When we moved to the US from South Africa, we lived in the Greater Boston Area for 7 years. Getting your bearings in Boston takes a bit. It’s wicked expensive if you are coming over from South Africa with a really tough exchange rate. But once you get your feet under you, it’s a terrific city. The two trails you did are fascinating if you are interested in history. Food is good, but it is mostly a seafood city. We loved our 7 years there, although the winters are pretty crappy. The walk around the Charles River, the Hatsch Shell, Beacon Hill, and Faneuil Hall are all must-sees. It’s a really interesting place to visit but I really think understand something of it’s history to truly appreciate what an amazing city it really is.

Harriet and I are former Bostonians. Harriet was a former tour guide and enjoyed taking tourists on free Walking Tours. Winter is not the best time to visit Boston. The warmer months are much more pleasant. There are Historical Tours in and outside the city, Duck Tour of the Charles River and downtown with interesting characters doing the tour. The Restaurants are better outside the city and less expensive. You can take a Duck Tour which is half boat, half bus. It takes you all over the city without the walk. Nevertheless, I hope you had a good time visiting family. Sending you lots of love and kisses. 💖💖💖 Harriet, Jim and Yuki. Richmond, Va.

Lobster is very expensive in the US and the price fluctuates constantly. A 6 oz lobster roll in NYC is $34 so what you got is roughly what you pay for at the market price, not unusual at all. It's not one of those typical super size items in the US, it's definitely more of an indulgence and luxury.

My name was so closed to be chosen for posting to Boston in 2005 n to New York in 2008, however, luck wasn't on my side, instead I was offered posting to Mumbai in 2008. D MIDA european centres were my cup of tea for posting, again, it wasn't my luck.

I spent appreciable time in both the Boston area and the NYC area. Boston is "The City" for the New England states. But outside of the New England region, Boston has relatively little influence on the national psyche. NYC (and probably L.A.) are the U.S. world cities. I would characterize Boston as a "large town" and not a world city as NYC - as you can walk through literally all of the tourist attractions in Boston in one day, which would take at least ~1 week for NYC. Boston is important for U.S. history (the events leading up to War of Independence) and is known for academics and the high-brow arts like the symphony, but it's not the financial/publishing/media/fashion/business-HQ/etc. world capital that NYC is.

Boston has two of the world's preeminent universities. New York has mattress girl, Wall Street con artists and Entertainment narcissists. Boston saves lives, New York destroys souls. That is nothing to tout.

It is also not filthy, doesn't stink of pot and has no riots. It also has a population full of people motivated to improve the world by making breakthroughs in the health sciences and technology. Boston is for families. New York is for lost souls.

To sum it up, I'd say Boston is a nice city. Just right in the middle... Not much wrong with it but nothing super special apart from some history and yeah more history. It's a city that is stuck in the past and keeps living off tthe old glory. We haven't really attempted to do anything great in recent years (tourism-wise) and so it's kind of boring unless you're a history buff

Those trolley buses sell all day passes and you can pick them up all around the city instead of taking the trains. The drivers are tour guides and will point out historical places, good restaurants, shopping and night life. The city comes alive in the summer. There are free concerts on the Charles River. The greenway, which you were walking by when you almost missed your train, is full of activities in the Summer. There are harbor dinner cruises, whale watch cruises and the Codzilla speedboat harbor tours.. Next time go into the public library. It's beautiful and the ceilings were painted by John Singer Sargent. The Museum of Fine Art is worth a trp. They have a large collection of well known impressionists too. Lobster prices went sky high because the government stepped in and limited the number each person can catch to prevent total depletion because of over fishing from worldwide demand. So, lobster sandwiches shrunk a bit. Next time you should definitely try the clam chowder. My friends from Italy thought it sounded disgusting until I brought them to Legal Seafood and they tasted mine. They all ended up ordering their own and it is always on their itinerary whenever they come to Boston.

LMFAO haha Born and raised here and let me tell you... Don't visit Boston in the cold months! It's horrible and so boring! Visting in the warmer months though, it's nice but unless you're here for the museums or the academics, there's really not much going on. I would reccomend you go to Cape Cod or even the islands around Boston. Actual Boston proper though doesn't have much sadly

Boston was established by the Puritans and they never really left. Boston is not for young adult tourists without kids looking for fun like NYC, L.A or Vegas. What Boston is, and this your family might be able to explain to you, is one of the best cities in the entire world to raise a family. It is packed with American history, two of the world's greatest universities and influential Christian churches that watch out for the well being of teenagers. This makes it the safest of all large U.S cities. Whereas NYC and LA are about fame and greed, Boston is about innovation and human. Yes, that's kind of boring, but in the end if you're looking for a place to live a life and not just visit, its the place. Do not visit the city in the dead of winter, its extremely cold and windy and not at all good for walking then. Travel to Boston when you have children either in the summer if you like sailing (some of the best on the planet is found between Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard) and beaches or in the fall if you like cooler weather and fall foliage.
