Since the inception of Rob Has a Podcast, listeners have wondered if Boston Rob would ever appear on the show... wonder no more. Boston Rob Mariano from Survivor Marquesas, Survivor All-Stars, Survivor Heroes vs. Villains and the season that made him a winner, Survivor Redemption Island joins Rob Cesternino is the most extensive interview of Boston Rob's Survivor career.
Rob Cesternino starts by talking with Boston Rob about Survivor Philippines and his take on whether he likes the three tribe format of the game. Boston Rob has played many different variations of the game, including Survivor All-Stars where there were also three tribes. Rob thinks it was a mistake for the Kalabaw tribe not to vote out Denise Stapley this week when they had the chance. Rob C. asks how come Boston Rob didn't vote out Jenna Lewis and Rupert Boneham on Survivor All-Stars when they were in a similar position and Boston Rob explained his thinking from that game.
Rob C. brought up the medical evacuation of Dana Lambert from the game this week and how that compared to Boston Rob from Survivor Heroes vs. Villains the famous case of Crybaby-itis. Rob says that it's a real thing that got brought on from severe dehydration, much like what happened to Russell Swan on Survivor Samoa. Boston Rob also discusses knowing Mike Skupin from charity events that the older players used to attend back in the day. Rob is excited for Skupin to return to the show for this season. Boston Rob also likes Jeff Kent but may be rooting for him more if he had ever played for the Boston Red Sox.
Eventually, Rob begins asking Boston Rob many of the questions that came from the Facebook Fan Page spanning across a number of different seasons of the show. Boston Rob discusses many of the famous moments from his Survivor playing career including:
- What were his plans for Survivor Heroes vs. Villains had Tyson decided not to switch his vote. What could Rob have done differently to change his fate in the game?
- His thoughts on his decision to vote out Hunter Ellis early on in Survivor Marquesas. Why did he decide to take out Hunter and what did he learn about the game?
- What does Rob think now about his decision to not save Lex on Survivor All-Stars after Lex didn't vote Amber Brkich out of the game. What does Rob wish he could change about how that whole situation was handled?
- How did Boston Rob end up working so closely with Phillip Sheppard during Survivor Redemption Island?
- Which of his seasons had the toughest weather conditions?
- Would Boston Rob be open to possibly replacing Jeff Probst if Jeff decided he didn't want to host Survivor any more?

@@mikejohnson001995 You make it sound like Russell overcame that advantage all by himself. The Eric boot he had nothing to do with, that was all Galu being stupid or Natalie depending who you ask. Without that Foa Foa has no chance. His one huge play was playing the idol that sent Kelly home. Shambo flipping at that point, well that wasn't that hard, Galu had treated her like garbage, especialy Laura who was the Galu leader and hated Shambo.

I agree, Rob's fourth game was very far from perfect, if he made those same moves on a different playing field he really wouldn't have won, Rob really is a hard player for me to talk about, he is one of few players to fail to make the jury 2x, but is few to make it to the end 2x, Many people have him very low on their winner list or very high, I personally have him 8th after having used statistics... So many factors come into his gameplay.

I keep listening to this podcast episode every so often through the years - it was legendary for many reasons (humor, insight, etc.) . 1:04:00 The challenge mentioned by Boston Rob is my favorite survivor moment- say what you want about the Redemption Island cast, (mistakes by Andrea in particular), and the old school Survivor group of baffoons given to Russell, but he was playing a perfect game at that point, and winning THAT challenge sealed it, and the editors even kept in Rob saying that it was a “challenge for a million dollars”. He was brilliant in final tribal too, but he was always going to win it if he got there, and I love rewatching the moment. Thanks Rob.

There's a lot of factors that go into it. A lot of the people who came back only came back because it was all Winners. Plus they probably paid them a lot to get on the season.

All definitely valid points! And I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm pretty biased on the opinion... Since All-Stars really was the season that hooked me to the series (even to this day). Only point I would argue is that I think taking Jenna would of been a huge mistake. There was so much bad blood on the jury, it would of been ridiculous to risk losing the money AND the girl at the end. But stats aside, my personal opinion is that this guy has the best personality suited for the game.

