Ex-Genesis UK employee here. The G80 is my favourite model in the entire lineup. The small gripes you mentioned with the interior have been addressed. The recently revealed facelifted version includes a completely redesigned interior.

I think all Genesis products are tasteful and gorgeous.

As a European I love how these look lol. By far the best looking car in it's class.

Man, I think the latest Genesis products look great. And I say this as someone with 3 Jaguars, so I feel like I'm in tune with British styling taste. This design stands in tasteful elegant contrast to e.g. BMW's latest disasters.

Maybe if Topgear still did proper car reviews like this they might still exist.

I am a European living in the US. I have been driving a G70 RWD 3.3t for 5 years, this car is seriously understated, it is so sharp and the interior is gorgeous. I cross shopped it against a BMW M 340i and a MB C43, the G70 was the most exciting car and it was $17k less than the 2 Germans

I had one of these as a rental car for a few days in Canada recently. I did about 1000 km in it and it was a very nice, well-appointed, comfortable car.

Out here in the US Genesis are huge, they are everywhere for good reason. The GV80 is a big seller and a beautiful vehicle. Only issue is the lack of dedicated Genesis dealerships, but they are building them quickly.

That is a contextually brilliant price. My Msport pro 330e touring cost 60k and doesn’t have anywhere near this many toys

I own a G80 and I love the thing. It's powerful, great interior, comfortable and a fantastic sound system. A great freeway weapon and very reasonably priced.

I think describing if the sunroof is of any use to the driver or too far behind, as you did in this video is very useful. I am submitting a humble request for doing it whenever applicable.

Affer twenty years of owning various Jaguar's and seven yeays owning a Maserati Ghibli Diesel, 18 months ago i switched to a Genesis Electrified G80, and i have to say its the best car I've owned! My car at around 80k fully loaded is some 10k less than the equivalent Mercedes EQE. I think your a bit wrong about the option packages. The Executive pack gives you the soft close doors, rear screens, rear seat controls and window blinds. Finally the EV has the option of a Solar roof which does add a few miles of range. I get close to 300 miles on a full charge in mild weather. However, from my ownership experience, beyond the way it drives, is the amount of positive attention it gets wherever i go. Most think its some kind of Bentley, particularly helped by my cars unusual shade of colour - Matira Blue, although it looks green, and its white interior with an original forged wood trim! Next time see if you can try the EV version, that just adds to the refinement making it almost Rolls Royce esq, but with insane performance.... Interesting how you describe the kind of buyer of this car given my previous car ownership!

But I admit, as an American who drives on the correct side of the road and enjoys food with wonderful flavors as opposed to food that's subtle or bland, I could be wrong on it's exterior styling!. So nice to see a new car with a proper dashboard. Not the lazy and dangerous slab of touchscreen in most. At last a manufacturer actually putting some effort into designing the interior!

I had the first release Genesis G80 model in Australia and absolutely loved it. It was a 2014 build and had everything that you could want and half that you wouldn't use once set up. It had the 3.3litre motor and wasn't that gratin fuel economy around the suburbs but on a long trip got 8.6litres per 100 klms. We are not getting the 2.5 here in Australia for some reason but are soldiering on with the 2.0 litre. I am glad that you made comment about the vehicle not being the quickest but it was the drive and that is exactly how I felt about mine (although it could get up and go) but I enjoyed the pleasure of the driving it; not racing it. Potential customers in England should give it a really close look.

Quite premium quality at lower prices compared to the BMW.

Had one of these as a rental last week out of BOS. Overall it was very nice. Reminded me a bit of what an older 530 felt like. Didn’t appreciate the only USB connection was USB-A since I no longer have a charger with that connector. Every other rental I’ve gotten lately has had at least one USB-C port.

This is the first modern car that I've look at and actually thought "I'd buy that" and I'm saying that as a SAAB owner.

