to bypass all fx and talk: hold down the right pedal for 2 seconds at the end of the song (let's you scroll < > thru presets). store a blank (fx off) preset between each of your (fx on) presets.
@DHGagnon4 жыл бұрын
Or you could just tap the left pedal to turn off the fx entirely.

I have had the VE 20 and the Digitech Vocalist Live for many years. Here is my quick comparison/review; I use the VE as a studio vocal effect. I put it in dry/mono mode (the Digitech doesn´t have this option) and the main use is recording harmonies on a separate track while recording the moain vocal performance. You can do harmonies with plugins in the DAW but I like the Boss harmonies a little better usually. I use the Digitech pedal for live playing because it has a key adapt system that listens to either the ambient sound or the guitar input to know what key for the harmonies. You can also set the key manually on the Digtech Vocalist which is the only option on the Boss pedal (no live adapt). The Digitech pedal has fallen apart a bit, the plastic cover over the screen comes off and the LED screen inside is loose now and moves around but I have been stomping on it for years and it has taken a lot more abuse than the Boss pedal. However, the contruction of the Digitech pedal is NOT as robust as the build of the Boss pedal in general. Both sound pretty similar IMHO when it comes to the quality of the effects. The Digitech has something called the Gold Channel which is for universal settings like low cut, EQ, etc. that gives you a general sound no matter which preset you are on and which can be deactivated manuallly for special cases. The Boss does not have anything like this. The Boss VE has a combo xlr-1/4" input jack while the Digitech only has xlr input. It´s nice to have both just in case you don´t have the right cable. Both pedals have loopers which can be used like a guitar looper or as a sound check tool. The Digitech has an anti-feedback option which works OK but has its limits. I have compared the sound of vocals straight into the PA, through the pedal to the PA and through the pedal and a digital mixer to the PA and it seems that straight into the PA, no pedal no digital mixer, always sounds the best playing live. It could just be the effects or the digital to analogue conversion (twice when going through the digital mixer) that causes this loss of clarity in the sound. I am NOT a purist when it comes to tone so if I am noticing this then for you who are very picky about sound quality you might really be bothered by this coloring of the tone. With the Boss you have the dry signal and you can mix the effects output in parallel to taste which sounds better to me than changing the effects levels on the Digitech which is the only way to mix the dry vocal and the effects. If I remember correctly, both units cost me around 300€ new. They both have their strong and weak points but if I could have only one I would probably go with the Boss VE 20 because of the dry/effects output option and because of the quality of construction. So these are some of the things that you might want to take into consideration when deciding on a vocal pedal.

I did do a comparison of just Harmonies between these 2 pedals. If you think they sound "robotic" etc. that is part of the effect itself. The BOss VE20 Sounds more Synthetic or robotic than the Harmonies on the TC Helicon Voicelive Play.

I was hoping to find a Harmonizer/Effect pedal that will read guitar input and operate on batteries. Genderization of the harmonies would be a bonus. Don't need the goofy ass robot noises, (Not only) Boss should really look at and focus performers' practical needs. I have had several harmony boxes over the last couple of decades. I can see the the plusses and minuses of this box. I'd go with another unit.

There is the Tc Helicon voicelive acoustic (i think its called). It has the extra 1/4 input for the guitar to harmonize with. It does not take batteries is the downside! Not sure either if it uses the guitar signal as a source of harmonizing note/chord.

I think I almost mistakenly said something so edited itnouy. Basically if u have it set for Harmony On/Off via foot pedal control but want a different preset you have to turn the knob to change preset. You can of course disengage the harmony foot control so u can instead use the pedal to switch presets with your foot. Its one or the other which via foot pedal. Which is kind irritting if it is ment as a floor unit verus hand controlled.

Great vids! I'm trying to diagnose why the distortion effect is significantly lower in volume versus the primary setup. When I have the headphones on, the volume level matches when I "kick" the distortion on, but when connected live, it is barely discernible. I set the harmony pedal to control the on/off for the distortion. I'm running a mono signal via XLR to our mix which is connected to powered speakers. I'm curious if you've experienced something similar and know how to solve the issue. I've played with the "parts" levels and panned the effect to the L, but that hasn't fixed the issue. I've searched forums, etc. and haven't found a good solve. Any insight is appreciated. Otherwise, the pedal has been a great addition.
@newcastlemusicstudios2 жыл бұрын
I would guess its the effect is weakened quite a bit when you use the Mono xlr ouput. If you hear it normal in stereo headphones. Strange when you tried both sides yiu didnt get the desired effext. Maybe in settings there is a differentiatuin for stereo versus mono effects. I know there are levels. Also consider if you using a dynamic mic the effects always seem much weaker versus a condenser. Ill have a look at it tonight see if it the same on my unit.

Wel if you prefer to plug n your guitar and you want to directly improve the harmony via the plug in your voice may mix much better or easy to hear on the ear... you have to mic the ve 20 for that a day the auto pitch correction would likely mess up the guitar... When big performers go out live with an audio tech running a mixer board with FX including auto tune like tech.. they often still manage to sound horrendous. Dynamics means compression, so yes, there is. It would have been nice if the reviewer had read up on that and the pitch correction (which has soft, hard and two other settings not shown here). As they were the two things I was most interested in, I found that section of the review, which was a bit like suffering your average big store computer salesman who knows sod all about computers, quite annoying.

