I find the Borg as a enemy force very interesting... that over time as they build on it, they become worse and worse. The more they use the Borg, the less scary, less threatening, more incompetent they become. How could they take such a scary, powerful and threatening force and neutered them to oblivion?

Overuse does that. I really wish Voyager hadnt spent something like half their entire episodes on the Borg. That really killed it even in the 90s

The Borg were only genuinely threatening for 3 episodes of TNG .... Q Who, and Best of Both Worlds ... everything after that gradually reduced that initial terror. All Sc-Fi shows have one enemy that is seriously overused simply because viewers love to see them ... with Daleks being the ultimate example. I really liked seeing them in Picard season 3 because they HAD to be a part of Picards final adventure. He had to face the lingering demons left by Wolf 359, and saving his son from the same fate that almost killed him was coming full circle.

@@martynstembridge7714 I absolutely agree about being overused. At this point, I find the Sheliak far more imposing than the Borg and the Sheliak was defeated by Picard with contract law. Honestly, they have had Picard resolve his scars from his encounter from the Borg multiple times. I don't see why they HAD to use the Borg again in Picard's final adventure. Picard has dealt with plenty of other life changing events that are loose threads. His many encounters with the Romulans. His connection with Klingon politics and the Klingon civil war - his status as arbiter of succession. His many treaties he has been involved in. His many encounters with the Cardassians. Powerful entities like the Q continuum, the Cytherians, Armis, or Negilum. There are so so so many things they could have done - or just something totally new and unique - rather than the Borg for the fifth time.
@martynstembridge7714

@@zignamuclickclickk Thing is ... none of the events you listed there damaged Picard mentally as much as becoming Locutus. And even though he dealt with the Borg again in First Contact, that always just felt like a look at how damaged he still was. I don't think it resolved his issues. Matalas clearly wanted this season to leave Picard a happy and peaceful man ... with any lingering mental anguish lifted (Ro, not having a family and The Borg) ... If seasons 1 and 2 hadn't used the Borg in horrible and meaningless ways then this appearance wouldn't have been so 'meh' ... plus Voyager overused the Borg to breaking point. I was ok with it because in the end it was really just a brief showdown with a fucked up Queen, and the excellent conversation with his son inside the collective. It was more meaningful than just another Borg cude arrives to blow up ships scenario ... But I understand your point of view.

I'll speak to the Picard and kids point. I wasn't a Dad till I was 41, but occasionally had very lucid dreams of being one - typically a daughter - and welcomed the idea. BUT, when you're actually a father it's a very real and deeper relationship than any imagery I may have had. So, I buy the realization that Picard has as he bonds with Jack as his father.

Q is back! Though I heard the scene was a little different originally... Jack: Now to face no consequences and enjoy myself in Starfleet. Q: Hello Jack. It's me, Q. Jack: Q!? My dad told me all about you. Aren't you dead? How are you alive again? Q: Your mere mortal brain cannot fathom the power of the Q... or the retcon! Jack: I can't believe it, back from the dead! Q: Come on Jack, you are in Star Trek. Death is meaningless. Picard's has died, Data has died TWICE, the borg queen has died at least twice too. You really think that I wouldn't be back? Jack: Ok, when you put it that way, that makes sense. So why are you here? Q: Well, it's time to finish putting humanity on trial. Jack: I thought you told my dad that he was off the hook for that. Q: Yes. Since Picard is now just a robot, I don't really care about him anymore. But humanity still must be judged. Jack: Well, what do you think? Q: Let's see... Humanity, after thousands of years of war and strife finally learned how to work together, solve many of it's problems; got rid of hunger, poverty, war, disease. Learned to embrace science, explored the galaxy all under the values of curiosity, kindness and morality. Expanded their minds and reached for the starts to try to become one with the universe. In fact, Picard learned to expand his mind beyond and show the potential of humanity. Most impressive. Jack: Awesome. Q: Yes - truly incredible for a race to reach such great heights in such a short time. I would normally gift such a race with unimaginable bliss and rewards but... Jack: ...but... Q: Then, in less than 25 years the Federation has turn into a pit of scum and villainy, murder and war is commonplace, torture is used, everyone is selfish and self serving, people have become drug addicts, Starfleet is filled with bigots and things like genocide are considered at a drop of a hat. I have never seen the fall of a race and watch it become a wreck of evil in such a short time. On top of that, you Jack are a scumbag, a terrible human being who is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people and almost destroyed humanity using the borg. Just absolutely stupid. Jack: That's kinda harsh. Q: I saw one of you eat car batteries. Jack: So... work in progress? Q: What do you think? Jack: Well like you said, it's Star Trek so death doesn't really matter. So who cares, do your worse. Q: Humans are so annoying. I think I'm going to go back to being dead.