Hey, I'll have you know that I'm reasonably familiar with Genesis. I love prog rock! Yes, sometimes the songs can feel a bit self-indulging with the hour-long keyboard solos, but the music is still great to listen to.

I still miss my SAAB. But I have driven a few of the Genesis range and they are very good cars. The G80 with the V6 is the one to get. I am considering one instead of the Lexus if I cannot convince my partner to get the LC500. Another good video Jay.

It might just be me but I think it looks incredible! Interior as well lovely especially with that shade of wood. Certainly better looking than most of what BMW are pumping out nowadays

Minor point but I prefer the static camera shots you use in your usual videos rather than the slow zoom-in used sporadically in this video. The solidity and nice sharp cuts feel a bit like a channel signature now.

I love your channel! I really like the design for some reason. It might date fast but for the time being I think it’s a good looking alternative to the German rivals. I think the perfect motorway car would be this car chosen with the 2.2 diesel engine

I had a G80 EV as a rental last year and honestly…it was good. The interior was fantastic; great controls and easy to use. It didn’t feel “like an EV”. It felt big, but I’m used to smaller cars. I came away thinking I could really drive one every day. Very impressed.

I agree with you on it not attracting BMW & Mercedes buyers. At least until (if ever) the UK gets the proper engines. I have a G70 3.3T and it's very quick. BMW M340i quickish which puts it into another category. Glad you enjoyed it though. Genesis is a great brand.

Here in the States, it is unfortunate that these cars will never truly achieve long term critical acclaim mostly because of the dealer network. If you're lucky the Genesis dealer will be courteous, but generally it's a glorified Hyundai dealer. Long term reliability may also be suspect as Kia/Hyundai engines seem to be not doing so well early on in their rather long warranty period. They seem to be more mechanically sound overall, though these cars have been out for not that long so it remains to be seen. Excellent cars to start with, but are likely to fall apart soon by way of dealer, parts and maintenance issues.

I love Genesis cars. To me, they seem to have got the styling and design just right. I don't even like wood in car interiors, but I can forgive this. Only issue for me with the G80 is that engine. As another poster mentioned, if the used the Stinger V6 this car would be perfect. Great review Jay, many thanks.

That is a car I seriously appreciate existing. A shame about the engine option but if I ever did get a brand new Exec it'd be a Genesis.

I had this on test back in October. Loved it! A gimmick, however, I really liked the 'active sound design' that pumped fake engine sounds into the cabin. I agree too, crap on fuel. Even Sam at Genesis agreed that they really do drink fuel. My X350 V6 Petrol gets better MPG.

I was kinda hoping that in 5 years time there could be some bargains to be had on the second hand market, but south of 30mpg is a bit of a sore spot on a modern car.

I've had my eyes on Genesis and I want one so bad. I need an upgrade from my Volvo. Shame everything is so expensive I don't think I'll ever afford one. I hope I'll not be late to the party and see Genesis leave before I've saved enough.

I have it in 4wd option and I love this car. Had before this a Maserati ghibli q4 and I prefore now Genesis.

I’ve driven 2 G80s and a gv70. Both are outstanding cars, drive better and more comfortable than I ever thought they would be.

Just got back from a trip to the US West Coast (I'm from the UK) & had the pleasure of driving the G80 for a couple of weeks as a hire car whilst there... You've hit the nail on the head with your feedback. It's certainly a quirky looking thing, the exterior styling grew on me - profile especially, which reminds me of the Jaguar XJ (X351). I can count on one hand how many others I came across on the road so it is relatively rare - I guess as you say, this may be because it's a relatively unkonwn quantity compared to say a 5 series. I actually had a chap ask me at a fuel pump about my thoughts on it, which, just as you said are: 1) Fuel economy is very poor - On a run from LA to Vegas (around 300 miles) , we got roughly 40mpg, not too bad with US fuel prices but I wouldn't want to live with that back home. I drive a total of around 1,000 miles which included around 10% of stop/start traffic in LA and averaged 34mpg (UK) 2) Interior ergonomics on the whole are good but have a few gripes - the two rotary controls on the console being one - I lost count of the number of times I reached for the Gear Selector only to grab the iDrive instead! The ignition button on the IP is completely out of line of sight behind the steering wheel, so you have to "feel" for it...& strange one but the Driver's Airbag cover has an odd shape which causes you to activate the horn if you rest your thumbs in the "wrong" place below the wheel switchpack. 3) For me, there just isn't any percieved prestige attached to the brand, which shouldn't really matter but will be a real consideration at this price point 4) The tech is brilliant, radar cruise especially is implemented very well - far far better than in VAG products which I find are overly cautious and intrusive

