note that you don't have to borrow from just minor. if you know your modes, you can borrow chords from those modes. (i.e, borrowing the major II from lydian, the flat 2 from phrygian, or adding in the flat 5 from locrian for some tritone-y goodness). additionally, you can borrow when you're in any mode, not just major

Very clear communication, I watched it once now I know what borrowed chords are. On the production side I would suggest losing the waterfall. It's just clutter and it distracts - the visual equivalent of someone playing a flute solo just loud enough to be noticed while someone is trying to sing!

Keep these up! You teach well 🔥👍 Quick question, can we borrow chords if we are in the minor scale from the relative major?
@IanODonnell
@IanODonnell 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! And that was a question I also had when I first learned about borrowed chords. Basically, you can think about it that way if you want. Hahaha However, when you're in minor, most any chord that you'd say is "borrowed" is really just taken from harmonic minor or melodic minor. So it's best if you can think of it that way, but whatever works best is fine!!

In the Zelda theme, is there an explanation as to why bVI can go to bIII? I never see any kind of IV chords going to any kind of III chors, is it normal?
@IanODonnell
@IanODonnell 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it's not functional harmony, but you can break the rules and sometimes it sounds really cool. So it's not "normal", but you could use it if you wanted!!
@DiegoElz
@DiegoElz 4 жыл бұрын
@@IanODonnell I see what you are saying, but that does leave wondering how the composer ended up using those chords. Do you think he was just trying random chords and got lucky?
@IanODonnell
@IanODonnell 4 жыл бұрын
@@DiegoElz Well, he could have been thinking of temporarily going to the key of Eb. Which would make the bVI, Ab, function as a IV in the key of Eb. So it's possible he was thinking of some sort of common chord modulation. It's honestly hard to tell though. There are a lot of really strange chord progressions in Zelda games. I've tried to analyze a lot of them and most of the time I honestly can not figure out what in the world the composer was thinking hahaha Some composers kind of develop their own system for writing. So it's hard to know for sure.

if I go .. ."c f g c/f ... c a# g# c " its wrong??? I like how it sounds... but for something not common idk
@astrophileaudiophile4100
@astrophileaudiophile4100 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing is wrong in music theory... There is a way to observe it... As you are saying that if you go from c f g c/f .... c A# G# C it's not wrong Coz you can think about it this way ... See parallel minor of C major scale is C minor and Notes of C minor C D Eb F G Ab Bb the thing is you are taking A#/Bb and G#/Ab so it is not wrong in any way because you have borrowed these chords or notes...

Thanx for this video. I had a question. If you were in a minor key, can you borrow the same way from parallel major? OK thankyou
@IanODonnell
@IanODonnell 3 жыл бұрын
When you're in minor, you can take any chords from natural minor, harmonic minor or melodic minor. So it's not exactly borrowing from parallel major, but you have multiple chords to choose from.
@saraj4331
@saraj4331 3 жыл бұрын
@@IanODonnell Wow. Thanks for telling me this. I appreciate it. So major could borrow from parallel minor but minor cant borrow from parallel major.
@IanODonnell
@IanODonnell 3 жыл бұрын
@@saraj4331 Yes, but borrowing from harmonic and melodic minor really does accomplish the same thing basically. And to be honest, and you can do whatever you want hahaha So you can borrow from major if you want and it sounds cool.
