All thriller, no filler album and so happy to see it recognized as such. Thank you.

That album was 7 years in the making....Tom Scholz did in fact record & mix the whole thing in his spare time, he played all the keys, bass, and most of the guitars, had another friend play drums, and of course Brad Delp...who by the way did ALL the vocals, every lead, every harmony. 46 years later it's still in the top 3 debut albums of all time. A masterpiece

@daniellloret3769 There is so much Boston/Scholz urban legend BS out there. All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. The high end mic pres, eq's, compressors and plate reverbs that Boylan used on Brads voice are part of the reason why Brads voice sounds so good on this record. The entire song Let Me Take You Home was recorded in its entirety by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Toms does not play bass on every song. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home. Toms long time friend Jim Masdea played drums on the demo tape that was submitted to Epic and producer John Boylan. However, Sib plays the drums on every song except one on the record. The record was mixed at Westlake studios on thier then new and top of the line API conosole and their 3M 24 track tape machines. The mixing was done by producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom. According to Boylan it was quite the circus and tug of war mixing with Tom because he kept pushing the electrc guitars and cymbal so hard that Boylan and Dewey had to try to keep up and in the process the console was pushed into "manual compression"
@joshgrant-ti4xk

@@neechee5150 the only thing done outside of the studio was professionally mixing it. Tom Scholz played at least 90% of the guitars, bass and keys himself.

@neechee5150 10 күн бұрын
@@joshgrant-ti4xk said, "the only thing done outside of the studio was professionally mixing [the Boston debut record] it" If you are trying to say that the only thing that was done to the Boston debut record outside of Toms studio was that it was mixed at Westlake studios, you are WRONG. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was in fact recorded at The Record Plant LA by the band as pictured on the back of the record, This is a documented, legal and corroborated fact that Tom has NEVER denied. It is also fact that ALL of Brads vocals sans the vocals on Let Met Take You Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. Then if you want to get technical this record was mastered by Wally Traugott at Capital Studios Your 90% statistic is suspect at best. Why? Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on three songs: Foreplay, Long Time and Let Me Take You Home. Tom was forced to admit this as fact under oath in legal documents in the lawsuits between Tom and Barry. Barry also plays all of the lead guitar solos on Long Time as well as the huge power chords in Long Time. In addition, Barry also plays lead and slide guitars on Let Me Take You Home. Given that there are only 8 songs on the record and given that Barry plays all of the guitars on Let Me Take You Home and given how much Barry plays on Foreplay and Long Time it is mathematically impossible for your 90% claim to be true. Your 90% claim is 100% fiction.

@@joshgrant-ti4xk I stated documented facts that Tom and producer John Boylan have STATED AS FACT AND TRUTH or that Tom was FORCED TO ADMIT AS TRUTH UNDER OATH in legal proceedings between he and Barry. I have stated FACTS as documented in the liner notes of EVERY copy of the debut record that has ever been sold. I stated facts that Tom listed in the liner notes of the POST LITIGATION 2006 Scholz (not Sony) remaster of the debut Boston record, and this was Toms pet project from the get go and other than Epic/Sony not letting Tom have the original master, Tom had COMPLETE CONTROL over this remaster. I can document as FACT every one of my claims. I issue you a challenge to document your claims and to refute what i have said. Opinions that are not supported by facts and corroborated evidenced and testimony are FICTION. Tom has purposely obfuscated and left out many key details of who did what on this record and Tom in his usual titanic ego self aggrandizing fashion has been less than honest and transparent and he as minimized the contributions of others to this record. This is not a matter of agreeing to disagree this is a matter about what is truth and fact. I can defend everyone of my claims. Can you?

One of the most beautiful guitar solos ever written imho. Sure, people learn how to play guitar and can imitate these sounds, but the real genius is not necessarily in the playing but rather in the creation of the sound and putting the notes together. That's where the great rock 'n roll guitarists separate themselves.