Regarding fuel consumption for a 2.5t petrol engine at nearly 2000kg is completely normal. I would say, it’s actually a tad on the economical side. Any modern Euro6 4pot 2.0 t petrol engine will return very similar figures

I own the previous generation G80 and it's quite similar. The NA V6 is fantastically responsive and sounds great, although it gets terrible fuel economy when paired with AWD. The ride is a bit better thanks to the 18" wheels on most models. It's fantastic for cruising thanks to the sound system and comfortable cooled seats, while the steering and suspension are good enough to have fun in the twisties. You can also fully defeat the traction control, which has gotten me close to trouble a few times 😅. I've had a few interior parts fail, notably the air bladders in the driver's seat, but the car is tuned so well and such a great value that my next car might still be a GV60.

As a long time BMW driver I´m going to test it, after your video. As you said I wasn´t aware that this isn´t chinese but the same group as KIA :) And al lot of BMW owners might have experienced that KIA instead of BMW is reliable and value for money! Thanks for the insight!

Genesis has become an excellent brand - with its own personality. My wife is now on her second Genesis Coupe (sadly no longer in production) and she only traded in the first one, as she wanted a one with less accumulated milage, and a different color. They are well built - and the only gripe one could really have is infotainment becoming dated (much like any other car as they age.) My 2010 S63 AMG suffers the same gripe in my book, lol.

I imagine the tyres really helped when pushing on and on :)

A guy in our building swesrs by Genesis, he's had a few of them but I've never seen another one. Great looking cars and surprisingly luxury feeling

I just wish they were a bit more adventurous with the engine options over here in the UK. A G70 shooting brake with the 3.3L V6 of the Kia Stinger (which the G70 saloon gets an option of in the states) would have been incredible. Seems like they're playing far too safely stereotypical. Americans "don't like estates" so they don't get the shooting brake, and Europeans "don't want a big engine" so we only get the 4 pots. Funnily enough my 3.3 Stinger gets better fuel economy figures than that on average!

I love genesis. their design, interior and whatnot are beautiful. But we will have to see how they hold up in longevity.

I really like the exterior. I think the designer has been very clever in taking styling details off cars from the higher end luxury bracket. It affords the car an overall air of punching way above it's price bracket.

I went to visit the 'showroom/shop' at Battersea Power station last Sunday. I had been intrigued by the round around car G70 sporting brake that had been added to Shmee's garage in a recent video. Unfortunately they didn't have the car in the 'shop' and they also had another car that you could no longer buy. The staff, while very polite, had no knowledge of the cars, only suggesting that I visit the website to find out more and if interested book a test drive from the website. If Genesis are serious in increasing market share and positioning the brand, they will have to try a lot harder. I've had 7 Audi's since 2010 but feel they have lost the soul of what Audi used to be. Looking at alternatives, unfortunately Genesis will only be a small 'left field' option unless they take their presence in the market seriously. They generally appeared to be a high quality product, very well detailed and a car I would really want to understand more, but all the effort apparently needs to come from the customer rather than the company.

I like the Genesis brand and in particular the G80 as it's that increasingly rare thing - a new saloon on the market. I hope the brand succeeds in the UK, they deserve to for sure but it's a tough gig trying to launch a new brand, as many have discovered. Personally, I like the styling inside and out (with the exception of the steering wheel) and the mix of tech and physical controls is, as you say, just right. Great car, I like it a lot.

