And I take what I find, I don't want no more
It's just outside of your front door

...along with building all the ROCKMAN amplifiers, speaker cabinets, and guitar processor units that influenced some of the best musicians and bands on the planet (see Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Def Leppard etc.) Tom Scholz was way ahead of the times in the late 60's 70's and 80's with guitar sound and studio wizardry. Incredible production on these albums. like no other. Lead singer Brad Delp had an elite angelic tenor voice that floored everyone. Only a few could match his ability to reach the high-rafter notes and stay in perfect pitch. All vocals (including background and beautiful harmonies) were done by this amazing talented soul. Scholz and Delp were the perfect combination when it came to creating this truly inspired music together...

I could not believe it - but it's true. Boston is not in there! They put out the greatest 1st album of all time, with cuts still in heavy rotation, but no hall of fame? Look, every body loves Dolly Parton - she is a genius performer, a leader and a good person - but she's no rocker - but she's in the Hall of Fame (over her very principled objections - like I said, she's a good person.)

Minor nitpick: about the only thing Tom Scholz didn't do was the vocals. But that was probably a good thing -- there will never be another Brad Delp. Nobody before or since has had the ability to maintain full power (i.e., without going falsetto) as high as Brad Delp could. Even Freddie Mercury couldn't go that high at full power.

And there were no synthesizers. When you listen to it with that in mind, you begin to get the gist of the massive amount of detail Tom Scholz was implementing in his little basement in Watertown, Mass, to get this album done, and close to perfect as possible.. Incredible amount of work. This album is a timeless masterpiece.

What's the problem with synthesizers? There's really not much of a difference between an analog synthesizer and a Hammond organ. One uses an oscillator to produce the sound and the other a "tone generator".

We lived through the greatest age of music, we had everything without knowing music was dying. Plus we could fit myself and a bunch of my sisters in it with our long 70s hair, parted down the middle, and looking hot lol! We would have probably challenged you to race, and, undoubtedly lost, but we would have had great fun doing it. Those were such innocent days. Be glad you didn't.. Saw them at Cobo hall in Detroit .. Amazing songs, amazing talent, amazing ( for the time era) sound.. Unfortunately, basically nada for stage presence. Seriously.. the quietest concert ( for crowd response) that I'd ever attended, and I've seen most of the big name 70s' and 80s' acts. I can vividly remember going from Windsor Ontario, over to Detroit, to buy the Album, because it was available there first. Everyone came over to my place, and we played it repeatedly on my stereo. Knew I had to see them in concert. Living in Windsor. Ontario... Pre 911.. It was just a couple of bucks and a ten minute walk from the tunnel bus to Cobo Hall. There's a class of musicians called "studio musicians". Basically, these are musicians who can play anything! And, make it sound amazing!! Boston was like that. They were tight, sounded great, but with the hottest album of the time... They couldn't get Cobo hall off it's collective asses.. I've seem way less talented musicians just 'effin rock the venue, with balls, chutzpah, stage presence.... whatever you wanna call it.. Boston couldn't pull it off.. Not by a long shot. Don't get me wrong.. In an era before "auto tune", and lip syncing, and recorded bits.. They proved that they could cut it live.. They just couldn't get the place off it's collective ass. Not to take away from their musical talent... not at all.. Just... They failed to engage the audience. On the side of my Marshall, there's a sign that only I can see on stage.. It says .." Technical perfection isn't important, passion is.. I need to make you believe" Boston.. in concert, couldn't make anyone "believe".. Maybe they got better at it as the tour went on. But, that was my first hand take on it at Cobo Hall. Underrated playing? For sure.. The double leads on "Hitch a Ride", send chills down my spine to this day.

@@charles09361 Interesting, thanks for sharing! I know exactly what you mean. Only 30 but sometimes there have been shows I saw live and beforehand didn't even care for the music but the band MADE me ;). Energy is everything with live performances. You gotta woo the audience or don't even bother doing live shows.

@@steveanderson7536 I am constantly surprised by the number of people who are not able to hear the difference in the tone, technique, phrasing and legato when Barry is playing. It is sad that Barry rarely gets credit for what he did on this record. Too many people assume that Tom played all of the instrument tracks on this record due to the way that Tom has obfuscated the facts about who did what on this record and how this record came to be.

@@neechee5150 100% accurate. Also I saw a recent video from Rick Beato where he diagnosed this song. He specifically mentioned that the guitar solo was an example of how underrated Tom Scholz was. Umm, okay lol. No... it's an example of how unappreciated and underrated and unknown Barry was.

As a 51yr old man, this was just ever so slightly beyond my time. Thankfully when I found my parents records in the mid 80s I found this... rocking so hard... better than the heavy metal bands so popular at the time, AC/DC, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeath and all the rest.. and This song speaks more and more to me as the older I get. Different meanings at different stages in my life. As I think about my girl, literally sitting just outside the front door. Smokin. Bless you all. What a trippy world we all share here in this thing called life.

I'm 52 but was blessed with 2 older brothers so I got introduced to classics like this at a young age. My oldest brother was a dead head and I remember my other brother locking himself in his room for days listening to "The Wall" when it released. Seven years later I would lock myself in his room and listen to his albums while he was at work. Of course I also listened to Maiden, Metallica etc with my friends. Good times.

I was in high school and college in the 70's and grew up just outside of Boston. I saw Boston and Aerosmith multiple times, great shows every single time. Was also lucky enough to see The Rolling Stones when they played at a small bar called Sir Morgan's Cove in Worcester MA in 1981.

This album blows me away every time. Im into heavier music, deftones, metallica, harms way etc etc but without these classic rock influences none of it would be here. The albums of the 60s, 70s and 80s put out but classic rock bands were absolutely mint and always will be. Timeless!!

Boston, Foreigner and Queen were the three rock bands that I listened to incessantly during my college years in the late 1970s. I got to see Queen @ MSG in New York, along with The Who and Elton John on other occasions. I regret that I didn't get to see Boston, but I think that the above-listed bands that I did see in concert were pretty good, especially The Who. The current generation can only see these great bands on tape on PBS. Better late than never.
