Built on the Hammeren massif, the castle was to be a counterweight to the royal castle of Lilleborg located in the Almindingen forest in the central part of the island. In 1259, the archbishop's army destroyed Lilleborg and Hammershus became the island's main castle.

From the beginning of the 17th century, Hammershus began to lose its military importance due to the development of firearms and artillery.
Ny Circe consists of the apse, chancel, nave and porch. The latter is younger than the other parts, but also dates from the medieval era. The chancel features a stone altar made of limestone from the island of Öland and a stone baptismal font made in Gotland.
