@@Toastrackman The Iceni were a tribe of British CELTS, NOT ENGLISH, living in the area of modern Norfolk and north-west Suffolk. After the Roman invasion, they retained their territory as a client kingdom. There was a vocal minority in Wales who claimed Boudica as a uniquely Welsh heroine due to the fact that there were no English people in ancient Britain, only Celts. The Celtic Welsh could therefore claim ownership of the Celtic Boudica, or Buddug, as she was known within the growing Celtic nationalist movement. I respect all heroes and heroines regardless of their nationality provided the fought a clean fight, and Boudica was one of them. As for Longshanks, I'd like to know who named him 'HAMMER OF THE SCOTS'. A bit of a legend in his own lunch box. The fact that he "won" one battle against the Scots, doesn't make him overlord of Scots. We NEVER ACCEPTED him as our king with the exception of a few disloyal individuals who were most likely English settlers anyway.

This is a terrific story of Boudica and since it was mostly written by the Romans there's lots of information missing about her and or plenty of misinformation too. As they say it's the winners that write the history. Boudica sounds like a brave and good leader and I also imagine there's other women warriors/leaders in history that we don't know anything about. Well done video!

tom... did you know that there's absolutely no evidence of the Iceni's victims, other than the remains of a dismembered torso trapped under layers of burning thatch in the destruction layer in Camulodunum (Colchester), and the remains of a woman's hand in St Albans. Bearing in mind it's suggested there were as many as 100,000 Romans massacred during the revolt, so few remains is a puzzling anomaly. PS the skulls found in the London Wallbrook stream mentioned in the vid are actually now believed to be remains of Britons, possibly executed slaves. In relation to your reaction mentioned in your post, undoubtedly you have some Iken genetics within you. 👍 Cheers !

Boudicca was brave and heroic, with justice, and vengeance on her side. The problem pitting a large but disorganized mass of fighters seeking blood and glory vs a properly trained military force is that if the military force, even at a disadvantage can survive the first major assault by the untrained side and push them=n back or rout them. There are clues about her having the dame problem keeping goals or unity holding for her dispersed but unified at the time force like Spartacus. The initial Roman force was going to be reinforced later on too, so time was running out for her to finish the Romans off.

From Boudica's side of the story, be it, mostly in the revolving mindset of herself and the Goddess who came to inhabit her mind and body. Jacqueline "A definite crossroads for the country" .. In what respect A crossroads? Boudicca wasn't a hero or anti Roman, she & the Iceni bent the knee to Rome 40 years earlier, they didn't want to fight the Romans. She only kicked off after her husband king prasutagus died and a slimey Roman admin called Catus decianus took advantage of the governor of Rome being the opposite side of the country killing the druids n Wales. That's the only reason she did what she did. It wasn't because she wanted her country back . That's why nobody joined her Except her own people and some locals.

I disagree. She was not nearly as much skilled in actually fight the conflict she had picked than other enemies of the Romans (say Vercingetorix for example), even other barbarians did better. Her so called victories were only against vastly outnumbered smaller groups or unarmed civilians - the first really battle she faced she lost, and very bad (although I think the number 200.000 to 10.000 the ancient repots gave is not correct and the barbarians might been more between 50-80.000 men strong - of course still a huge sucess for the Romans who truly earned her fame as best army of that time again on this day).

@Moore Marriott Well I do not know if I can make you to understand that this is wrong (but it is). We were here speaking about if she was such a great leader or not. Not if other barbarians did performed bad as well (if we want to speak about all them, well that would take a lot of time). To be honest I have indeed a low opinion about a rebel leader who massacred thousands and thousands of civilians but performs bad if facing a real enemy. It does not matter if this leader is a man or woman. And there are reasons why I think she was not such a good leader like others, who also were able to summon a greater alliance and lead a rebellion (at least for a time). Vercingetorix had to face one of the greatest generals in history (Suetonius was good, no question, but I think not as good as Ceasar), and he actually beat him in a battle (Gregovia). After that he was quickly put down and like with Iceni it ended the real threats of greater rebellions. Arminius (about which I have a very low opinion, since he was a traitor towards the men who trusted him and honoured him) defeated a force that was maybe even bigger than that of Suetonius (today claims of 20.000 or more Romans in the Teutoburg forest are surely wrong I think, but it were more men than at Wattling Street). He never had a great victory after his first betrayal (although sometimes come close), but was able to avoid total defeat until the Romans concluded that Germania Magna was not worth the losses. Of course the barbarians who joined his fight had a high price for their mutiny, and they grow tired of his power hunger. But the slaughtering of whole cities is something which is hardly to ignore, what speaks against the revolt in Britannia if you want to admire here or despise the Romans for what they did - than you should also not forget or justify the crimes of the rebels. I think that the Iceni queen get so much praise is largely because she was a icon for the nationalists in the 19th century (like many other barbarians in other countries who want to made up her own heroes to create a great national history - Vercingetorix in France, Arminius in Germany). Today much praise is put into her and others because it is "in" to despise an Empire like the Roman and to honour the "freedom fighters", putting today moral and ideas in the way the people see history (which I see as a failure). That they were not less savage than the Romans is often ignored. And if we look to the bare facts, Boudicca is not THAT impressive, the revolt was a very short and bloody one, but also quickly crushed.

