So this channel and probably Dave has proved many times that gear is just the tool and music is the aim. That is what I like about you Dave, the authenticity. Commercials will always be commercials tending to forget that the real thing is the production of music by any means. Solid state vs tube maps, super expensive vs cheap guitars, Strats vs LPs etc. etc. and many other stereotypes are just misleading. It's all about emotions, feelings and love about the music we play and try to convey to the others, that's why Dave's intros are so brilliant.

I've picked up a boss katana 50 mk2 just today, impressed with it more than the mk1. I only had it on the crunch setting with the blues driver boost on the .5w setting when I tried it in the shop. I like the fact it comes with more options than the mk1, glad I waited an extra week or two to get it.

Dave, I'm so glad you made this video! I have been thinking about getting a katana for a year or so...Originally I was going back and forth between buying the 50 or the 100. Couldn't make up my mind. Then when I saw the mkII released, I thought I would just get a new one. After watching this I will probably pick up a used MK1, or a new one (MK1) if they are still in stock online etc. Sounds WAY better to my ears, better clarity, and just sounded better overall! You are 100% correct, the new features don't matter if the original one sounds better! : )

Thanks for the good vibrations! Comparing gear is always a good idea. I remember when I listened the Fender Mustang V2 ampli, and I liked it a lot. When the new V3 Mustangs were reviewed here on YT compared to V2, still I liked the older version. And the Mustang Floor pedal, beyond the fact it is not as versatile as my Zoom G5n, is a very good piece of hardware.

Great comparison Dave, really clear and easy to hear how darker and less vibrant the mk2 is! I'd be fascenated to also hear a 2nd mk1, one with the very latest updates, just to see if darker tones were the way boss's programmers were heading before the mk2's release!?

Sounds to me like any shortcomings in sound on the MKII is a matter of EQ adjustment. Setting them the same isn't necessarily going to get the same sounds...adjust as needed.

I would agree. IMO the only way to test this is to dial the second amp exactly sound wise, not knob wise, and then compare. The effects knobs don't track the same way on these as well.

There is no real advantage to owning the MKII if you already have the MKI, especially if you have the GA-FC footswitch because the twin-knobs are not used if you use the external footswitch anyway (that was hard to get out) - I think they are the same core amps, MKII just has a few features that are handy but not critical. That was one hell of an intro piece Dave, really something special. MKI is definitely better here!

In your video, I preferred the MKI over the ii, but in person, I preferred the MKII over the MKI. The 1 had a very loose bottom whenever I played it and didn't take pedals well. The 2 sounded and felt better in person and took pedals better. It also has a much better low end to it. To each their own. It's ahrd to beat these amps for the price, that's for sure.

I agree with your Dave. My mk1 KTN100 has a lot less of a generic tone compared with the mk2. It seems they have adjusted the sound to sound ok in a music shop but made it bloom less in the process. My KTN100 gives a tone in proud to call my own and trying the mk2 seemed like a diluted tone.

Thanks for a thought provoking review and the super guitar work. I was on the verge of pulling the trigger on the MK1 head just before the MK2 was announced. Prudence whispered in my ear that it might be best to let the dust settle and listen to some video reviews and comparisons before deciding what now. I must say that introducing the volume imbalances into the 2 is incomprehensible. I have it from other reviewers that some of the alternates are voiced slightly differently. Perhaps that is a software glitch that will be dealt with on a firmware upgrade soon. And i agree totally that version 1 has superior sound. There are again several possible reasons that come to mind. Of course others have mentioned the new speaker vs the older broken in speaker on version 1. But again with even slight voicing changes, identical knob settings might not be ideal for transfer to version 2. A bit of tweaking might bring the newer model to life. It could be like buying a new pair of your favorite shoes and discovering that initially they aren't nearly as comfortable. Spending a bit of time with them and allowing break in time might solve the issue. But then again, who knows. I do appreciate the review and will definitely wait for the dust to settle and allow the choice to become clearer. This was to be my first foray in many years back into the digital realm of amps. I'll just stick with tubes for now and keep an eye on how things develop. Keep up the good work!
