Are you considering moving to Bosnia and Herzegovina? In this video we will discuss the options to get a residence permit in the country. We will also list the advantages and disadvantages about living in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia is a country in Southeastern Europe, and was part of the Former Yugoslavia. After the fall of Yugoslavia, Bosnia got independent in the 1990's. Today Bosnia is a stable and safe country, and probably one of the most underrated places to visit and live in Europe.
Let's discuss how to get a residence permit in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an European Union member, therefore, EU and non-EU citizens are broadly subject to the same residency laws in the country. The only main difference is between citizens which require a visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ones who don't.
Most citizens of Western countries do not need a visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina. The list includes EU and US Citizens, British as well as Canadian citizens. Citizens of some other countries can enter Bosnia without a visa, such as nationals of Russia, China and Turkey.
Those who can enter Bosnia without the need for a visa can apply for a residence permit, directly in the country.
There are many types of residence permits in Bosnia. The most common ones are for family members of Bosnians citizens, or are coming to study or work in the country.
However, there are many more interesting possibilities to acquire a residence permit in Bosnia. You can acquire one by owning a company (even as a self-employed person), or buying real estate in the country. These are the permits we will discuss in this post.

@@shehleeza They will register the purchase for you, it's nothing you need to do. It will give you a resident visa, allowing you to live there. You dont have to register a "small cow business", just buy some cows and let the eat grass.

@@shehleeza Oh, I see, then you need to register a business and a lawyer or notary will do that. I'm not sure the business needs to actively trade, just have a business registered and then the business will be able to buy the house. Then there will be an annual expense to keep it updated etc, but it's not too expensive. Since you will be the director of the business, that will be your new job and on the basis of that job you will get residence. So you will then have a business, a job, a house. The house will be owned by your business, but thats still kind of yours, because you're the owner of the business.

Thank you for this well made and interesting video. You could mention its currency stability as a very significant advantage of Bosnia. As you know BAM has been pegged to old DM so has a fixed relationshop to €, unlike that of Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and so on.

yes, it is a good point. HRK and MKD are also pegged to the EUR.

@@traveleconomics Thanks, I knew about HRK (but don't think it's so significant as Croatian economy is more vibrant). In case of MKD, yes, pegging to € is probably a big plus for North Macedonia.

Make sure to get a Criminal Records Document from your home country prior to moving to Bosnia or Kosovo. Getting the document takes weeks and without it you are unable to get a temporary residence. Otherwise you have to go to the embassy, takes longer, more expensive and delievery via post is a gamble.

This really depends on your country of citizenship. In some countries you can get it in minutes, in others, it takes days.

You can buy the house and never start the business. That is enough for the residence permit. But it depends on your country of citizenship whether you can buy a property in Bosnia as an individual or not.

Great video and thank you for the easy excess to all the information you shared. I have a question wich wasn´t answered in your video I think. Do you need to stay more than 183days in Bosnia when you own a business and taking advantage of the low tax? Im planning to open a business in bosnia but I work in Germany the whole year. I can maybe chill one month in Bosnia but 183 days is way too much. Thank you.

@@traveleconomics Hello, Thank you for your reply! I am an self employed electrical technician. I pay about 50% in tax and I want to pay less tax. I always have to be in germany or the netherlands to do my job. I want to start an business in Bosnia so I can transfer all my money to Bosnia and take advantage of the low tax rate. At the same time maybe invest some more in Bosnia. My question is if it is necessary to stay 183 days in Bosnia to take advantage of the low tax rate or not. If not I will directly buy a house in Bosnia change my passport , keep my appartment in Germany and start making money on my creditcard from Bosnia so I can save some money

@@iTranquillo Lol, thats not gonna work. if it did, Germany would be bankrupt and Bosnia would have population of 80 million germans. Germany wont let you earn money there and allow you to be a resident of Bosnia.

It depends if you are single or not, and to which city you are moving to and your lifestyle. If single and in Sarajevo, renting a place, you can live even less than 1000 euros a month.

Hi! I have a question, in the case of receiving a residence permit by owning a property, does it limit to residential property? Does that mean that if I buy a plot for example or a piece of land I will not be able to get one? And what if I get a piece of land with hopes of building a place to live in there in a future? Will it still count? What are the limitations for that?

Dobar dan. As a foreigner you can do it, the citizenship is no impediment from taking a mortgage. The problem is that you will need to show you have income in Bosnia (or collateral) to be able to be get your mortgage approved. If you don't have income in Bosnia, and don't live there, the best option is to get a loan in your country of residence to buy a property in Bosnia.

@@traveleconomics Thank you for quick reply. I think that at least in Portugal you don't been incomes in Portugal what's meke things easier. I can work here in Finland untill retirement and pay during that time mortgage loan to Portugal bank. But it's not really a problem, it just reduce the options where I can take the loan and still Bosnia (Sarajevo) sounds very good option. If possible, maybe I buy a apartment for vacation visiting or if I rent the apartment, is it counted as income? How much I need to pay taxes (also that 10%?) and is the other costs / obligations as a "landlord" if I rent the apartment to someone?

@@stefanhenneken5415 any income derived from Bosnia will be taxed at 10% in Bosnia. If you are good enough to declare it. After you see the paperwork you probably wont declare it. And if you are renting out your place for 6,000 marks per year, then minus expenses you will be earning maybe 4,000 marks per year or 2,000 Euro. You will owe Bosnia 200 euro in taxes per year. Bosnia wont be spending 500,0000 euro chasing you for tax evasion of 200 euro, thats for sure.

English yes, Russian no. Although Bosnian, as a Slavic language, has a high degree of similarity with Russian, maybe some 60-70% of the words have the same root.

Bosnia was at Tito´s time communistic, in school they taught Russian, so a lot of people will still know it, but not the younger generation.

@@whereisplain as a bosnian american, I can't understand russian at all 😂! Only simple things like numbers and animals are about the same. Plus Bosnian has turkish loan words that do not appear in Russian.

@@traveleconomics yes, it dose. I keep looking for videos on citizenship hoping to find underrated non-eu countries (with good taxes though). Russia has always been an interest to me (i was born there in the 90s) but my parents never made an attempt towards citizenship before carrying me back to Nigeria with them (they are both Nigerians).

@@serious_nigga yeah, if you don't mind the cold and want low taxes, Russia is indeed an option. I'd choose Ukraine or Bulgaria though, also low taxes but less cold. Better passport long term as well.

Because it's full of unimaginative quite lazy people with little initiative and good place to succeed if you have any good qualities as the competition is very low. In a country full of blind people, a one eyed man is king.
