Bosch Alternator Voltage Mod (15.3v)

120A Bosch alternator modified to 15.3v. A simple diode mod to give 15.3v instead of the factory 14.5v when charging a single lead acid battery (test only).
PLEASE NOTE: This is merely a proof of concept. The diode used in this video is only 3A rated and not enough on it's own for the field current at max load. After the video once fitted back to the engine, I swapped the diodes out to 2 parallel diodes in series (4x 3A diodes in total). This bumped the voltage up to about 15.8v at the alternator.
Expected field current is aprox. 6-8A max, so a single 3A diode could get very hot and blow quite quickly under heavy load.
I must also mention any modification you do to your alternator or vehicle is done so at your own risk and I am not responsible for the result. Thank you :)

Please read the video description - I should have mentioned the spec of the diode used in the video is under-spec. It is a 3A 100v diode, which IS NOT MAN ENOUGH. I will be changing the diode(s) to be able to handle the field winding current (about 8A) and will likely do a follow-up video once i have got it running on the vehicle.

15 v is over charging the battery.. 14 point 4 etc is normal charging, any thing greater is forcing more voltage into the battery. damaging it over time. pretty quickly

Sounds interesting! you can also get totally separate replacement regulator modules, but this is the cheap way for cheapskates like me :D thanks for watching

@@sootpig i have a bmw e36 with still stock alternator and i want to put a smaller pulley to increase voltage to about 15V I am woreied car electronics will be damaged in some way Will this slight increase in voltage cause any damage?

Thanks for the explanation, I never knew that touching 12v to the round side of the plug which I believe is pin 1 it would keep charging at the specified voltage predetermined in the VR itself, nice work around to get the higher voltage. Where would I find what the pin 2 is used for? Thanks in advance.

I have a Bosch Alternator ERR 5834 that has voltage output of 14.2V. I fitted a new calcium battery that requires charge voltage of 14.7 volts. How can I acheive this with a voltage regulator as you have shown?

On a 240D running ac wipers headlights steroe with no ignition system and you want to compensate all the load using a potentiometer knob on the dash to dial up the voltage as the voltage guage drops into the 1p.5,11.v range is that a viable application to ovoid running your battery down? Were the standard 55 amp alternator is not keeping up with the load

Nice vid..I have a stock denso 90a alt, it reads 13.5 v What can I do to get 14.4-14.8v? And is there anyway I can increase the Amp output for a bigger car stereo, (Battery- Northstar agm 92ah, Toyota - 121 nze engine) Thanks.

Add 2 diodes for desired voltage. You can increase amp output at idle with a smaller pulley. You can increase overall output by having the alt rewired but theres a limit to this and can sometimes lower idle output. Before doing any of that make sure to get a big3 upgrade. Overall depends on the wattage of your system, if it's gonna be like 1200w then just get a beafier alternator

What size diodes would you use to get a charging rate of 14.4-14.7? I have dual northstar agm deep cycle batteries in my jeep wrangler and the stock alt only charges at 13.98-14.1v. Manufactorer of the batteries states they need at least 14.4v to properly charge. Stock alt is 160amp and have done a big 7 upgrade in 1/0 fine strand cable

A single silicone diode would give you around 0.7v drop depending on the spec. Which might be a little too much for your AGM battery. You could try a schottky diode as these are typically lower voltage drop than a silicone diode. But you'd need to know how much field current would be flowing through the diode, as current flow effects voltage drop. The larger schottky diodes (5-10A rated) are typically ~0.5v forward bias (voltage drop) when operating in their ideal current range.

This will not cause you to lose current its just going to slightly lift the voltage setpoint put on the alternator. If you were to bypass the regulator then the alternator could easily put out dozens of volts. Slightly lifting the voltage like this will safely increase the voltage as to not damage yourself or your vehicles components.

Thx alot for a great video. I’m currently struggling problem with two battery setup in my vw transporter. I have diode isolator between batteries and alternator connected to the isolator. But the problem is that diode 0,4-0,6 voltage drop. The charge indicator light pops up and battery isn’t fully charged. This might be the solution for it.

Yeah!! I managed to get it work. I used 4 x 3A diodes. Only problem I still have is an issue with the exite. But I made button that connects battery and alternator when pressed

No. Too much current for a pot, and you're looking for a fixed volt drop, the volt drop across the pot will change with field current so the voltage would fluctuate.

Standard voltage is 14.2 so a single silicone diode will bring it up about 0.5-0.7v to 14.7 - 15v ish.

i think its not good idea make over 14.5 v can burn all other electrical device in the car , cause of that they did not make over 14.5v .......but well be very nice if you can make diode diagram not go over 14.5 . so well be the same regulator ,if regulator burn .maybe we can take strong diode from old oven cause they are very strong ,fex.