Well, I completely say that Rob isn't the greatest player of all time, but he's one of the greatest. Idk what happened in Marquesas (I didn't watch that season), but he was amazing in All-Stars. As we all know, luck is a good chunk of the game, and luck sided with Russel on HvV because Tyson was stupid enough to switch his vote, which got him AND Rob out. In RI, well, can't argue with you on that one. lol.

Rob loses a jury vote to everyone on RI but Philip and Natalie, and Phillip and Natalie are absolutely pathetic players and unlikeable people to boot, probably the two biggest goats ever. Plus that it was a terrible quality newbie cast against a 4th timer. IMO pretty easy to argue against RI to be honest. Not that he deserved to win, which he did, but the quality of the win is another matter.

26:12. 32 tribal councils? Let's see. Boston rob was in 5 in Marquesas, 9 in All Stars, 3 in Heroes Vs. Villians, and 13 in Redemption Island. That's 30....wow. I guess the last two could count as when they WATCHED the tribal council in HvsV where James got voted out, and counting the tribal council where two guys got voted out in RI as two instead of one. That would make 32. Jeez....

IDK, Mariano, seems to me the fact that your game evolved so much, that you learned to adapt, figure all the scenarios, and choose what's best for everyone, indicates to me that you're flexible enough to be a presidential candidate. Who could you say knows this game better inside and out? Really though... I even hate to admit it but I can't think of a single name. BR is the best player at being able to control his own fate in the game. If things go his way anyway. That's my argument... Take it for what it is. Why do you think he is overrated?

How did Rob control his own fate in the game? Lets look at his lone winning game for instance. Had Grant not dominated the early challenges, Ometepe hits the numbers 9 to 3 down in the merge, and are Pagoned off instead of Zapatera. Had Amber or Matt switched at the merge as they would have if either had half a brain, he was toast and would have been one of the first jury members. Had Ashley not saved his ass by winning F5 immunity Grant wins the game. Had Andrea not come back from Redemption Island instead of Matt or Mike, Matt or Mike win the game. Had Ashley won the F4 immunity which she lost by a split second to Boston Blob, she wins the game, either by voting Rob out, or beating him in a jury vote regardless. His fate was largely dependent on others mistakes, not being a split second faster somewhere, or in some cases others bailing him out from his own mistakes. Not to mention if anyone but Natalie or Phillip reach the end he loses hands down. Even his lover Cesternino with his ridiculous mancrush on Boston Blob as this ass kissing interview proves would probably admit that. All Stars is similar. If Lex isnt an idiot and keeps Jerri instead of Amber, he is one of the first jury members, and others had many easy openings to take Rob or Amber out. And mostly didnt due to Rob being one of the biggest goats in the whole game, just like he was on Redemption Island. He is no Kim Spradlin, Tony Vlachos, Tom Westman, in control that is for sure. He is basically a poorer version of Brian Heidik when you think about it.

@@gqprince2 No he wanted to bring Grant to the Final 4 which is even dumber, since Grant is even more likely to beat Rob in a jury vote than Ashley is, and more likely to win final immunity, and more likely to be willing to outright boot Rob and take Phillip and Natalie for the easy 9-0-0 win than Ashley would. Ashley saved him by winning F5 immunity. And if Rob didn't want Andrea to come back he is really dumb considering Matt, Mike, Grant were all more threatening this season than Andrea was. So that is hardly a testemant to his game either.

I disagree. I think Rob would have beat Jenna L. by a 4-3 vote. But, I think you're right. I think he took Amber to the end cuz he loved her and didnt wanna risk losing her. But, as far as him having the best personality to play the game, I think Richard Hatch, Brian Heidik, Yul Kwon, Todd Herzog, Parvati Shallow and Kim Spradlin were much better players and winners than Rob. But, at least you are being reasonable about it. Unlike most people I encounter on here. Lol!

Rob would not have beaten Jenna. Alicia, Tom, Lex would be locked votes for Jenna. Rupert very likely votes Jenna, she was his closest ally all game. He almost voted Amber over Rob, so for sure votes Jenna over him. Jenna has already won and she has a good shot at Kathy's vote, Kathy was bitter towards and hated Rob by the end but was even more bitter towards Amber since she had replaced her old haggy mommy figure in his heart and groin with a younger hotter chick. Jenna would beat him 5-2 or 4-3. He had a better shot of beating Amber than of beating Jenna, and Jenna would have beaten both Rob and Amber. Rob and Amber were the 2 biggest goats of that season, the fact even Jenna would have beaten both proves that.

