Boriding is the process of high-temperature diffusion saturation of the surface layer of a steel product with atomic boron. This type of thermochemical treatment increases wearing quality, scale resistance (up to 800 °C), heat resistance, heat-resisting quality and corrosion resistance of steel.
There are three main boriding methods: in solid, liquid and gaseous media. Industrial application includes boriding in powder mixtures, electrolysis boriding, liquid electrolysis-free boriding, ion boriding and boriding from coatings (pastes).
Electrolysis boriding is performed during the electrolysis of molten borax. The product serves as a cathode. Boron saturation temperature - 930...950 С, holding time - 2...6 hours. The thickness of the boronized layer is 0.1...0.2 mm.
In powder boriding, amorphous and crystalline boron, boron carbide, ferroboron, and transition metal borides are used.
Boriding is used for high-speed cutting and punching tools, parts of crushing and screening machines, drilling rigs and centrifugal pumps. The wear resistance of parts after boriding increases by 2..10 times.