I would be interested to know what are James' favourite cars. I'm guessing Kia Stinger, F12, and maybe a Lotus Elise.

Beautiful car with an impressive feature list! I see Genesis as the 21st Century Lexus! I'm sure that within a few years they will be held in the same regard as any other established luxury automotive brand.

I really like the Genesis brand, and the G80 in particular. If I was in the market for a car like this, it would be at the top of my list for serious consideration. The only slight hesitation, is the question mark over depreciation. But that aside, it's a really nice car. I love the looks, I love the interior, and I love that it's different. I hope with all my heart that Genesis succeeds, because it certainly deserves to.

I had the same problem with my phone, the USB-C port failed meaning I could only charge wirelessly and couldn't take advantage of Android Auto. I bought the AAWireless dongle and now have android auto in wireless form. Transferable between cars and works really well.

It's a nice car. Certainly worth considering.

I really love the steering wheel to be honest. It just looks so elegant and classy, especially compared to the very generic looking sporty steering wheel in some other models.

I have a Jaguar e pace and with the PCP finishing in a few months, am looking at the competition. Looked at Lexus, another e pace and others but this has now stopped as I tried out a Genesis GV70. I test drove one for over two hours and it is a car which has the value of a top of the range Merc or BMW but costs only £45k which is an absolute bargain. Pure luxury and with the driver appeal of a £70k German car so I’ve now ordered one.

Gensis is a weird thing in the UK. I personally quite like them but they're so absent here ive never seen one on the road. I did some research on it and it turns out they have literally no dealers. Only gallery things like tesla and there's only a few in some major cities. However from the sounds of it those have all been axed in the uk and it seems like genesis will be sold in Hyundai and kia dealers now.

I was in recently getting my Maserati Ghibli serviced in Poole, and they have a Genesis dealership there, so of course I had a little look as it's not something you see too often. I gotta say I loved them, yes they look a bit funky, but seemed very quite well put together. I may just need to test drive one of these some day! I was shocked to see the prices too, used these are an absolute bargain if you can find one.

I had the same fuel issues with my 2.0 stinger! On a good run I could get it up to 30 at max! But regular driving I was getting 22-24mpg. I was getting more mileage out my v6 type 😂. I think the Kia/Hyundai 4 pots are a bit rough round the edges. If you can live with the mileage though these flagship level cars are EXCELLENT

Genesis look like nice cars definitely, just a shame they got rid of the Genesis Coupe before launching Genesis as a separate brand cause that's still to me their most interesting car. Even if it technically was a Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Okay it is buried in a screen menu but if you didn't like the brakes there is a sport setting that can be selected, fun when you are pressing on but too sharp for town and trafic. Oh and here in Australia even my SUV GV70 comes with Michelin Pilot sport 4s as we dont need all season tyres.

Interesting car with good specs, just like 5 series and E class used to be in the past, well built, pleasing to drive, equipped and priced smartly. Genesis is becoming a popular brand in the UAE where petrol prices are still cheaper than in the west.

Not having wireless Apple CarPlay is a bit of a first world problem, but you would expect it in that spec. I have it in my Qashqai. It is a nice saloon though.

Good solid offering and alternative to the German offerings. Even built pretty well from the few I’ve had my hands on. Not sure I’d have one myself however

2018 G80 owner just turned 100k still nearly flawless car, I replaced my 2006 Merc E350 and its amazing how close the ride is but the G80 is light years ahead and similar merc would have cost me a lot more

What I notice about the Genesis, even though you did not mention it and did not use it, is the cruise control: on the wheel where it should be.; Porsche (and Toyota) relegates cruise control to a stick behind the wheel, not placing it on the wheel under your right hand thumb - where it should be! I have a question I believe is worthy: "Why would an automobile - as in "auto" "mobile" - manufacturer give "shelf-space priority" to audio and telephone, and not to cruise control?"
