That was quite the spree at the start of the video. Great video, I hope the night wasn't all about being mauled by leopards.

The Soviets found they had an enormous number of rather old tanks, T-34s, T-54/55s and T-62s and when they started on their new generation vehicles the step up in terms of armour protection and firepower was just too big to think about operating them together so they went for a two tier tank production option. The T-64 had new composite armour and got the 125mm smoothbore and the new autoloader but it was expensive and could not be made in the enormous numbers they would need it in to replace the older vehicles with older guns (115mm smoothbore for the T-62 and 100mm rifled for the T-54/55). So what they did was they designed the T-72/64 to be cheap and simple and easy to mass produce (72) and expensive and capable (64). The T-64 ended up having a few problems which they fixed in the T-80 but the T-80 was still too expensive to produce in numbers to field it in every tank and motor rifle division. The T-72 was a basic tank with new stuff added as it got affordable and was proven so the T-72 eventually got laser range finders and new optics and ballistic computers and ERA and improved engines etc etc but it was the cheap easy to produce tank that had better armour and a better gun than older vehicles. The T-64 and T-80 were the expensive tanks with all new stuff that made them too expensive to mass produce in enormous numbers but they were also more capable. When the cold war ended they decided not to produce the T-80s any more and just make T-72s but to upgrade the T-72s with the newest stuff they were putting into the T-80s and new types of armour (composite and ERA), so the T-90 is basically the new expensive tank while the T-72 upgrades which they are still making are the cheap mass produced numbers tank. The Armata is a vehicle family. The T-14 is a tank. It is rather more powerful and more expensive than they need for the Ukraine conflict. The T-14 is like an F-22 and operates best with other Armata types which wont be deployed to Ukraine so you can't really test it to its full capacity so it is not really worth risking just to test it. Russia has more tank production capacity than the west combined. And as you find in this game that does not have FPV drones or land mines or proper real on call artillery, there is no vehicle that is safe on a modern battlefield.

Talking about the T-72 and how the T-90 is one, the thing about adding survivability to tanks rather than building a new one is also the story of the M1 Abrams. It was designed in the 70's to fight T-72s and now it's in the A2 Variant with all the things learned in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and even learning from the things in Russian Militaries.
