Metal / rock fans' first time reaction to Zac Brown Band's "Colder Weather" while checking out some Peerless Rye

Going to share an extremely vulnerable comment about this song. Im a Gold Star Mom who lost her son in December of 2011. The Zack Brown Band was his favorite group and this song was very popular in the months following Justin's death. Spent many drunk nights with this song on repeat, tears streaming, praying that would be the night I would just wake up and be with him. I'm very thankful now God never answered those prayers, but even now, hearing this song puts me right back in that moment. 😢😢😢

Thank y'all for your kind words. It's been been almost 13 years since we lost our son, but it's nothing you never get over, you just learn how to cope in a more productive way. This song though is definitely a trigger though for a lot of bad memories, and I didn't realize how much until I sat and listened. I'll probably never listen to it ever again.

Thank you for this reaction, I struggle with this version of this song, because it is more powerful when he does it. My ex was a Navy veteran that suffered PTSD with severe bouts of depression, VA's answer was to drug him to a zombie state, so he refused to go and eventually took his life, for some reason this song brings it all back for me.

I think bringing it back is the intent of the song. Hard to interpret it otherwise. - Keith

The Boot sat down with songwriter Wyatt Durrette to discuss the Zac Brown Band‘s hit single, ‘Colder Weather.’ Wyatt started the song, but it soon turned into a group collaboration with ZBB members Zac Brown and Coy Bowles, as well as Southern Ground Records artist Levi Lowrey. "There was a girl I was seeing, who lived in Kansas City. We really liked each other, but geography and timing just wasn’t working for us. She was getting pretty frustrated with the whole thing and wanted me to slow down, as far as traveling so much and all those things. I wasn’t willing to do that because we were just getting started, and I’m chasing my dreams. I was going to see her. We were in Green Bay, Wisc., playing a show with Little Big Town, and it was pouring down snow. We were supposed to go to Kansas City the next day for some radio thing, but the radio people canceled. Instead, we just went on to wherever we were going next. I had to call her and tell her that I wasn’t going to make it. She was not a happy camper. She let me have it. I hung up the phone, walked on the bus and wrote the chorus and the melody to the chorus. Me and Zac worked on the first chorus together. I knew the song was special. You can just tell as a writer when you’ve written something that has a chance to be big or special. I knew that one was. I sat on the song for six months after that. I did what I always do: sing it to the guys and say, “What do you think of this?” And they’ll go, “Oh yeah, that’s great!” Levi Lowrey is one of the best artists I know. He’s a poet. I felt like this song needed the way he wrote, so I invited Levi over to my house one night, and we wrote the rest of the verses. It turned out great. It was so weird because that same night, Coy, our guitar player, stopped by. He was just coming by my house to say hey. He didn’t know we were writing. He sat down and was listening to us write the verses, and he said, “How about a bridge?” He read one to us, and we were like, “Hell yeah! That’s perfect!” [Laughs] So we stuck that in there, and I brought all that to Zac. Zac and I finished writing the alternate chorus in the end. That one’s special to all of us. It holds a spot because of what we do and being away and all those things. For those guys, I think that song rings on missing their family. That’s the beauty of art: Everybody has their own take on what the song can mean. As for me, it’s a story of impossible love, where geography or timing gets in the way of it, and it’s just not possible."

Years ago, I randomly came across a cell phone video of the songwriter singing a different song he wrote called "The Space Between" which I instantly loved. Then I was surprised to discover he wrote "Colder Weather" which was one of my favorite songs. His original version had another verse that the Zac Brown Band cut for whatever reason. I was just now trying to search for his "The Space Between" song, because I couldn't remember the name of it to make this comment. While searching for that song, I happened to watch a video of him singing "Old Trouble Like Me" on a channel called ASW Distillery. Not the best recording, since it seemed like it was a cell phone video, but I fell in love with that song as well.. It only had 122 views, and his "official upload" of the song only has 469 views, which seems pretty crazy to me.

My day was spent attending to personal VA needs and treatment. As is often the case, on long drives or boring rides something will lead us to times of quiet thought and memories of friends and comrades that have slipped away in our past. The ride and the theme of this reaction dragged me to another time and place when I came into your program this evening. Coincidental thoughts and random luck processed me as I listened to this band and the voices. Different sad stories and depressing thoughts came together. My loss wasn't about love, but the permanent loss and damage to poorly fix a temporary problem. 55 years later guys and my question is still Why? Thanks for listening.
