Actually they would have won the championship that year had Danny not destroyed the team with the Perk and Nate Robinson trade. The team had one of the top 3 records before that abysmal trade
@pebutts
@pebutts 3 жыл бұрын
Sure, they had a good record before the trade, but Perkins just wasn't the same guy after hurting his leg in the 2010 finals. He was having a tough time getting healthy and was going to be asking for big money in free agency after the season. The fact of the matter is that he was a good role player in the Celtics system who wasn't going to be worth the contract the Thunder were dumb enough to pay him. In fact, his deal was the biggest reason they couldn't afford to keep James Harden. The Celtics' biggest problem that year wasn't the defense, which is what Perk did well. The offense just wasn't good. In the playoffs, Boston held Miami 7 points below their season scoring average (from 102 ppg to 95 ppg), so their defense was plenty good enough to win. Unfortunately, Miami held them to 91 ppg, far below their season average of 96.5 ppg. They just didn't have anybody that could dependably score against the Heat defense. Honestly if Boston didn't have one of the great three point shooting series of all time (they shot 46%), their offense would have looked way worse. Perkins was a warrior and a great role player, but he wasn't changing that.
@2Good2BeTrue45
@2Good2BeTrue45 3 жыл бұрын
@@pebutts i hear you. Ut Perk fot the system of the Celtics PERFECTLY as the enforcer. It was clear to everyone that Perk wouldn't be re-signed by the C's but that was not necessary, as he would only be needed for that push to the finals and that Celtics team was more than enough to defeat the Mavericks. But once the C's lost their inside presence with Shaq breaking down as everybody knew and getting injured in the playoffs, with only Jermiane "garbage as hell" O'Neal having to be the starter (who also publicly threatened to go to Miami specifically if the C's traded him) we were screwed. Shaq would have been more than fine to be played in spurts while Perk was the starter when he came back. Also Rondo was not a good scorer at all and Nate was one if the biggest reasons why we had elite bench scoring and explosiveness so trading him away made no sense whatsoever. That trade destroyed the C's and still haunts Danny to this day whi h is why he rarely wants to sell the farm anymore
@pebutts
@pebutts 3 жыл бұрын
I understand your points, although Robinson just didn't work out for Boston. He shot only 40% from the field and didn't give you much in any other area. In the playoffs in 2010 he only averaged 4 points a game and didn't even play in 7 out of 24 games, so I disagree that he was a major factor for them. I can't blame Ainge for deciding to unload him. I agree that Perkins would have helped the team in the playoffs, but even if healthy (which it wasn't clear at the time he could be) he wouldn't have fixed the main problem, which was that the team's primary players were past their best. They couldn't score against Miami and Perkins, while solid, wasn't the force that they needed in that series. Jeff Green was a starter in Oklahoma City and looked like a potential star. He was only 24 and was averaging 14 a game on a team that featured Durant, Harden, and Westbrook. Plus he was a good defender. Ainge figured that in Boston's offense Green would be even better while giving them a player that could guard explosive wings like James and Wade. Unfortunately, he wasn't any better at guarding James and Wade than anybody else on the Celtics and wasn't able to integrate into the offense like they'd hoped. There was no way for Ainge to know about Green's aortic aneurysm that put him out of action the next season. His surgery and the year he had to take off really hurt his development and prevented him from becoming the star Ainge envisioned when they traded for him, though he did become a very solid pro. He's still playing in the league now and has averaged double digits ten separate years of his career.

As a huge Heat fan because of Shaq coming to Miami when I was a child I have to say him going to the Celtics was a trash move. The Heat had Joel Anthony as a starting center and Shaq doesn’t try to come back and help the Heat one time smh I’m always salty because of that.

Made the trek from Maine for this game. My first Celtics game since 1996. Shaq was a last minute decision and boy was he on this game.

I got to see him log a few minutes live against the Jazz. I was also excited to see Al Jefferson, too. Mission accomplished.
