF. Not sure if that's exaggerated but nonetheless still won't read a 0.33F cap. Too bad won't be able to verify the reading on the replacement cap when it comes in. Thanks for sharing!

I picked up one of these a few years ago at a Garage sale cheap. It’s nearly flawless condition and works great. Only issue is it will not work without being plugged in. I tried replacing the battery but no go.
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, especially since you tried a new battery. The symptoms are slightly different from my unit here, but I'm a little suspicious of the supercapacitor or potential trace damage due to leakage from the supercapacitor. The more retro tech I work on the more I realize they have common failures. There's always the oddball unit but all things equal, theres a short list of things that fail on each platform and the issue ends up being more common than I had previously thought. Theres always the possibility the replacement battery was no good but you might have to tear the unit down and examine the power circuitry area near the DC jack to confirm what's going on.

i have to ask, the mess under the board, could it not be tin creep, i have seen that on boards before, its common on high voltage normaly, i was supprised that tin with out lead will grow and tends to grow to something it shouldnt.

Regarding the capacitor, I don't believe it's a coincidence. Many caps were victims of capacitor plague during that time period.
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 3 жыл бұрын
I think so too and have read posts from folks discussing the OG Xbox, just never seen anything about these iBooks. I thought it was interesting that out of all the possible faults it was a leaky super capacitor.

@BorderlineOCD

I have no interest in doing that bud. I own a lot of retro tech and for computers like this I actually try to get them "period accurate". In other words, I'm more excited to replicate the experience of someone owning this in 2000 than I am of getting more functionality out of it with a Linux distro.

What does the Xbox clock capacitor? Keep the time and date or something about the cpu power vrm?
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 3 жыл бұрын
Xboxes are plagued with issues arising from a particular capacitor that leaks on v1.0 to v1.5 motherboards known as the "clock capacitor". It's a 1F supercapacitor that keeps the system time for a few hours after the system loses power. Often faulty Xboxes have power issues due to the leakage and corrosion this supercapacitor causes.

Yeah unless you have the kind of volume to make shipping worthwhile, there’s always going to be that upfront costs even for a $.10 component. I have ventured in my neighborhood and found a local electronics supply store, but I only find what I need about 50% of the time.