I get chills every time I hear this tune. The outro overlapping/dueling guitars are so powerful yet melodic, and rocking at the same time. Now, listen to all the other songs from the debut album especially Peace of Mind, Smokin' and Rock N Roll Band. The title track from the second album, Don't Look Back, features the classic Boston sound.

BOSTON's Third Stage (their comeback, about a decade after this debut) came CLOSE to the success of this album and is their last excellent album. The sophomore release [Don't Look Back -even, given that: a lot of people seem to love it (or claim to, anyway) and rate it quite highly, the issue with that is THIS: It's inaccurate and untrue. As a listener: you, quickly recognize the fact that it is an attempt at retreading THIS album... but, with weaker, more "cobbled together" songs. Not as well-constructed and too "just there" and/or similar (to everything you already have, by them!). ...they were, still, exploiting the demos they recorded in the early '70s (for e.g. : 'Don't Be Afraid" was originally a song called "Love" ...from circa 1973-1974). Nothing wrong, inherently, with that, but: Don't Look Back, while "a fine recording" and more than "just listenable" ...IS a retread and is (in comparison) markedly weaker and less interesting than their debut. ...Having 8 years (due to: lawsuits, psychological and social bullshit (in Tom's head) and, also: tapes which aged-out and began sticking together (so: "technical difficulties"-to say the least!) to, uhmmm... "polish a project," does give you some more opportunity to: write new stuff, arrange stuff "on the books" better and/or: just cull or alter things you would have put out, if you had, just, done that years earlier (around the time first created it ....or so....). >>>Anyhow: I.M.O.: the overall quality of: Third Stage is their second best (behind the debut)( [and the tour was good, too]. ...Nut Scholz had kicked people out of the band (although: he had TOLD them he was 'taking a break' from Boston and could "...do solo projects, or whatever," while he was doing that...but, then, decided to get pissed-off at them when they DID do that the interim ('cause, obviously: control freak is, unnecessarily, a fucking douchebag.,-If you're not writing guitar or organ parts, I don't wanna hear sh*!t from you, Scholz!). ...anyhow....: Yes: Check-Out Third Stage ["Cool The Engines"; "We're Ready' (or, maybe: the 'album-flow-segue': "We're Ready"/"The Launch"/"Cool The Engines"] "Can't'cha Say (You Believe In Me)" and "Hollyann" are must-listens from 3rd Stage] (Tracks you would want to cove, from: "Don't Look back, IF you are going to bother with that album (It isn't a necessity): "Don't Be Afraid"; "Used To Bad News": "Feelin' Satisfied" ...🤷🤷 ...maybe "Party"(??)...)

The story behind the makin of Bonston's first album is one of legend. Created by Tom Scholz and MIT graduate engineer, he built the studio in his rented basement and recorded all the tracks himself. He mastered the art of layering sounds that build to form a complete unique song. It helps that Brad Delp became the lead vocal who is of unmatched range. There is a reason this album is the best selling of all time for a rock band debut.

Cheers, and thanks for all you do! ps~Boston's debut album and ELO's best album, A New World Record (which includes, "Tightrope") came out the same week at the end of the summer of '76. Imagine going to the record shop and buying those two iconic LPs on the same day during their first week on the shelves! lol 'Cuz that's what I, and so many other kids, did. Those two records bumped the 8-month old, Frampton Comes Alive, off the turntable, and split time dominating our stereos until Christmas when we all got the new Eagles record, Hotel California. Another iconic song from the Greatest hits ever from Boston. The vocals and instruments complement each other. Very little Bands Carry that iconic vibe throughout the bands existence. The 1970's and 1980's carry that Great sound and vibe, which a lot of bands lack. One of the Greatest Hits from one of the Greatest Bands in the World. RIP Brad and the rest who have past on from the Greatest Bands of all times. The vocals and songs one never gets tired of hearing. If one watches the videos of Boston, the Bass player seems to be jamming to his own tune. Rock On Boston 🤟🤘🤙👊✊

Born and raised in sleepy northern Maine, I always wondered if I was going to have to hitch a ride all the way to San Francisco California as a teenager. It seemed like a new world and so far away! Now I live here forever! Always by the way of BOSTON.