But is a great leader defined by that he (or she) can rally a huge amount of people to his cause, just to slaughter countless civilians (locals, people from Gallia and beyond alike - the so called "Romans" who were murdered in many cases were of course indeed local people with the right to call themself Roman, not people from Rome or Italy - not that this would justify the killing if they were)? Burning and pillaging, but then leading those who follow her or him to the slaughter like sheep? The barbarians including the queen surely get much over their heads to marching so stupidly into their doom. To lose to such a smaller force that had marched in the weeks before endless miles and surely was tired and exhausted, had fought against the rebels at Mona, and had no retreat - is that impressive? I think not. If you want to praise someone as a good leader Suetonius deserves it more in this whole thing, I think (I know, he was a brutal enemy, but after the destruction of so many settlements that is hardly a wonder). And his men have to be praised for what they achieved. Hard to imagine how the mood in their camp must have been on the evening before the battle. I admire them much more - an army of men from Britain and the rest of the Empire, fighting with little hope, no way out beside death or victory and against all odds.

Quite frankly, if it was me and my daughters' this happened to, there would be no battle tactics at all. It would be flat out, blind rage. You're joking, right? Even if she had managed to cause a big enough of a revolt to drive the romans out of Britain how exactly do you think it would have hurt Rome? The Western Roman Empire(the Eastern one survived another thousand years after it) didn't die from one "wound", it was death by a thousand cuts. If anything if they were driven out of Britain by Boudica it might have been better for them long term, not worst. It would have been a big wake up call just like Teutoburg was and it would have woken them up out of the complacency that allowed all those "barbarians" to gain so much power around it while they were defending their borders less and less.

I wonder if a dirty deal was done dirt cheap in the last battle. The rebellion had been tactically perfect to defeat the Romans up to that point. Suddenly, they left their brains at home and carried out the battle in a way that played to the Romans every strength. Something may or may not stink here, I wonder if some war leaders or whole tribes had been bought off? The Romans would keep it quiet, it looks much more macho if you've just beat them in open battle as opposed to slimily paying people to take a dive.
@ellgen1
@ellgen1 3 жыл бұрын
@@jelkel25 Sorry but "tactically perfect" ??? All she had done up to that point was raze a handful of roman cities which were very poorly defended (some having no walls around them) with next to none garrison troops. When it was time for her first large scale battle she was utterly destroyed since she didn't have any experience at all in that area of warfare. The way the romans used their superior tactics and disciplined troops to win a battle where they were outnumbered ten to one (or even twenty to one depending on the source) really just proves that Boudicca had no chance against an actual roman force consisting of trained legionaries and auxiliaries. Respect to her for standing up against roman occupation in the first place, but in the end her rebellion led to tens of thousands of her people being slain in battle and then later she committed suicide out of shame for her failure. The romans paying them off is just absolutely baseless, if you need more of an education on roman military might you should look it up yourself but don't come up with excuses as to why Boudicca lost in that battle cause that's just pathetic.
@jelkel25
@jelkel25 3 жыл бұрын
@@ellgen1 You forgot the legion she did defeat, the 9th. This was done with ambush tactics that had some success against the Romans. The uprising was perfectly timed while the majority of the Roman forces were in Wales. Camaludum (or however it was spelt) was defended and defeated. Yes, St Albans and London were undefended but you don't expel the Romans by waiting until they were defended, a fairly pitiless foe, the targets were well chosen. Do I need to continue?

Some comment that Boudicca was not so great and that her main victories were against civilians. But her army, or a portion of, did defeat a legion. I do not think that Boudicca was a war leader, a general. She was more of a political figurehead able to rally the Britons against their Roman oppressors. The Romans were brutal in war and looked down on anyone not Roman. They were not against wiping out cities, killing everyone. They also taxed heavily and took slaves whenever they felt like it. I can imagine that most Britons were very resentful. They were waiting for a spark to ignite them. When Prasutugus died the deal he had made came forth, that would cause the loss of half their land. But this was not enough for the Romans. Instead they raised taxes and confiscated goods to collect on loans. The tactics employed when resistance was encountered were over the top brutal. They could have dealt fairly but felt that in their superiority that the Iceni protestations were meaningless. They pushed the Britons into revolt. The degradation of Boudicca became a central rallying cry. Boudicca was probably a good speechifier and charismatic but I doubt she actually led from a military standpoint. The horrors visited on the Roman cities were the result of resentment of Roman conquest and brutal governing. Wiping out of citizens was not a new concept.

