I have made most of the mistakes you listed..65 yrs old...been archery elk hunting since 1985 . This season a close friend is going on his first elk hunt with me. They anticipation of him seeing his first elk and hopefully tagging one has me already losing sleep. As i have commented on many of your videos..."i mentally recall your attitudes to inspire me to keep going when my body tries to tell me otherwise. Cant wait to see your series this fall and i wish a successful season on all of you. By the way...Where is Steve,?

You’ve got a lot to learn. I’ve been hunting elk for 55 years and I’m still learning. You will enjoy it though, there is nothing that makes you feel more alive than going to the middle of one of God’s greatest creations and have a bull screaming in your face at 30 yards. Glad to have you out. Enjoy yourself and good luck.👍

Watched this video before and yesterday returned from 6 day camp in Montana at Sage Peak in Gallatin. These tips are PURE GOLD! Thankfully, I had the very best guide, Chuck, who followed these. Spoiler….I missed my shot!! Hit a branch. This is seriously grueling and challenging archery hunting. I loved every minute of it. Can’t wait to get there again.

Thanks for all the great tips! The one that hit home the hardest was to not leave the elk while it’s bugling but walking away. We’ve ran into that SO many times. We’d call and get a response a couple hundred yards away, we’d go to where they were, call and and hear a bugle back a few hundred yards away again. And after about a mile of that we’d give up because they just seemed like they were getting farther away each time. But then one time on a solo hunt a few years ago, I decided to just keep following and after about 1-1/2 miles in a big, almost full circle, I got the bull to stop and come in quick. But... I missed the shot due to misjudged yardage (another huge mistake), even after I ranged several objects from my set up. But then the next eve, with my brother in law, did the same thing and got the bull to stop but couldn’t get a shot before he busted us. But the crazy thing is we kept after him and he turned around again after another half mile, this time to have the wind shift. All we could do is wait after the heart sink set in, as we heard the wind coming through the trees behind us, getting closer and closer, until we felt it and he took off, this time not responding to calls anymore.

Lack of patience is probably one of the biggest I’ve seen. I’ve injured 2 elk and not retrieved them because I got worried they would spook and run off. Took way to long of a shot and it ended bad, I’ve learned through experience now to not let the excitement take over.

I was just in Yellowstone & saw a couple nice bulls. The wind checker was one of my fails on my first elk hunt. I had been using it a couple times before elk season then ran out while hunting. "Always bring extra now". I did put some fine white ash from a fire pit in the bottle & it did work. Great set of tips guys.. I've made most of those mistakes.

Kody last year we had a raghorn bugling every night about 3am to 6am in eastern WA by our base camp. I had a true spike only and cow tag so he was off limits, but I did make a move on one of his 2 cows. Came in low and spooked them out. Anyhow, he had the worst bugle ever!!! It was like a teenager going through puberty in a almost comical sense. But there he was every night for 7 days cracking off and sounding like S lol. So yeah practice and get better, but don't be scared to learn in the field.

The first one is my favorite. WIND! Don't know how many times I've run into guys in the woods and realize "they just hiked all the way in here with the wind at their back"! And then they're complaining that they aren't seeing any elk! It's usually because there's a road that dead ends at the bottom of the canyon. The easiest access to elk isn't always the best access.