This was such a phenomenal album. I love this song and it's rather bittersweet for me - many of the people that I hung around with at that time have passed away and it's not even like they were old. Thank you for visiting this one.

Make no mistake about it - and I've experienced it personally. There are young people coming up in the world, technically savvy, calm, focused, family oriented, God-fearing, ambitious, and absolutely ass kicking. It gives me hope.

You mentioned the organ. When I saw this band in concert, they had a giant silkscreen of a pipe organ as their backdrop. When the organ played it would light up. Everyone went crazy. It was pretty cool.

Tom Scholz said this about Brad Delp in a Rolling Stone interview: Rolling Stone - "What qualities did his voice have that made him such a perfect vocalist for your music? " Tom Scholz: "He didn't warm up; he just listened to the prerecorded instrument track once. Then he started to sing. I don't know if it took two seconds or three, but before he finished singing the first line I knew that some guardian angel had just delivered to me one of the best vocalists ever to step up to a microphone! Then he kept going and I realized he wasn't just one of the best, he was amazing! High notes I hadn't heard before followed by harmonies, and overdubbed exact duplicate layered tracks, all with ease, all with emotion and yet all technically precise.” By Rolling Stone magazine-2007

I was 16 when this album arrived It was in every car and every home I saw Boston at San Francisco’s winterland arena in 77. I remember the show as perfect on every level and every note I had listened to that album so much I knew it backwards and forward At winterland the ovation was so immense and they had no more songs they played more than a feeling for a second time

You were asking if they matched this album? No, they didn't, but they nearly did. Don't look Back from the second album and Man I'll Never Be come very close. Possibly slightly over produced, but still fabulous.

I pray you guys did some research on Boston...this was basically done in One guys basement, he played all the instruments, well, 95%...but Brad Delp on vocals made it perfect! I was blessed to actualyl see their first tour in Jacksonville , Fl..., the things we take for granted....I will never forget

Love your reaction, wow, 1976 I was 28yo. (I'm 73 years young, and still have guitars I bought new in 1964, Martin, Gibson, Fenders) and when I first heard this album, (and you MUST listen to the entire album), I knew it would be in the R&R HOF !! This album was entirely the idea and work of one man. Tom Scholz, and MIT grad in Electrical Engineering, who quit his job at Polaroid, built his own brand of guitar electronics ("Rockman", I still have a vast array of Rockman units on my Rig to this day, cause you can't sound like BOSTON without, a Rockman "Sustainer") and single-handed played all instruments and recorded this in his basement - not a studio. (his BASEMENT) He did get Brad Delp's help on the vocals (another genius idea) - but all the rest was Scholz. He didn't pull a band together until after the album came out and he realized he needed to start touring. He is a freaking genius !! His interview is on The Tube, right now. So when you get your guitar START PLAYING and don't give up on it !! Play from your heart, you'll do fine !! Keep up the good work.

@brucecronin6396 Tom's BS and masters degree from MIT are in mechanical engineering. Brad had been singing on Toms demos and playing in bands with Tom for years before this was made. Brad sang on the demo that was submitted to Epic and to producer John Boylan and that is the demo that helped get Brad and Tom signed by Epic Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and the record is far better for that fact. Sib plays drums on all tracks except Rock and Roll Band and Jim Masdea, Toms long time friend, plays drums on that song. Tom's drumming on later Boston records leaves a great deal to be desired and that is putting it lightly. Tom's drumming has no groove, is sloppy and it is very very basic. Tom should have hired someone like Vinnie Coluita to play drums on those records instead of playing drums himself. There is no drum part that Tom could write that Vinnie could not play masterfully and there is no beat or groove maniputoin that Tom could conceive of that Vinney could not do and do it better than Tom wrote it.

All vocals are by Brad Delp including backups. Tom Scholz recorded this album in the basement of his home on equipment he built to get the sounds he wanted. There was no “Boston” band till Tom got a recording contract.
