My new teachable course on realistic portraits
painting-the-light.teachable....
In this Video I paint a famous portrait of a young man by Sandro Botticelli.
I use egg tempera like he did and I try to explain my technique step by step. This video would be great for those of you who want to know more about the early Renaissance painting techniques when painters still used egg tempera as their medium.
If you like this video please like the video and subscribe.

I like the Botticelli technique. I have a lot of scheduled drawings and I have started about 40 portraits. Most are 75% finished. I like the medium of tempera. It was the first medium that I used! That and crayon.

I don't have a lot of knowledge on classical painting and which painter did what and when, but from an outsider's view, this is incredible. I'll have to keep this video in mind for my own paintings. Gorgeous brush strokes, too!! All the little fine lines in the hair!!!! I hope this painting made you proud.

Matheolia

thank you for your generosity! your videos are incredible! I started to do this mastercopy, but my proplasmos seems too dark and not very green like yours. I used yellow ocher, yellow raw umber and some green. Do you suggest me to add cadmium yellow? another question: when you start to darken the shadow, do you add something to your proplasmos? like black or dark umber? thank you so much.

@bodeaalex1142
@bodeaalex1142 2 жыл бұрын
You can buy gum arabic (powder or crystals) and some basic pigments and do your own watercolors (look for videos online to see how it is done). Once you do it once, it's very easy. Use them while still wet, freshly made.They will be thicker than comercial watercolors (which are extrafine because of machine grinding but do not have much covering power). They will be almost like egg tempera and you can paint them thinner or thicker. Look for the "dry brush" technique as well, it's important for this kind of work.

Hello! I’m making my way through your videos and really enjoying them 😁 I have 2 questions if that’s ok? 1. Do you think it’s feasible to mix up Verdaccio (colour), in acrylic paint and use that to prime a linen canvas instead of egg tempura? And 2. Is there a part 2 of the Mona Lisa video where you take it to completion? I’m quite keen to try Mona Lisa, I’ve not tried any Leonardo master copies or studies, because it’s quite daunting 😂 Thanks, also thank you for the videos, I expect it’s a lot of work on top of the actual painting. Valerie
@PaintingtheLight
@PaintingtheLight 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Valerie. Let me answer. 1 Yes but you cannot paint with egg tempera on that. You can paint with acrylic, or oil. If you want to oai t with egg tempera the (preferably) wood board, or the lines has to be prepared with rabbit skin glue gesso. 2 I plan to upload part 2 of mona Lisa video at some point in the future! Thank you for asking Stay creative!!

I'm totally fascinated by your technique. I have been a painter for 15 years, but I have always struggled with techniques. Acrylic does not allow me to make fine transitions. Can I mix acrylic with egg to finish the painting I have been doing with acrylic paints from the beginning?
@nonalolagirl
@nonalolagirl Жыл бұрын
I wonder what you mean by fine transitions? What are you trying to accomplish? I have never had any problems with acrylic not blending or being easy to use. It is also the easiest medium to paint over compared to tempera and oil. Maybe an acrylic medium will help you? There are glazing mediums for acrylics that make the paint more transparent and mediums to slow down the drying time which both help with blending. Water helps too if you don't want to use a medium. It can be mixed in acrylic to glaze and blend. Matte mediums gives more of a tempera finish btw, without the need of using eggs. I don't think eggs are good with acrylic.
@kafa82
@kafa82 Жыл бұрын
@@nonalolagirl I am thinking of subtle transitions between similar shades and values of light and shadow. in the meantime i bought a glazing medium and a drying medium for slow down drying. When I reach a certain level what i can do with acrylic, i keep doing with oil paints. It is much easier for me to achieve that more sophisticated look and stronger color intensity with oil. I avoid oil paints because of the smell, but I plan to buy white spirit and slowly switch to oil painting.
@nonalolagirl
@nonalolagirl Жыл бұрын
@@kafa82 Ohh that is fascinating! Because am the opposite lol. I started off with water mixable oil paints and then decided to mostly use acrylics in school because the drying time is so much more convenient. By the time I learned proper oil techniques, I couldn't do them on my own outside of class because I'm surrounded by acrylics. I am a master with acrylics. I find it harder to transition my technique from acrylics to oil because with acrylics you don't really need layers. It's easy to work from one or two layers and get amazing transitions and blending with less efforts. It's like a shortcut and maybe that's why you are struggling. You are using it like oil but it was created to remove many steps in the painting process. The only thing I can't do with acrylics is get very realistic effects because oil is just so effervescent! It's like bringing life to a picture. Even those who use acrylics to do photorealism still don't capture that light and life. Since the masters started with tempera before oil, I find these layering techniques so useful on learning how best to make those oil transitions. They literally used tempera techniques when they first started using oil and all of the things they added to oil to speed the drying process is meant to replicate tempera. But I would never apply these techniques to the acrylic ones that I've mastered. Although, I will admit it can work well for acrylics if you are working from a black and white reference photo. Using those base tones and building the color up with these glazing techniques really helps you fake a realistic and natural color without ever seeing it in the original reference

An obtusely hard critique from an instructor with the obvious intention of discouraging a talented young artist often has a lot of personal projection in it. They are often bitter that their own career will never progress much further, to see a student as a threat highlights exactly why they never did achieve more.