It is wierd he would complain about Lex not being his friend 8 years after the fact. Not everyone is required to be his friend, or is he so special he thinks he is god. He says Lex needs to just get over it, but Rob M is the one who needs to get over someone not interested in his friendship anymore after 8 years, now probably 11. Bringing up Grant not wanting to be his friend is stupid too, when he wasnt even asked by Rob C about Grant, yet randomly throws it in a whiny "waaah Grant wont talk to me anymore since I voted him out, then made fun of him further when he was upset about it" rant anyway. It should be clear by then neither guy wants to be friends with him anymore, which is perfectly their right and they wouldnt even need a good reason or any reason if they didnt want to.'w

I think Grant would be cool in real life but on the show he was boring or atleast he was edited as it. I am glad he didnt reach the end since he would have won for sure vs anyone but Mike probably, and he would have been a super boring winner, even if he was a pretty good player. I also was dissapointed to see how he nixed his friendship with Rob.

Yes Phillip is another he faked a friendship with, although he carries it out post game to the press just to make himself look a good guy. The only people he cared about one bit in his 2 final seasons are Amber and maybe to a really tiny extent Natalie T. (not really, he was mostly just using her due to being a huge goat, and a braindead little shit who would do everything he said, but maybe he likes her just a little). Everyone else those 2 seasons combined he couldnt give a shit about as a person or friend, never did, and any claims about friendship this or that, is nothing more than lieing, attention seeking, and painting himself as some sort of sympathetic victim, lol!

Yeah right bro! The first time he played he didn't even make it to the jury. The second time he stupidly took Amber to the end with him instead of Jenna L. which would have ensured his victory. The third time around, he got schooled by Russell(whether you Rob-lovers wanna admit or not)! And the 4th time around he only won cuz he was playin with a bunch of dipshit rookies who(obviously) had no clue what they were doin. To say that a guy who only won after the 4th try is the best player is nuts!

Yes Rob fanboys put Heroes vs Villians and his ass kicking by Russell (Russell the most overrated Survivor of all time, how embarassing) down to Tyson. When in fact Rob still had a 5-3 edge in numbers and Russell stole Coach and Jerri from him. Russell did kick his ass in the pre merge of that season, and considering Russell is one of the worst Survivor players in history, that was a very low moment for Rob.

@@phillipphillps9719 Russell isn't one of the worst c'mon now. I think they're both good btw before i explain. First of all Russell is one of the few revolutionaries of the game, finding the idol with no clues. And his record is only slightly worse than Boston Robs. 4 games: 2 early boots 2 finalists. Whereas Rob has 2 early boots and 2 finals with a win.

B Rob is so overrated is ridiculous. to say that he is the greatest player of all time makes me sick. I mean he is the greatest because of the fact that he returned for 4 times. that's the ONLY reason why i can see he is "the greatest". he is the kind of player that needed 4 times... FOUR times to seal the deal and win against a bunch of newbies who probably havent even watched the show before because most of them were recruits.

You can argue that he won on his second season. Amber took the million because she ruffled less feathers. He took her to the end. Completely dominated in All-Stars and Redemption Island. And if Coach wasn't such a coward, he would've gotten Russell out of there in Heroes vs Villains and dominated in that game too. So, there you have it.

Valupatitta Yew I agree a bit, He was very average in his first season. but he should have won All-Stars. And if Tyson didn’t pull the dumbest move in HvsV he was in great shape to win that game. His final season, his only actual win was a complete set up for him.

@@Zaiqahal He wouldnt have even been on Redemption Island if he won All Stars. It ended up much better off for him the way it worked out which makes it even funnier some Rob fans whine abou the All Stars results.

@@bobbythebrainii2118 If he wins either Heroes vs Villians or All Stars there is no Redemption Island, atleast not with Rob on it. Which actually would be a blessing given how godawful that season was. If he really was planning to bring Sandra to the end of Heroes vs Vililans he doesnt win anyway though. The jury was stacked in her favor given who is likely on it.
