So many of baseball’s great moments have come with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. These don’t just include clutch walkoffs, but also clutch strikeouts and defensive plays. This one game scenario has hosted countless baseball clutch moments.
You’ve seen plenty of them before, from the Brett Phillips World Series walkoff to the Francisco Cabrera NLCS winner. Knowing the outcome kind of ruins the tension though, doesn’t it? That’s why I’ve selected two lengthy at-bats from forgotten regular season games - just so we can appreciate the drama of bottom of the 9th, 2 outs.
We’ll be looking at the 2011 Mariners and 2011 Blue Jays in Game 1. Can Luis Rodriguez walkoff vs Shaun Camp? Then we’ll switch over to the 2015 Blue Jays and 2015 Yankees in Game 2. Can Andrew Miller strikeout Troy Tulowitzki? I wouldn’t count Tulo out, that’s for sure.
For fans of these teams, there should be a lot to relive. Mariners fans will want to forget the bad Felix Hernandez start, but will they want to remember some potential Luis Rodriguez Mariners magic? The 2015 Toronto Blue Jays were as memorable as they come, but can they get a key win in this 2015 Blue Jays Yankees matchup? You’ll have to watch this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, to find out the result of these MLB games.

I really like this concept of revisiting high leverage situations throughout history that the average fan has likely forgotten or maybe never saw. I even think you could make it a reoccurring sort of mini series where you walk through 2 games on the first Friday of every month or something. But I want to suggest one change: Building tension is a tricky thing. It needs to be a constant build, all in one direction. Now, it can build and plateau, build and plateau... it doesn't need to be all rise all the time... but it needs to never go backwards. When you build tension in story one and then jump to the other story, you're moving backwards in that feeling of anticipation. It's like turning one story from 0 to 3 and then jumping to another story that's back at 0. That type of back and forth story-telling is so difficult to do well that even a master of the craft like Shyamalan is only able to nail it about a third of the time. You have a really fun idea here. You don't need to crank up the intrigue by bouncing between stories. I suggest you start a story, build the story, finish the story, and move to the next one. I think you'll find it far more effective. Good luck.

I rarely spoke to my father. When he got really sick, I flew out to see him one last time. The mariners were playing like always, which is to say, awful. When they went down by 7, his brother left, telling my father that is what you get with the Mariners. I stayed and watched the comeback, and while we both got excited, we both knew that it was the Mariners and they'd eventually come up short. During Luis Rogriguez's entire at bat we were practically screaming at the television for him to win it, my heart was racing for several minutes watching him battle, just barely staying alive. When he walked it off, my father screamed in celebration as I ran around the room. I flew back home Wednesday the 13th, and my father died the 15th. For many, even the Mariner faithful, that walkoff was meaningless. It was just a single, insignificant win in the middle of decades of insignificance. For me, its a moment I'll never forget.

I love your content and I hope this comes across the right way, but I think this was kind of your first miss. I have thoroughly enjoyed every single baseball bits (even the goofy international players one) deeply, but I don’t think the idea for this one was conveyed especially well. I wanted to be invested in the outcome for each home team, but I just wasn’t. It might be an outcome thing, where I remember the 2015 Blue Jays and assume the 2011 Mariners missed the playoffs. But the most tension and excitement I felt was when I heard and saw that Toronto crowd on the edge of their seat. I think the stark differences of each situation, despite their similarity in box score, could have been the main point here, but it wasn’t really focused on as much here. Finally, some of the “tangents” you made in this one seemed loosely connected to the argument made in the video. Kershaw’s high breaking balls to illustrate mistakes vs punishment, Andrew Miller’s pitch repertoire, just didn’t add as much to the point of the video as I had hoped. I don’t mean to senselessly hate on every aspect of the video, because there are great segments to it, it’s just I think every other baseball bits communicates it’s central theme a little better than this one. I hope you keep making similar content and maybe learn from this video to improve as a creator. ❤

That Tulo - Miller at bat was something. I’ll never forget how long it took.

I’m a Rays fan but I cheered for the 2015 Jays really hard after the Price trade. So much so that I watched the game you used in this video via a totally legal stream while I was on vacation. That team was so special I thought they would be the AL champs at the very least.

Some may disagree with me, but imo this is your finest video. Perfectly captures the joy of what watching baseball is like, the slow tension, the almost ABSURD levels of waiting to see the game explode, the heartbreak of instant disappointment and the exhileration of victory. Baseball is a game about payoffs and this video understands that. If I wanted to get someone to enjoy baseball, I would show them this video.

It's so common as to be immortalized in the most famous piece of sports poetry I know of. "There is no joy in Mudville; mighty Casey has struck out."

As a Blue Jays fan, I remember the 2015 game. I don’t remember the 2011 game, but I bet it wouldn’t be hard for me to find someone who does. Great video. Best channel on KZfaq.

As a rays fan, that Brett Phillips hit will forever be my favorite baseball moment. Pretty sure I lost my voice and ran about 50 laps around my house😂
