You are a great actor sir... Can you share how you and Rajkumar Rao prepared for that scene?... And bcz of this scene youngsters got their interest in this web series. Bcz almost non of us (people born in late 80's.. early 90's )have any idea of that incident. But you played quite well with your expressions. The way you abusing students was like any one can easily hate you.... Please share your experiences for this particular scene!

Thank you so much for your kind words, and your question! I don't know the process Rajkummar Rao uses to prepare, but I can tell you on set he was suprisingly subdued. I expected him to act with fury, but he played it super cool. I learned from him that it's too tempting to overact, but the skilled actor has confidence that 'underplaying' it will work better in the end. As for me, I trained in New York at the legendary Stella Adler School of Acting, and then in Los Angeles under Oscar-nominated Nina Foch, and then in India with theatre directors Neeraj Kabi and Akarsh Khurana. Each has taught me to approach the script in a different way. For Bose, I played Professor Otten. The real Professor Oaten was a complicated personality. So I need to be clear that I played the character as written in the series. (Quick Side note: The writers of 'Bose: Dead/Alive' used my Prof Otten character as an amalgam of British racist colonial arrogance. So, several Britishers combined into one. The historical record is not clear but the chappal might have been done by another Britisher at Presidency College. But for sure, the dialogue, "You are a beastly people with a beastly religion," was actually said by Winston Churchill in 1943, speaking about the Bengal famine: www.independent.co.uk/news/world/world-history/winston-churchill-adolf-hitler-no-better-shashi-tharoor-indian-politician-post-colonialist-author-a7641681.html ) Most people who are 'evil' believe that they are doing 'good'. So I played Otten with the idea that he believes he is 'civilising' Indians -- that he is doing a good thing. Sometimes you teach with encouragement and sometimes with a stick. He is trying to make his students understand the world the way he sees it. Of course, his limitation is that he does not have respect to even try to see the world in any other way than his own. This scene with the chapal gets the most views, but I think it's important to see the scene following also, in which Professor Otten does not want to press charges. He is outraged, but also a coward. So I had to act both sides of him. Thank you again for your interest! Amazinggg acting by Zachary sir... I myself perform in theatres and from my experience I know its not an easy task to play a role of a negative character..Also, antagonists have whole 3hrs in a film to prove themselves but here, you had just 2mins and hardly 10mins in the whole series to establish your character, to make your audience grow hatred towards you and you did that job with such an ease... Amazing performance.. I personally like Rajkummar Rao's performance but your performance demands applauds👏👏👏

I completed this series yesterday night itself. I hv watched other movies on Bose too but this one's is captivating, entertaining and yes, informative. What more is interesting was the love life of Netaji n Emily. Emily was the only lady whom he loved other than Bharat Mata. And she deserved his love coz she never pressurized Bose to give up fighting for nation, lived without her for years. Such was a wonderful story.

If you ask the top five reasons to history why India got independence. History will reply the first and top most reason with the legendary AZAAD HIND FAUJ ( Britishers also confirm the same ) Salute to great son of INDIA. Although Bose didn't get the recognition and respect and stature as the big leaders like Nehru ji in government schemes, or Bharat Ratna or the recent statue like Shree Sardar got just in my home state Gujarat, he remained in heart of the people of this nation which is biggest place anybody can earn. The miracles he did like escaping house arrest or using hitler for Indian independence, forcing japanese to act at his will or conquering south east Asia's Indians heart by great speeches. The impossible made possible. Netaji gave glimpse of the Indian fury to Britishers that they don't want to stay for mere few months to even transfer the power. Born with great intelligence, only leader who has defeated the candidate poised by Gandhi ji, great leader, fluent speaker, sharp strategist and above all lived only for the Nation. Simple answer in terms of impact in gaining freedom 1)Germany declaring wars especially Hilter (WW2) 2)Subhash Chandra Bose and his Azad Hind fauj Then building a United India: Sardar Patel who after partition made sure that all princely states be united so India can't be captured ever again. Sadly, Gandhiji and Nehru take all the credit. I am not saying Gandhiji didn't do anything he united all of India's people and his non-cooperate movement could have gotten us freedom but he withdrawed last minute (due to few people retaliating to britishers who were hitting them) which led to Bhagat Singh and co. He didn't even save Bhagat Singh and co. or India would have been united earlier as well.

You acted really well sir, I had also read in a book that after that incident Otten changed as a person, that complexity was well portrayed by you in this scene as well as the next scene where u reject filing the complaint. The scene was very nicely and smoothly played by you Sir.. Kudos to you... and the acting was very to the point ... you did not overdo it.. nor did Rajkumar sir overact.. i saw the following scene too.. nd the way u acted in both the scene was really great.. providing that transition.. where in one scene he is bravely preaching.. nd in the other scene cowardly saying not to press any charges on Bose... Overall was a great series and as a actor both of you really performed it well... And I really hope Bose had held some powerful position in Russia and was the reason of our friendship with the Soviets..

Dear sir, As far as my memory goes there was a play in the 1980s, where quite a different reason was shown and that play was witnessed by people from pre independent era who were alive at that time, where it was shown that Otean had said, " horses and Indians eat grams " for which he was beaten with chappal and that too on the stairs...

Thank you for your comment, sir. The writers of 'Bose: Dead/Alive' used my Prof Otten character as an amalgam of British racist colonial arrogance. So, several Britishers combined into one. The historical record is not clear but the chappal might have been done by another Britisher at Presidency College. (Please see this thread with comments from Anuj Dhar, the author of the book that the series was based on.
