I was in the same store yesterday. Missed it by a day. That chain has a great selection - but unfortunately for a really high price at times. For what you paid for the Stagg - I get it and I'd have been tempted to do the same. I've only ever seen them combine it into a "basket" and they've not been willing to break it into a single purchase.

Such an easy fix. When you buy something allocated, they open it when you buy, and pour you a "sample" . If you still want it. You pay MSRP. If not. The next person will! And no one will sale on Grey markets. Since they will be opened!

Yeah $50 for sazerac is highway robbery. A store near me recently got it so I tried it for $30. Not bad but I’ve found that non-allocated Japanese whisky’s taste a lot better than most of these super rare whiskeys

you don't know Americans. Most don't understand how money works and go into thousands of dollars of debt to fund their bottle collecting habit. I'm not rich, but my wife an I both have high level professional jobs, no kids, and a very affordable home (paid 150k... though the value has nearly tripled in 5 years). My collection of bottles is pathetic compared to most. I have some decent allocated stuff like Stagg, Bookers, Blood Oath, Woodford Historic, Makers BEP, Blantons, and EHT but I don't have anything insanely rare. In total, I have 130ish bottles and and the most expensive item is probably $150 (Bombergers 2022) but most are around 40-50. I don't pay secondary ever and I'm patient about waiting to obtain bottles at a good price. There are many in our local bourbon group who have 1/3 my income and routinely pay secondary because of FOMO. Those people are the normal American consumer, sadly. The biggest thing I've learned in this hobby - don't listen to hype/don't let FOMO creep into your buying decision. I thought I HAD to have Blantons... I do not like Blanton's. Current releases are increasingly younger and they taste like bottom shelf swill. Regular old Buffalo Trace is better (it's thinner but it's blended which helps deliver a better experience). Stagg is okay... not $100-200 good. It's $60 good. It's better than 1792 Full Proof but not better than most ECBP Batches. Larceny B523 is stellar and better than than the last 3 Stagg drops. Larceny B523 is allocated but when you find it it's rarely marked up to the moon like Stagg. People here would fist fight for a chance to buy Weller SR at $35 and will defend it to their grave. It's not great. I wouldn't pay a penny over $25 for it... because it's a damn mixer. /rant Meanwhile... people completely sleep on Redwood Empire Pipe Dream, Lost Monarch, and Emerald Giant. Easily some of the best $30 bottles on the market. For high proof I'd grab JD SBBP or KC 9 Store picks all day. A good KC 9 Store pick is easily the best 120 proof whiskey you can buy for sub $100 MSRP.

Yeah, Ohio here is kinda the same. Stores are controlled by the state. Older retired ppl with time on their hands wait in line when the store opens on delivery dates. Hurting is boring here, zero chance of randomly finding anything interesting.

“Punch a baby” 😂😂😂😂. Yeah, Bourbon hunters are nuts! Wellers Special Reserve is always available in Ohio. We may go one or two weeks at most without it. Now, the Antique is another story! I haven’t seen a bottle of that for MONTHS!

Just basic supply and demand. A lot more fans of bourbon down here so they can mark stuff up more. But if you visit distilleries in Louisville you would be able to find things that never make it out to CA.

Yeah, I have noticed that Calfornia prices seem to be lower than here in Northern Kentucky. One thing that has happened here in Northern KY is that these two Indian groups have bought up most of the liquor stores and jacked the prices up. And the few non Indian-ownd stores that are left have thus been granted the permission to raise their prices also. 🤬

The Good Spirits on Turkeyfoot has some good store picks. They let you try them first like a lot of the stores down there. They keep a lot of stuff behind the counter so talk to them and they might hook you up especially if you buy one or two of their picks out on the floor (there is a younger guy named Raj that is cool). Stadium Liquor also has some good picks, if you are able to make it down semi regularly enroll in their points club to have the chance to buy some cool stuff.

I’ve had a bottle Stellum before. Don’t think I was blown away but many ppl recommend it because it’s availability and price.

I paid $180 each. ER was $60. That table had some decent price and others were overpriced. Russell’s single Rick house was $400, Michters BS $190, and Blantons $100.
