Note from Coach Roel Martinez
Although the intensity and level of our training is meant to mimick those of a professional standard, we must not forget our place and purpose. Both our goalkeeper, Sebastian Lutin, and myself, are quite young, we are learning together as we progress. The purpose of these excercises is to develop the goalkeepers’ technical and individual ability in all aspects. As young goalkeepers, simple mistakes and errors are inevitable, although it is these very things that we focus on the most, in order to improve on a day to day basis. This is our passion and we know as humans, we are imperfect, however we shall still strive towards perfection, all for the love of this game and this sacred position.

This little Guy has great potential BUT you have to learn him to use the shuffling side step, it can be crucial at cutbacks since he is currently just sprinting, great video and I can’t wait to see his progress!

I did the same drill but we did it harder. Do the dive catch’s on the floor but instead keep your feet off the ground! It makes your core stronger

Gracias por tu comentario, parte de vencer el miedo es conocer la tecnica correcta de impulso y de caida para no lastimarte, si tienes la tecnica adecuada esto te dara la confianza para hacerlo mas naturalmente sin pensar. Trata de aterrizar de lado, cuidando no caer sobre el codo ni sobre el estomago. Intentalo, exitos amigo👍

Stupid question from team coach trying to learn some GK stuff - I see lots of drills with footwork and then a stopping skill. What is the thinking there, as far as having some complex footwork prior to the stopping skill?

Calvin Eddings Having foot coordination is important for goalkeepers. Any save is 50% getting there and 50% dive. You must be able to move your feet quick and efficiently, making it a smooth transition to a save.

I know your comment was 6 months ago and I don't know if you are still eager to learn but here is my 2 cents on it. Someone commented that footwork is 50% of the save. I would argue it is closer to 80 or possibly even 90% of the save for one simple reason. Footwork is the foundation that determines your posture leading up to a save. To elaborate on that you could look up what goalkeepers call the "keeper ready position" (forgive me if I use roughly translated terms because I am Dutch and not 100% familiar with the American terminology used). In short the keeper ready position is a state goalkeepers try put themselves in the moment they expect the ball to start coming their way. Feet apart (not to far), balanced posture leaning slightly forward with your head and shoulders leading the rest of your body (as they should during a dive) and a your hands positioned around the waist or a bit lower / higher if you have reason to believe you can predict the shot. If your footwork is faltering and you put a bit too much weight on your heels your entire position falters because you can no longer lean into the save. You often see this with young goalkeepers who save a lot of balls with their feet. It is not that they are afraid to dive but because of their footwork being off, they are not in the proper position to execute a dive resulting in them "diving" or rather falling backwards and extending their legs trying to save the ball (note that in some situations it's faster to save a ball close to the ground with your feet so it's not the wrong thing to do in every situation). Last but not least goalkeepers are expected to adjust their position in the goal in relation to where the ball or threat is coming from. This means that goalkeepers must always be perfectly balanced on their feet moving along with the ball so they can react to any given situation starting in the keeper ready position to give themselves the best chance possible to save the ball.