Boudica's target number one was Camulo-denum, the fortress of Camelot. The significance of this place (Colchester) is that it was the original Roman capital of Britain. They were so fond of it they slaughtered every single man woman and child. Centuries later, Arthur - who was a Roman of the imperial bloodline - seized Camelo-denum and set up his court there in order to signify the return of Roman order to Britain. Arthur was celebrated down the ages because he represented that lost order and every later regional king wanted to underwrite their own authority by boasting Roman credentials inherited from Arthur. BTW, as a Roman, Arthur was probably not born in Britain, let alone Cornwall. The restoration failed because the road to Rome was blocked for centuries by civil war.

Thanks for the really interesting documentary! I still think that the actual battle site may not be on Watling Street however! The Roman army could easily have advanced to Alchester (Bicester) and waited there to see if reinforcements would have come from Exeter. (as mentioned, via the Fosse Way) Following the sacking of Londinium they were in the perfect spot with Boudicca either heading to St Albans north or Silchester west, both of which linked up with Alchester. (presuming that part of the road network was built then of course!) After St Albans was attacked, Boudicca could either try and take on the Romans and head for Alchester, (via Akeman Street) or try to sack Silchester (there's evidence of a fire there around the same time - maybe a scorched earth policy). Once they knew reinforcements weren't coming, Paulinus had no choice but the meet Boudicca head on, so either he could have met her on Akeman Street or the less known and used road from St Albans to Silchester - by Paulinus travelling to Silchester and then up to meet her. (They would have been able to cover a lot more distance per day) Just a theory!! :)

What we see here is the formation of the British people's, a diverse and interesting group in the early stages of development! later to be affected by many who saw the riches of the lands of the north, from Norse men, to Normans, the Latins, Iberians and Hibernians, the Keltic/Celtic people are fascinating! Are Gaels, Gallic, Gauls, who knows these things? Similar sounds, but are they the same? Interesting how you portray what Boudica had to say, but surely it was not via our modern language of today, nothing like it!

Guerrilla warfare has always been the best way of fighting tyranny in Britain, from ancient history it has always been a winner. Tyrants seemed to always favoured pitched battles fighting on mass in order to achieve their goals as quickly as possible. It would have been better if Budica stuck to a long campaign of brutal guerilla strikes against the roman criminals grinding them to dust.

I have seen at least one other biography about the life of Boudica. One thing I could never understand is if, she lived at a time when there were no written records then, how is it that there is any information about her at all?

@@alexanderdoddy7590 They did and much of what they wrote has sadly been lost but what we do have is fascinating and has ensured at least the Roman version of history survives. I remember translating Caesar's Gallic Wars at school in Latin lessons and thinking why would a soldier be writing in this detail.....but he was not just a soldier, he was a statesman, author and probably one of the best military generals ever.

Olde English and Celtic languages, all using different colloquialisms according to their regions, With Latin mixed in where Roman occupation was prevalent. The Brits would wear wool or hide clothing dyed using plant or sea snails to make the various colours. Hair would have been long on both males and females. Like Glastonbury throwbacks lol

@@Toastrackman good reply. my grama was bad! Language's. Like old Norse & swedes rolled their R, s. whether they rolled their tongue or voiced from the throat and such like. As for what they looked like I meant physical appearance in face structure and such. I guess the nearest is to look at the Scots &Irish today.

She is my heroine, my name t Victoria, which is Boudicca and it means unconquered 😏 There is a statue of her on the embankment in London, it was a grove of Oak's ( sacred to pagans) back then. Some say this was were she was buried in secret. She is also the inspiration for Britannia , Britain's never shall be slaves. Happy Samhain 🧙☮️🇬🇧

It bothers me that the site of this battle is unknown. To have a complete history, one should have archeological evidence to go with written records and stories. If they could find this site, it would be a treasure trove of artifacts.

*Want to know how terrible the Romans really were, where ever they went, look no further than the Roman invasion of Britain, and life for the tribes under the Romans in Britain, if England was connected by land to Europe, the Romans would have massacre and enslave the entire population, being an island is what save the English population, due to the difficulty of transporting slaves by the thousands on boats at that time, It was a justified rebellion and should always be remembered.*
