Boss have been making compressors since the CS-1 was introduced in 1978. Since then they have put out 3 others, but are they different? This video will examine each model and compare some against each other.

I've got an 1982 Boss CS-2 and I agree. There's something about it that other compressors doesn't have.

Nice comparison. The CP-1x is, by far, my favorite compressor pedal, and I’ve had quite a few, including the Origin Cali76 and other “boutique” compressors. Boss knocked it out of the park with this one. It’s stellar.

Really encouraging to hear this positive comparison to the pricey Cali 76, as I'm on quest for a new comp - the digital CP-1X is really calling to me - honestly because I hear it's Quiet! I have the OD-1X, and it's almost my Fav OD now, and is hands down the quietest. Thanks you've moved me closer to calling Sweetwater ;-)

This is so very cool, Thankyou. Still looking to buy a CS-3, only have a Behringer CS400 on my Behringer Board and it is awesome. My other board has Joyo Dyna Compressor which is also amazing, each provide awesome compression and sustain. Thankyou, cheers.

The CP-IX was prettly bloody fancy schmancy. Flawless in fact. Possibly the perfect choice you could make. Very impressive indeed. I have a JHS 3 Series compressor which has a toggle switch which has a "bright" option (identical idea to the first Boss one you demoed). Can't fault it for myself. The volume knob goes way over parity. I use it on a couple of songs where I do this Duane Eddy twangy thing and it cuts through like you wouldn't believe.

The CS-1 is my favorite, has its own punch and cluck! The CS-3 was on my board from 1992 until 2016. I’m not to fond of the CS-2 as the CS-3 is better. You know what I’m going to say about the X model!!! The CS-1 is the oldest boss pedal I own dating back to 1978 and it has the intermittent LED malarkey!

Swweet, my CS-2 ... So damn FORMIDABLE, versatile, it has character. I've only got compression while in the studio to compare it to tho ... It gives the right shaping. Might be just me but in your vid, the japanese cs3 has clear and plentiful bottom end; even when you turn the tone up on the malaysia cs3 the bottom doesn't roar at me in the vid. That's the character thing, like the CS2 is gives me (not thru a tone dial tho!) Tasty guit colour you have there (; She's put together well

Quick question...i hoped you would show cs1 vs cs3 as well...i wonder how much 'tone' knob should you dial on cs3 to get the 'treble' sound from cs1? I hope you know what i mean :)

Nice comparison! They all have their unique strengths IMO, but I have used the CS-2 for years - it just has a really nice attack. The CS-1 can be fun, despite the low output; the CS-3 has a broad range and useful tone knob, and the CP-1x is the most hifi i.e works pretty well after dirt in my experience. Cheers

Do you maybe know how much 'tone' on cs3 you have to dial in to get the sound of 'treble' mode on cs1 by any chance?

Hi Jason, I have 2 x cs2's one is march 84 and Jan 82. The older one has grub screw knobs and a slight anomaly. The sticker on the back says made in Japan but is a separate sticker to the black label sticker, it has been stuck on afterwards over the top of the black label. Have you seen any boss pedals like this? It has "use a coin to open battery compartment" on the back. I had thought the sticker may have been fake, but all cs2 are made in Japan as per your video so I thought I would ask another Boss nerd for your opinion. Great video, thanks. Paul
@JasonAyalaSpare
@JasonAyalaSpare 4 ай бұрын
Hey Paul, that's quite the anomaly. I've never seen a sticker saying 'use a coin to open'. Do you use them in series or in parallel?

Nice video, but I need more in depth specs on the CS-3 controls which aren't available on the Roland website. Does anyone know what the threshold ranges are and also what the compression ratios are on the CS-3? Both threshold and compression ratios are on the same sustain knob and are factory preset, so assuming the sustain knob is set at 1o' clock, what is the db threshold and what what is the compression ratio likely to be?
@JasonAyalaSpare
@JasonAyalaSpare 3 ай бұрын
That would be good to know. I know with some compressors the ratio and threshold are combined in the one knob, such as the dyna Comp.

I bought one in Japan in 1990, but found it seemed to add a little fuzz when trying to play with a clean sound. I don't think it was just noise. I may have to pull it out and have another play with it.

@@mushymystic I have since pulled out again and found the problem. I had been underpowering it. It required an ACA power adaptor which actually supplies 12V. When I brought it back to Australia and asked at the local shop for a Boss power adaptor for it they gave me a PCA and I didn't know any different. I have now bypassed the voltage drop resistor in the pedal and it runs happily off of my 9V power supply. It only took me 30 years to work it out.

My black label cs3 went on the fritz so I purchased a newer sliver label cs3 on reverb and was thoroughly unimpressed. Lost was that magical creaminess and the string attack (different from the attack knob) was unbearable. Also was way moe treble-y. Tried a friend's sliver label and experience the same displeasure. Anyone else experienced this? Should I look for a black label or was my original just a "special" luck of the draw?

The X series are not COSM, they employ Boss’ MDP technology. Still digital and I get that digital dirt pedals don’t always sound as good as analog, but in the CP-1X the technology really shines. The CP-1X gets great reviews, and it’s my favorite compressor pedal. Very quiet, very transparent, very tweakable from subtle to spuashed. Don’t let the fact that it’s digital put you off. It’s a fantastic compressor.
