A quick video showing what i did to replace the rear springs on my 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI. Sorry i didn't get around to making a FULL DIY guide since i was in a bit of a time crunch and feeling under the weather, but i did at least get around to explaining how i ended up replacing them.
A couple videos SHOWING spring removal rather than just explaining it:

Have a w211 cdi myself. Seems that we all have the same issues. My rear ones were broken when i purchased the car. Luckily my car was parked when the front one exploded. I was cleaning my intake at the time. Ps. A swivel adapter and a lot of extensions was what it took to remove that bolt on the intake manifold in the rear of the engine if you havent done it yet. Cleaned the carbon off with purple power. Did wonders.

Had the same problem of seized bolts on two control arms on my Audi. Wish the factory would put a little anti-seize on the bolt shaft, sure would help us "northerners"!! Dropped and stripped down both my front sub-frame and rear sub-frame to seam weld and put rust converter and chassis paint on them. The bushings were in good shape but steel bolts and aluminum don't mix well with rock salt!! Get better and thanks for the video.

Both rear springs were also broken on my w211. Although it was on the top side. Previous owner rode them around broken whitout knowing. It was not an avantgarde so they have some space left. Controle arm bolt was seised, so undid all the stabilizers. Not a fun way to reinstall the whole mess.

Its easier to change the springs on the ground because you can use your body weight on the control arm.

This is a common problem on the W211. I'm on my third set of spring on my 321K mile 2006 E320 CDI. I'm getting ready to do my shocks and I think I'll try the Bilstein stock ride height springs. It can't be any worse.

How did you know they are broken? My rear end makes a loud bang over bumps on the passenger side. Also rear vibrates and wheel hops over rough roads. New shocks didn't solve the problem

Hi there, I wonder what are the options as spring rate is considered - are there factory stiffer or softer springs?
@scottmyers4069
@scottmyers4069 5 жыл бұрын
Softer no. Stiffer yes. So for slightly stiffer shocks, Bilstein B6 are popular. For an even stiffer set-up, you typically lower the ride height a bit. Again, Bilstein has this lowered spring set-up too, lowering the car 1.5" with B6 shocks for the lowered ride height as well.

@b.saulius3916 a spring compressor for a w210 works just fine, just have to use it the right way. Take your time and look at the job, with the shock off a bit of leverage on the hub gives enough room. I replaced all four with H&R sport spec springs, slightly firmer but a good combination with new standard shocks.

They usually snap right at the bottom so you cant see they're snapped.

lol, what a piece of junk. Like what kind of a company builds a spring that breaks. They probably sourced them from China. I have never heard of this before. I was actually shopping for a diesel MB but if they can't have a quality spring that will break while driving, Jesus Christ. Just imagine the quality of the rest of the car. What causes them to break???

Coil springs snapping are common on any car. This spring had 450k miles of fatigue on rust belt roads. I'm honestly shocked it lasted that long.

Agreed. People have had them fail at less than 50k miles. There are plenty of Hondas and Toyotas running around with 400K on the clock and factory springs still going strong. The shock should be the eventual wear item, not the spring. I ended up here because my W211 just blew a front coil out while sitting in the driveway. Like...are you kidding me? Who designed this...and did they use Chinese pot metal for spring steel?

@@barbarousrelic4591 I think they did that on purpose. Something to do with German EPA laws and having to get rid of cars after a certain age. They also used biodegradable wiring.. I will not even consider buying a German made vehicle anymore. I was seriously trying to get a diesel VW or Mercedes.. But not anymore. I don't need a vehicle that was designed to die on purpose

Coil springs breaking is very very common, most of the time you never know as it is the lower most coil that breaks and most people never even realize it has broken. EVERYBODY has this issue today Ford GM Mazda Toyota Nissan BMW Volvo ETC ETC. These failures are in part driven by weight savings today's coil springs weight almost half of comparable units from 30 years ago. Today's coil springs use higher strength and harder steels in the springs to make them lighter, this, however, has the side effect of making them more susceptible to corrosion inclusion fatigue failures. Why do you think there are piles of aftermarket options for stock coil springs nowadays. 25 years ago there were none unless they were for performance or stance applications... And if you have never heard of this before then you have not heard of much, as it is quite common.
