borzois actually evolved their long legs and nose to reach food on dinner tables. kinda like giraffes.

back in the 80s my mom babysat for a family with a borzoi, and she always tells this one story about that dog whenever people bring the breed up. apparently one day the mom of the family my mom babysat for handed her a bag of those hostess powdered donuts and went "hey, be sure to hide these from the dog until we get back", and my mom, being 14 at the time, thought that it was safe to put the donuts at the center of the massive round farmhouse-style table the family had in their kitchen because the dog had been trained not to jump on the table. apparently she looked away from the dog for a second to keep an eye on the baby, and the next thing she knew she saw the dog lean down without even having to hop up on the table, grab the top of the bag in its amazingly long snout, do a 180, and ran upstairs with the donuts. by the time she found what room the dog had hidden in, the donuts were long gone. apparently the parents weren't even mad because they thought it was so funny that my mom thought you could put food on a dining table to keep it away from a borzoi like you do for smaller dogs.

They're cute, but I would never allow a dog to scavenge for what's on my dinner plate.