We get the word "robot" from an old play, R.U.R., Rossum's Universal Robots. In that play, we invent artificial humans, but then humans lose the ability to have babies. Then the formula for creating the robots gets destroyed At the end of the play, two robots fall in love and the human believes that that means that the two robots will be able to have babies and be the Adam and Eve of a new race.

1. Where did Jacks Borg outfit come from? 2. After the Enterprise blew up the beacon and swooped in to beam Picard and everyone out, why weren't they sucked out the hole in the roof you could see the enterprise through??
@greybeard5123

2. They were still pretty deep in the cube. The hole in the roof just went up to the next levels, not to open space. They were flying faster than the explosion was propagating (unlikely, but Star Wars did it too), so the air containment is still intact in that part of the ship.

So I still consider Star Trek Online as "canon" to it's own timeline where Data's memories took to B4 and thus he lived on normally rather then the stuff that happens to him in STP, so I was brainstorming an idea to make sense of the condition of the Borg in Picard where they seem to be dying out, or at least as much as the Queen can tell, meybe she was cut off from the wider COllective. But for STO one idea I had was that the Borg realize this Queen was a major weakness, too flawed. THus they cut off from her before it's too late, and eventually she just dies out, the Borg do whatever they need to then somehow purge the nanovirus, and make a new more consistant Queen, who's more Borg like, and they basically changed tactics seeing how resiliant the Federation is, they resort to swelling their ranks with essentially growing clones with needed cybernetics, with them developing a nano virus that can let them infect planets over time. And assimilation is now simply used for collecting knowledge and info, and if the new drone doesn't have any useful info, well assimilated people make great for quickly bolstering a local force's numbers with how quick it is now. WIth nanotech quickly building basic needed components rather then simply capturing someone and taking the time to replace their body parts. Cause let's face it, assimilation is great for getting info and boslering local numbers of Borg, but as the sole method of reproduction it makes no sense, and we know the Borg clearly don't have reproductive organs for sex. So yah I think the Borg just repurpose axisting ships or people, or break captured ships or minerals from planets down into components to fuel somehow creating offspring liek cloning. Let's face it, if you don't need to fuck, you don't need to worry about genetic getting messed up.

@kewlztertc5386
@kewlztertc5386 Жыл бұрын
No you missed the point, listen to that conversation with the queen more carefully. She tells Picard that "You've rewritten our machine code into genetic code". This means even the fetuses inside the wombs will be Borg from the moment of cinceotuon. In the past a child birthed by a Borg drone was born as it's parent's pre-assimilated native species. The infant would then be assimilated immediately after birth. Then placed in a matriation chamber. Now the Borg will come straight out the oven ready to go, no assimilation necessary. This answers your second question. They don't need to assimilate, they can just insert their genetic code (infect) a planet and the people of the planet will give birth to drones. No need for any effort by the Borg. Just let the population of a planet birth your army for you.
@nsheridan6978
@nsheridan6978 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Jack wasn't assimilated, Picard who was had his Borg DNA, unknowingly, passed onto his son Jack when he was conceived, though Jack's mother was fully human. So, after embedding Borg DNA via transporters on all ships in young humans & other species, organic Borgs could be reproduced biologically through procreation - that's propagation. The annihilation part BQ spoke of, most likely, refers to eventually erasing all species who do not possess Borg DNA. Actually, it also makes sense that Borg DNA via transporters affect the younger generation, more likelihood of being able to procreate.
@nsheridan6978
@nsheridan6978 Жыл бұрын
It also helps further connect the dots why Vadic & rogue Changelings cooperated with the BQ. They were experimented with in the lab by Federation and "evolved" (as Beverly said too in earlier episodes) into solid form to a point that they couldn't be detected by traditional blood sample. They hated it, so... this was their way of reciprocating the pain inflicted on them. It raises the issue of ethics in real life lab experiments.

