I just bought a GT-3 to use as a midi controller for my amp. They're still great little units. Cost much less than a dedicated controller, plus I can choose to use some of the effects of I want.

I just picked up a mint GT-5 for 50$. I thought I would just use it as a MIDI foot controller, but after playing with it and tweaking it a bit, I am REALLY digging it! I just sounds great. I know that the ( excellent sounding) distortions/drive section is all analog but all of the effects sound really rich and full. The compressor was especially surprising...not an "over the top" style like a cs-3, more smooth like a Keeley, no joke...( I own both) . The auto-wah is right up there with a Mad Professor Snow White ( I also own) and the list goes on. The key is to use it as an effect board only with a good amp. Skip the amp and cab sims, spend a couple hours with it and you have a cheap, easy to use, HIGH quality, reliable pedal board!

I have the gt5... I agree with most of what you say, however the auto wah sounds absolutely terrible on my gt5!!!, but very impressed by the distortions,delay, chorus and reverbs on this unit. I have a electro Harmonix worm in the loop for my phaser, vibrato, auto Wah effects. Which is a downer as I'm trying to save space, but I feel those are the weakest effects in the gt5 at the mo.

I had a GT-5 back in the day. Interesting that you say it sounds a little better than the GT10 cos back in the day everybody claimed the gt5 didn't sound as good as buying individual pedals. Which was true with some sounds but overall it was a beast of a unit. Only issue i had with it was there was a significant delay in hitting the pedal and when the effect would kick in. However I regret ever selling it.

@nuthinbutlove
@nuthinbutlove 7 ай бұрын
I still have mine and a second that I used for parts. I never had that issue with the delay when hitting pedals and I had to make some split-second sound changes. In fact at one time it was the main pedalboard for professional touring and studio players because it flowed so smoothly, was a beast, and was built like a tank so it could take the road abuse without any issues. I'm thinking maybe it was a glitch in your particular unit. Haven't used mine in a few years but I would definitely compare it to a few of Bosses analog pedals. It just takes awhile to tweak for perfection. The only issue I had was there was no way to lock in patches. If my cable hit the big knob on the top/front of the board it would move and change patches. I solved that by putting a fresh piece of gaffer tape over it before every gig and made sure to remove it before I left the stage so as not to leave any tape residue. It was a bit of a hassle but it worked. I much prefer the GT5 to the GT10. The GT5 sounded closer to analog than any board I've ever heard or played.

Had both and believe me the GT-5 sounds a lot better, I got rid of my GT-10 in just a few months, no matter what I plugged it into, direct into PC, Combos, Hughes and Kettner amp, you name it...it sounded like absolute digital distorted crap, how this pedal has gone down the pan the later its got I'll never know, how can they mess it up? Seriously there is no comparison....the GT-5 is better by a long, long way! I wouldn't even recommend the GT-10 to just play in the house, its crap, the distortion has a terrible trembly scratching digital tone to it, awful, keep well away from it, you've been warned.

Thank you for this interesting video! Even though I don't have first hand experience with the GT-10, I could make that case for the GT-5 in comparison to the GT-6 - and to some extent GT-Pro/GT-8. Playing mostly heavy stuff in a semi pro Cover Band, I try to come close to all kinds of familiar guitar sounds of many very different bands. My combination of GT-5 and a Marshall 6100LE nails it all. When Boss introduced the GT-6 ads and magazines suggested a step forward. So I bought it. But whenever I tried to emulate a certain sound, the process with the GT-5 was quick and straight forward so I was always happy with the results. When I tried to get similar results even to the ones I already had programmed on my GT-5, I never got close enough with the GT-6. Even sounds with little effects complexity were surprisingly difficult to dial in on the GT-6 and quick and easy on the GT-5. I don't know how to put it but the GT-6 always sounds artificial. My guitar buddy in our Band had a GT-Pro and never got close to my sound quality. The noise / signal ratio might be a little better on a 24 bit machine. But as long as I tweak signal in all stages of the chain, this is not really an issue for me. Another issue was the missing reverse delay, that does things in the GT-5 I could not achieve on the GT-6.
@gearfacts

Good review! Though the GT-10 is definitely more "digital sounding" by itself, that USB port on the GT-10 allows me to interface with Amplitube emulation software and opens up hundreds of more sonic options (multiple amp sims, cabs, custom patches, mic selections/placements, lots more FXs, etc.) I just find some clean resident patches on the GT-10 and then tweak it with Amplitube to get the proper tone. Extremely versatile, though you do need a computer also.

Can you use the footswitches to engage amplitube effects? I'm sure you could run the guitar into an interface like iRig HD2 and run from the output of the interface into the effects loop. At that point you could engage Amplitube, however you have it set. But can you actuallly control amplitube with the unit?

Well it's not quite as simple as that ...All of these units have analog and digital components. Don't judge pedals on this comparison alone, digital is getting VERY good and analog sometimes has issues of its own. Well the delay is excellent and the distortions are all analog, but if those are the only two things you need then I'd go for a Boss ME-8B if you can find one. Still the GT-5 is regarded as a classic by many very well-informed guitarists, it won't disappoint you. Also consider the Line 6 POD XT, great distortions and absolutely exceptional delays. I bought a GT-5 brand new when they came out. Suggested retail on those was over a grand here in Canada. I think I picked mine up for about 800$. Built like tanks, (in Japan), analog effects... Sure, the emulators aren't as precise as todays digital copiers, but that hardly matters. If you don't mind tweaking parameters a bit, you'll have everything from sweet liquid bluesy clean tones to all-out face melting gain. Plus, you can pick one up nowadays for next to nothing. They have a bit of a following, so I'm sure if you're not happy with yours, you could easily flip it and break even.

Checked out a local band a few years ago. Two guitarists sharing the lead/rhythm roles. For once I wasn't getting ear fatigue because the genres were all over the place. After a while (the stage was quite busy), I spotted the familiar display of the Axe FX and started to wonder if this was the reason that they sounded so good. Had a chat with the owner during break and asked him how he liked the Axe and he said that he liked it but had buyer's remorse. He said he couldn't get anything better out of it than the other guy gets out of his Boss GT-5 🤣😂

Gearfacts - Seems like it, if it ain’t broke why fix it some say. Modern software programs are making these things look more neanderthal. Years ago I owned a tape delay echo chamber and it was brilliant Wem Copicat it was. Then they came out with the Melos and cassette style that brought with them their own problems. Digital is easier with no moving parts but somehow lacks the warmth of the earlier tape systems. I also used to own a Fuzz Box it was place in the guitar outlet and then a cable to the amp. If memory serves me correctly the name was the Little Imp. If you can confirm that would be great, for such a little box the effect was quite good.

I have owned the Boss GT10 for about 12 years. Its horrible. I dont think I have ever managed to create a chain of effects, I just tweak/use the presets. The lights as mentioned are way too bright, to a painful level. I just use it as a reverb unit for my synths now. It cant even do that very well as the "potts" to adjust the amount of reverb do not work very well (never gigged it - just home use only). i.e - turn it down and it moves reverb amount up - its broke. Even the looper is garbage - 38 seconds? So i purchased a Zoom G5N unit 12 months ago - wow what a difference. Within seconds I had created great chain effects - so user friendly. I love my Zoom unit. I recently decided to buy a Boss Katana mk2 100 watt amp - what a load of garbage......DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE. I now need to buy another amp to replace this junk. No more Boss produts for me. Or Korg haha.....PLEASE STOP WITH THE MENU DIVING.
