Content Warning: Yellowface makeup was used to portray an Asian character (Mr. Wong) in this 1938 Detective Movie. A practice known as yellowface used to be the norm in Hollywood that Asian characters were played by white actors, often using makeup to approximate East Asian facial characteristics.
Factory owner Simon Dayton (John Hamilton) visits the office of private detective James Lee Wong (Boris Karloff) in San Francisco's Chinatown, claiming to be in danger. When Dayton is murdered, suspicion falls on scientist Carl Roemer (John St. Polis), who had recently accused Dayton of stealing his latest findings. With the help of the captain of police (Grant Withers) and Dayton's comely secretary (Maxine Jennings), Wong pursues the case, which grows more complex when a second body is found.

@5:11 ~ The way Karloff holds his cigarette (Euro-style) has always greatly annoyed me. It puts uncomfortable strain on one's wrist, and makes it clumsy to flick the ash. There is zero logic behind it! I remember Lee Tong Foo from "Across the Pacific" with Bogart. One of Foo's lines stands out- "Much trouble- alla time, much trouble."

And saying "Asian" instead of "Chinese" is ignorant, because Asia is a very big place with countless people groups. We know Karloff is portraying a Chinese detective, so the uploader should just say "Chinese".

The actor was actually white, but the Chinese character was portrayed as the smartest guy in the movie. On balance, that seems positive to me.

He was not "actually white." His ancestry was English & (East) Indian & he refused to speak the pidgin English expected of Asian characters, instead insisting on speaking proper English as Mr. Wong since Mr. Wong was supposed to have been educated at Oxford (or Cambridge?) & at Heidelberg. He objected to the usual racist portrayals of Chinese & other Asian characters.

Karloff is an actor. It does not matter if he is Indian, English or whatever. And it does not matter as an actor what kind of part he is playing, Be it Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Irish, Italian, This is what he does for a living. There is nothing racist about it. The man is acting under contract for a film studio. If it bothers you go away and watch something else. Or better yet, instead of us having to listen to you whine, Why not start your own film studio and make your own films ! Put your money where your mouth is. We will watch ours and you can watch yours.
