I test my Specialized Turbo Levo E mountain bike against a Trek Rail to try to work out which has the most powerful electric e bike motor. Is it the Bosch motor or the Brose motor?

Good review . most of these motors are soo close to each other in performance that i would go for the reliability factor above all else . I have a gen 3 cx that i love in tour mode and turbo for steep hills . the only thing i don't like about the turbo is you have to pedal at a pretty high cadence to get the most out of the assist . A the age 75 , i find that i'm getting winded waay too soon and i'm not getting any fitter , so i lost my mind and bought a new bike today with the new german motor, Sachs . it has enormous power at very low cadence . i would say i have to pedal about half as fast compared to the bosch and get the same speed up a hill. a Super good motor for old timers .

@@bestdayevermtb2 I'm also on the bosch motor, I'm also fine with the "noise", mine is pretty quiete, only noticable on very steep climbs. I've got both the Bosch and Brose, and just like your report, I can't definitively say which is more powerful either. The Brose is on a slightly longer enduro frame, whereas the Bosch is on bit shorter wheelbase, so I slightly prefer the latter on the more technical trails. I really like the eMtb mode on the Bosch, but I like the quieter Brose. Yes, just choose the color you like!

Last year e-bikes were the devil. No one wanted anything to do with them. I traveled all around northern Oregon. Went to about 10 bike shops and found 2 emtb's in stock. I was literally told to leave one shop when I asked if they had any. Not kidding. This year I have noticed most everyone is accepting emtb's. Some are excited to ride and sell them. Most trails are open to ebikes. It helps that it's more difficult to tell the difference. The motorcycle shop where I work will soon be a Specialized Ebike dealership. Hence my desire to buy a Levo Comp.

@@rickbault1221 I had wondered about that. I have ridden in Europe and they are hugely popular. The bike shops sell pretty much E bikes only now. I know of no where in NZ where e bikes are not allowed and most races include an e bike category. I had arranged even a few years back to do a ride with some Italians and they were shocked to find I was going to do it on a "muscle" bike as they called them. I didn't do the ride. I do hope America develops a similar mindset as I would love to do a big tour one day with an e bike.

The Levo felt more powerful at lower cadences than the Trek to me. The Trek was being ridden in EMTB and the Levo in a custom mid-power setting that still provided full assistance at the peak. Might be worth repeating with both bikes in full Boost/Turbo mode (100/100) to remove a potential variable. All in all two great bikes and a fun day out.

Great review but even if they are almost identical you choose the one that's the most reliable IMO. (Forget the color LOL) . The Brose has had reliability issues so they've extended the warranty to overcome that. It would be great if Brose could overcome their issues and if they have it's a win overall for all riders. The Brose is exclusive to Specialized so you don't have a choice. Outside of the Brose/Specialized Combo the wide world of other brands and bikes becomes available if you can't afford the extra $$$ for the Specialized. A bike that is getting rave reviews independently is the 2021 Merida E One Sixty which uses the Shimano EP8 so there is another choice. Enjoy...

Its 2022 now and Bosch has updated their motor. I tested them side by side at a shop recently and the Bosch just felt like it had a whole extra level of assist. More importantly for offroad the Bosch just felt like it comes on quicker from a complete stop on an uphill. Brose is definitely the smoother and more natural feeling motor though. As someone coming off a SL who is looking for more punch I am leaning toward the Bosch on the Trek but then I am old and need all the help I can get.

After riding in the mountains now I find the turbo mode on the Bosch a bit difficult to modulate in the slow technical stuff so its not that useful unless the trail opens up. I find I have to ride in emtb for anything technical which despite what they say does not seem to offer as much pop as the top assist turbo mode. I wish bosch would let you adjust those top two modes like I have heard Specialized does. I do see from Robs Rides that the new model lets you adjust eco and tour but they aren't that useful in the mountains for me. I would like to adjust how fast the turbo comes on to make it ideal.

We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. kzfaq.infoUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

Think that might be subjective. My friendchad had 3 Trek bikes and 4 motor changes. I asked why he still went for the Bosch motor. He replied by saying it gets changed under warranty no problem and on his new bike bosch has extended the warranty period

In turbo all motors have plenty of power. What’s more important to me is how they behave in techy climbs rather than uphill motogp style like this video. And please don’t get me wrong any kind of test is good and is interesting to compare but this one is not really useful, for the reasons above mentioned. Never buy an ebike because the motor is more powerful, that’s not how it works in the trails. Regards!

I think you are 100% correct. The video was made as a bit of fun and was shocked at just how many people viewed it. I think what the video did show was both bikes were very similar. My latest bike has a Bosch motor and I am enjoying it just as much as my old Brose. If you have seen my other videos the channel is all about having fun on e bikes and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Thanks for the feedback.

All I learned was that regardless of what motor you using on your e bike it isn't much help unless you use the turbo mode to help you avoid being way out of breath at the top. One of these guys was seriously huffing and puffing trying to catch his breath. What's the bloody point in having an e bike if you don't maximize its capabilities when climbing hills?
@bestdayevermtb2
@bestdayevermtb2 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. It was me puffing as I am not that fit. Both bikes were set up to deliver 100% power. I know some people noticed the levo was in the middle setting but the power output is customizable so my middle setting will give 100%. I am definitely not the sort of person to kill myself like that if I had more power available.

Didn't ride either bike in turbo. The trek was in EMBT mode and the Levo in Trail set to 50 to 100%. In both these situations the bikes will put out 100% if you put a descent effort in. If you try riding up a hill like this and switch to turbo you will find no increase in power. We did test this. Given how close the bikes were in times I think it is a valid real world test. We were not looking for a theoretical difference in power but a real world test, with the bikes set up how they would typically be ridden.

Bosch or Brose ? Neither ,,,get a Sachs . The wattage is the same , so its the torque / Nms AND how it's distributed in the different assist levels that determines how easily and fast you will go up a hill. Bosch has a top assist in " turbo " mode of 340 % Brose has a higher assist , but i forgot the actual numbers . Sachs has 110 Nms and 380 % assist in the highest setting . I just today bought a Nox e bike with the new sachs motor and this thing has ⚾️⚾️s . I went up a pretty steep hill in a small rear sprocket and the highest assist . it flew up the hill in a very low cadence . i changed gears to a larger sprocket and it accelerated from there . i didn't test beyond that , i just ordered the bike .😂
