I'm going all in on climbing in 2024 and sharing what happens along the way on this channel.
This video is part two of my three-week trip to Bishop. I work on my first V8 at the Buttermilks, meet my coach in person for the first time, and realize that I might actually be good (shock horror?!) at slab.
Part one, if you missed it: • I went bouldering in B...

I'm in the same boat as you are, but the way I like to think of it is "I'm okay at slab, I just suck at everything else."🤣 Seriously, tho, it really helps to know what you're good at and what you're not so that you can prioritize your weaknesses (and enjoy your strengths). I noticed that you seemed a bit lost on that V4 roof boulder in the last video. Note that I didn't say "weak." You might actually be pretty good at roof problems if you just give that style a little more practice. The way I think of it, board-style climbs are always going to require explosive power throughout the body, but both slab and roof often allow you to get by with strong hands and intelligent body positioning. Just a thought. Cheers!

Haha, that is EXACTLY how I used to think of it. Hence now being like maybe I'm actually not just okay at slab... maybe I'm actually good (shock horror). Interesting thought on the roof climb!! That does make a lot of sense. I'll continue to experiment 🤓 Thanks for watching!

@@512andbeyond Likewise, thanks for sharing worthwhile content!🙂It's interesting that you are hesitant to call yourself "good" at a particular style. I try to avoid that word in thinking about my own climbing, but that's mainly just because I try to keep a beginner's mindset to avoid becoming complacent. Are you afraid that if your declare yourself good at something it means that you don't get practice it as much without feeling guilty about not working on your weaknesses? I like Alex Puccio's take on that, which is the 60-40 Rule. That is, spend 60% of your effort working on weaknesses, but reserve 40% for further developing and enjoying your strengths. Seems reasonable to me.

@@adamhaas141 It's complicated - actually something I'm gonna talk about in the next video but I'll try explain via text here! The things I'm good at are not very "normal"... slab, mantles, arete climbing. They're all things that a lot of people don't like. So I didn't get much exposure to them for a really long time, just coz the people I was climbing with didn't climb much of them, while getting exposure to alllll the things I'm bad at: crimping, power, board climbing. After years of that, I just figured I was bad at everything. Sounds kinda depressing, but I looked at it more like "okay, the movement of climbing doesn't come naturally to me but I'm good at other stuff - like remembering beta, trying hard, having endless psych". It's only in the last year or so that I've spent more time on those things and noticed that I might have been fundamentally wrong about being "bad at movement". So it still feels quite new and like I need to do more exploring / test myself a bit and see how good I actually am at those things 🤷‍♀ That sounds like a good rule!! I'm still new to leaning into my strengths too - obviously, having only recently discovered that they exist 😆

Hi if you haven’t already tried, at camp 4 boulders in the valley, you could try initial friction v1, blue suede shoes v5, and if successful the kauk slab v7/v8 to really solidify your slabification expertise in the future probably best in fall on a crisp day heads up as you might enjoy these
