After years of using the same corded DeWalt Random Orbit Sander, it's time for a change. There are THREE major boxes I have to check when selecting a new one. 1) Fast braking. When I turn it off, I do not want to wait for the sanding head to stop rotating. 2) Weight. I want it to be nice and light. 3) Dust collection. I want to be able to hook it up to my dust collection system with minimal fuss and maximum sucking power. I chose the Bosch GEX12V-5N 12V amzn.to/3ibnYqA and the Makita XOB01Z 18V amzn.to/3ij0uzG since I already have those battery platforms. Check out my video to see which one wins!

I have the Bosch 12v sander for several months now and I love it. Upgraded from the DeWalt. Just love the Bosch sander, works like it should.

I use to love that dewalt sander and got over it the last time I replaced it. Returned it and bought the festool. I’ll never go back. Great review though my brother.

I have the makita 18v and I havnt crossed over to any other platforms cause Im stubborn. But I saw and picked up the bosch 18v one at Lowes yesterday and wow!! It feels like a real pneumatic DA. I have several bosch corded tools and they are great. Im going have to get it.

That’s great to hear. Yea I invested in about 4 platforms to be able to take advantage of certain tools. Thanks for watching and your comment!

You’re just gonna have to deal with that goofy dust extraction set up that they have. Festool in-line extractor design is much better.

I have the Bosch GEX 185-li and its break system is also really fast, much faster than the Makita on this video. I thought they all worked this way but now I'm even happier with the tool.

thoughts on vibration between the Dewalt and the Bosch?
@diywithandrew

The Dewalt vibrated much more than the Bosch in my opinion.

so have you purchased the new 12v sander yet? pretty badass 3 different pads come with it!! i have gotten rid of all my other sanders and went all cordless bosch. the 18v are nice when you have more area to cover. but the 6ah 12v batteries help to none of this matters if a guy has several batteries though!
@diywithandrew

I have not even heard of that? Is it the GEX? I’ll definitely check it out. I’ve also been wanting to upgrade to 6ah 12v batteries!

To be honest the 12 V Bosch is a bit under powered compared to the 18 V model.

Unfortunately this review leaves out a couple of extremely important points that I hate about this new sander. This tool only runs on the new Bosch 12v batteries which isn't mentioned anywhere in the description of this tool or even the owners manual. Bosch did insert a loose single page addendum into the box that lists the specific part numbers of the new Bosch batteries that will work in it but of course you don't get to see that until you have paid for the tool and find out that many or all of the genuine Bosch batteries you already own fit into the tool but will not turn it on. I never read that extra page about the batteries that came with the first one I received so I called the Bosch support number and they demanded the serial number of my tool before they would answer any questions or talk to me. When I gave it to them they still refused to answer my questions because I had purchased it from the Bosch Store on Amazon. They told me to talk to Amazon and ended the call. OK, right there every bit of respect I ever had for Bosch went in the toilet. Forty five years in finish carpentry and a owner of many Bosch tools and I'm done buying anything from them. I called Amazon and they were very friendly but know nothing about the tools and gladly offered to replace the sander. While I was waiting for my replacement sander to arrive I ordered two new Bosch 3 ah batteries for it because the one battery I did have that would work in that sander would only run it at full speed for less than one minute then the sander would suddenly slow to about 2/3 of the original rpm where it would remain until the battery was depleted. I assumed my old battery was just weak or something. My replacement sander and my new 3ah batteries arrived and guess what, the replacement sander does exactly the same thing with both of my new more powerful 3ah batteries. It's a total joke!! The sander only does meaningful work for less than one minute and then the software they built into the tool turns down the speed by a third. At that point you may as well just be hand sanding. If you really want to waste a lot of time sanding some small project this is the sander for you! Shame on Bosch, their tool designers, and shame on their customer nonsupport. Those two new batteries that I was sure would make this a useful tool cost a lot more than the tool itself and they only make the sander run longer AFTER the speed controller has throttled back to near idle speed which still happens after less than one minute at full speed. Don't expect to be able to buy or use any of those cheap aftermarket batteries for this tool either. I have read other reviews that say they will not work at all in this tool so fortunately I didn't waste my money trying that. They have put some very restrictive circuitry in this tool. Now it just sits in my shop unused reminding me of how I got screwed by what used to be one of my favorite tool brands. No longer. I can only assume all of the latest Bosch 12v tools have this same problem.

Thanks for taking time to share your experience. I have over 10 year old 12v Bosch batteries from back to 2012 and they all work in the sander just fine. Each of them have their respective run time based on their amp hours. Had your battery issue been the case for me, there's no way I would have kept the tool. As far as the speed cycling down during use, again, that is not my experience other than the battery just depleting. I will say that I have been disappointed by what I have seen from Bosch in the last few years in terms of American tool development and market presence, but I can honestly say that I am not having your issues with my sander. If I have a large sanding project that requires more power and run time, I reach for my DeWalt corded sander. Again, sorry to hear about your experience.

Well mr white you are entitled to your opinion. I disagree. I’ve had my drills for almost 10 years and various other Bosch tools for years and are all performing great. However I haven’t been too pleased with their latest marketing and tool offerings in the last few years.

Not really. What stops a dc motor quickly is if you short out the motor connections. So Bosch must have a large capacitor and load up the motor when switched off.
@ScheiBwerfer
@ScheiBwerfer Жыл бұрын
I have the 18V version, and it stops almost immediately. Any DC motor can be stopped quickly if you short out the motor windings, dumping the rotational energy as heat. Not hard to do, but it takes extra circuitry, which the Bosch obviously has, and the Makita clearly does not.