@kewlztertc5386 - Great theory, but I have to wonder what fetuses in what wombs you're talking about. Do you think many of the starfleet officers who got "assimilated" were pregnant? They were all under 25 and in Starfleet--so I doubt many of them were pregnant, considering tech's made it possible for people to have kids late in life. If that was the Queen's plan--why not hit an average population first? Also, if this is exactly what Matalas had in mind--he really didn't make it clear... Great idea though! Thanks for your comment!

@@nsheridan6978 Also: In some of the dialog, they said theat Dr Soong recognized Picard's disease for what it was and stole his body. Taking it to the Daystrum Institute, where he no doubt experimented with samples. Also at this same lab was the changelings who were being experimented on in am effort to create a perfect weapon. There's no way they did not attempt to combine the two and make a weapon against their greatest foe.... The Borg. I believe this is how the changelings escaped. It gave them a connection to the Borg Queen, ex: Vadiks hand. Changeling physiology isn't compatible with Borg assimilation, couldn't completely take them over. The face was the Borg queen. We must watch Vadiks conversations again knowing who the face is. Recall the time the face tortured Vadik, thid tells me the Picard DNA was in more places than just the hand, and their partnership wasn't mutual.

@@startreknitpickers5838 THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE ALREADY PREGNANT. they simply need to have the modified genes. Whenever they do get pregnant (or conceive if its a MALE) , The child will be born Borg like some kind of heratitary disease. her plan was for the entire galaxy, not just the federation. If she infected every human on earth, and they didn't know it, or even if they did, she could breed them like livestock. Meanwhile other planets would be oblivious to what was happening. This is also why thr Borg Juniors went around reciting "Kill all un-assimilated". They only want those of breeding age, those who can be and are assimilated. Not clear to you, the rest of us got it.

I really like your analysis of the Queen's being that of a jealous EX I imagine the degeneracy would be an interesting story to tell somewhat because this would follow after voyager's destructive entrance into the alpha quadrant. I think the reproduction is as referenced is simply in the spread of the DNA through biological means like maybe at the beginning of TNG the Borg literally have their organic components mating and then they applied the surgical modifications but then as they evolved through the years they learned of nanotechnology in order to do the more rapid assimilation of adults, maybe previously their technology really only worked on infants, and so that's why they had to reproduce that way. Then they moved onto assimilation of biological components and now the tech components are simply unnecessary and the spread of the collective can happen from parent to child without the extra steps of applying technology on top of the biologic. Now all they really need to do tech wise is modify transporters, and if they borrow Seven's nifty transporter gun, they could have very quick assimilation indeed. I think you're right when you suggest that the queen is tricking jack into thinking the collective is paradise, I think she could have figured out how unimatrix zero worked and leveraged that subconscious dream world in order to become the perfect trap. I will note that there are other drones still alive on the ship, but it's clear they are all weakened. I believe it's also stated that the Jupiter spot is the end of a conduit. Jack goes out to find the cube, but then the cube travelled through the conduit to get to earth.

@veggiet2009 Great points! I guess the idea we were supposed to get is that these drones made with transporters are going to kill everyone and have babies... Baby borg... After reading comments I'm putting it together now... but yeah, why not just use transporter guns? It may take a while but not as long as having a baby... Also, I can't imagine an ant or bee species evolving to where the drones mate. But I guess this is sci-fi, not a nature doc. --I'm working on some fanfic with Unimatrix 0 in the mix.