CAN YOU LOWER THAT REVERB THO. Some of these effects would be so much cooler if that reverb wasn't so heavy on all of them
@newcastlemusicstudios4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can have several types of reverb, hall 1, hall 2, plate, room, ambience, etc. You can use room reverb it's very light. Or turn the reverb completely off, same with delay you can adjust the time to decrease echo etc.

You sounded like you might loose your voice pretty quickly. Sing from the gut. If you can feel it in your throat it's just going to get worse. I'm sure you have heard this before, but if not... Well, there you go. I tried to be a vocal coach but never been able to gather clients or people who actually want coaching. Most people take it personally, lol.
@newcastlemusicstudios3 жыл бұрын
I dont take it personally. I know I am not much of a singer. I have tried my hand at singing off n on because I could never find a Singer for the Songs I have written. I can sing some stuff more gutterly as you put it, however I lose the ability to enunciate and overall hit the proper notes when i do sing in the proper fashion. Some Songs in Dmajor/Gmajor/Cmajor I can sing pretty normal and dont sound so horrible.... Unfortunetly I have always been drawn to writing and singing songs in the A minor or other minor keys and when I try n sing those my fairly high octave range drops pretty low as I have issues bending from one note to the next note. Everyday I practice is a small learning experience I just try to share these FX Pedal Box TOOLS, like the Boss VE20/TC Helicon with other who perhaps whom of which have a much better singing voice but just want to spice it up and add some FX. Thanks for watching!

hi.. there are no plugs for the guitar, so this device cannot auto harmonize?
@newcastlemusicstudios4 жыл бұрын
Correct. It has just one input and 2 ouputs. You could use a small mixer and run your vocals/guitar through that to one output then through the BOSS VE 20.
@j.j.10643 жыл бұрын
@@newcastlemusicstudios The Voicebox unit has two inputs and outputs one for the mic and the other for your instrument. Control is analogue and has a vocoder feature which senses the key that you are playing and automatically generates the appropriate harmony. I've owned both VE20 and Voicebox and in terms of user friendly interfaces there's no comparison. The VE20 does have pitch correct which purists argue is claiming credit on stage for someone else's work ie the developer. But that's another rabbit hole.

What dynamics do ?
@newcastlemusicstudios4 жыл бұрын
Dynamics affects how loud/quiet your voice will be. So Boss VE20 Dynamics with "Enhance" should make your vocals louder kind of like a compressor. In theory it should "even" out the Volume of your Vocals.

I owned one of these and for me it was Hell on a stick. It's great for beating tent pegs into the ground as long as you don't mind ruining the tent pegs. I can think of something better with two pedals that's far more useful. The instruction book is written by geeks who assume you have a PHD in electronics. It's operation is a plethora of digital menus and sub menus that will leave you feeling that you need the services of a therapist and certainly not needing a barber as their will be no hair on your head to pull out. The frustration will leave you placing the thing in the box and having to spend the immediate future nursing your buyers remorse. I would hope that the remaining stock could be used to build a very expensive colorful red brick wall. Not in my opinion the best Boss invention by a long chalk.

@@newcastlemusicstudios I bought the Voicebox. Which is totally analogue control and requires about 15 min twiddling before your up and running. It has a row of knobs just like an amp and sounds amazing. For me, less is more. User friendly interfaces are everything especially if you suffer mild dyslexia. Developers should spend time getting to know their customers.

I bought this pedal, the quality is not good enough to use on stage, the effects are robotic and take you out of tune if you have a decent voice. No good for a band, no sent and return, this pedal is an expensive toy that does not come close to some other Boss products. Anyone thinking about buying this then DON'T. Waste of money, Hyped up and overrated. .over priced, no power supply comes with the pedal, Absolute rubbish. I will be selling my pedal, two weeks old.

I clicked dislike on this video, NOT because of the VE20, but "Your" presentation of this product. From a first time user's prospective, you presented this product in an all over the place fashion lol. Ok, I know you just got it, but it would have helped if you had of "Learned" it a bit better Sir. Nonetheless, this machine is far more expansive than what you have shown in this video. Each preset, and further be tweaked in it's different settings. Let's take "Three Part Harmony," You have your voice, a third, and a fifth. Each part can be given it's own separate parameters, to fine tune it to exactly the way you want it to sound. Key of C for instance,, you are singing in C, the third which would be E, can have it's own setting/depth. Make that third should like a female, male, or whatever. Be a bit louder, harsher, more reverb, or whatever, and so forth. I use to own this machine, and HATE, TOTALLY HATE that I sold it after my PC broke. I'd actually like to see a REDO of this video, when and after you actually learn it, and take your time to FULLY show off the power of this machine. Tip on singing bro, breath, and don't whine, nor sing through your nose, for you sing Rock, so you should ROCK THAT.

Sure. I think you are talking about doing a 60 minute in depth tutorial/ or set of videos on functionality down to the most obscure level, that may not relate too many basic "punch in" users. Many people, from my experience want solid presets and that's what I tried mostly to present. I did make it clear at the end of the video, if you watched it all? that it takes time to fully grasp ALL the capabilities of the BOSS VE20. There are many other other reviews on this, lol, if you want to see "all over the place" click on a few of those :)

Probably your interface fam. If it’s on too high then the vocal will be distorted. But people have issues with the hissing idk. Don’t have one but I have hissing issues too. Make sure you’re in a quiet ass room. But yea turn the volume down on the interface. The hissing probably won’t go away though I have hissing all the time haha I record in a car though
