i must have been at the second set. i remember spherical midi controllers and lightening noises from Eye. i came out of that gig unable to speak for about 45 minutes. completely dumbfounded and blown away. i remember describing the second set hours later as 60s Star Trek music, backwards, on mushrooms. amazing stuff

Yeah, at first I felt this was just an improv group performing randomly according to the director. When when they hit that 5-drum "solo" at 13:20... I was hooked. I had not heard of this group before and had not planned to watch the entire video, but I couldn't tear myself away from it. Parts I liked, parts not so much, but that 5-drum lead is so unusual that I had to watch the entire thing. Now I'm going to have to Wiki the group and learn more about their style of music.

There are going to be those who love this sound, some who are indifferent, some who find it interesting, some who think it pretentious, and some who hate it. Considering this has had less than 25k views and 532 likes in a period of 5 1/2 years, it's obvious this isn't for everyone, nor all that popular. Of course, the number of views on KZfaq is no indicator of talent or skill... where a cat falling off a TV can have more views than an accomplished opera singer. At first I thought this was random improvisation under the guidance of a conductor... until they hit that addictive tribal drum run at 13:20, accompanied by a nice vocal from Eye. I had not been planning on watching this whole video, but just like a person watching good actors in a questionable movie, I had to stay around and see what came next. I can say with near certainty that if it weren't for the drummers, this would be a flop. (I bet lead drummer Yoshimi had the back of her dress sewn shut before the next show. ) While lead singer / conductor Eye has a moderately interesting voice and sometimes credible and "adventurous" vocals, he strikes me more of a show-off performer rather than a musician (indeed, during the short sequence of the second show at the end, I wondered whether he was drunk or had smoked something, the way he was stumbling about). The main show was certainly carried by lead drummer Yoshimi and her drum circle, who did a fine job and were the primary reason I stuck around. I found it somewhat regrettable that none of the other musicians were featured at all. In truth, I couldn't really tell what part they were playing in all the "Japanoise" (yes, a somewhat official term for this style o f music). I have zero history or knowledge of this type of music, so I have nothing to compare it to. Brilliant? No. It's like watching great dancers perform in the middle of a train wreck. Slamming multiple guitar necks with a stick over and over seemed pretentious and eventually obnoxious. Different? Yes. Captivating? For some, perhaps. It kept me glued to the set, wanting to see what they might come up with next. But would I watch the band again? No... and for me that's the telling point, the rule of thumb that helps me determine whether a style of music (or a movie) suits my personal taste or not. I am not a fan of metal, but I've watched about every BAND MAID video on KZfaq; I can appreciate quality performance even if it's not my cuppa tea. But I'll not be watching another video of this group. Nevertheless, creds to the drummers. They were awesome. And it could be the other musicians were awesome as well, but who can tell when they're all hidden in the background both physically and musically. So mixed feelings on this. It was worth it to watch the drummers. Personally I would have liked to have heard a little more musical skill along with what in the end is basically a complex tribal drumming performance with a bit of nonsense thrown in. And while the vocals between Eye and Yoshimi are often interesting, Yoshimi would seem the real talent here (she might be hard to replace, while just about anyone can bang guitar necks with a stick). Overall an interesting watch. Once.
