A boreal owl in northern Minnesota, Sax-Zim Bog, hunting for rodents, is continually harassed by a red squirrel, gray jays and woodpeckers. One brazen female hairy woodpecker climbed up the tree to the owl and poked its belly with her beak before flying off.
In the beginning, the owl was in the thick forest and only bits and pieces could be seen as a red squirrel ran all around. Thinking it could be my only view of the owl, I did my best to capture, despite the hard view. Finally, towards dark, the owl flew out of the forest, into full view. Moments later it was too dark. Two days later, the owl came out and was actively hunting while other critters were harassing it quite often.
This owl can hypnotize you, watch its eyes and head movements, up close and personal. Video clips were taken over many hours, some are sped up, some slowed down, while others are normal speed.
