In this video, we'll take you on a walking tour of Bourj Hammoud -- Beirut, Lebanon's Armenian District. After the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, Bourj Hammoud of the Matn District of Lebanon became a safe haven for the Armenian refugees.
These Armenians of Lebanon brought their considerable talents with them and today, this Lebanese Armenian city you see is teeming with life and craftsmanship from goldsmiths, jewelry makers, and perfumers to spice shops, the best Armenian street food in Lebanon, and more.
In addition to showing you Arax Street and Marash Street in the "City of Life," we'll also take you for a final stop at Union Marks, a hidden gem of Beirut in Bourj Hammoud.

Burj Hammoud is a fascinating area if you go into the small streets, and Nabaa and Dora as well, if you have a thick skin.

@The Remote Traveller i learned some western armenian and want to try the delicious food of that quarter. basterma from medo and bedo, lahmajoon, cikufte... i am from istanbul where the remains of armenian presence and history is fading at a frightening rate (as it is in the whole country), so seeing an organic (western) armenian environment is something i really wish to experience. thank you for your video and nice comment!

Yes, it’s very safe. Certain areas can be a bit risky at times. Be on watch near Baalbek, but Beirut and most of the coastal cities are very safe. Haven’t had any issues here in my 3 years here personally.

@@ConnorJudsonGarrett Whats the possible knot in Baalbek is it hizballah operatives harrassing outsiders?? Also is it accurate i bring US$$ cash then convert it on black market no use Atm or banks??
@ConnorJudsonGarrett
@ConnorJudsonGarrett 2 жыл бұрын
@@LoverOFhopeANDcompassion I'm not entirely sure. At least from what I've heard here....from time to time, they're blocking the roads towards Baalbek...armed and all....most likely you'd be fine....I've seen people taking trips that way and we will soon, but when we do, we're just gonna be eyeing things closely. If you go that route, I'd just make sure to listen to the talk around it and gauge the temperature....if that makes sense. As for dollars...yes, it's better to bring dollars and convert on the black market....many stores will even offer a good rate because they're happy to get USD.

This video is too short to cover Bourj Hammoud. There is a lot more to Bourj Hammoud than what this video covers. I was born in there, though I am not Armenian. The commentator in the background made a biased political statement when he said that Armenians came down to Lebanon as a result of the Ottoman massacres. We have heard that the Turks raided Armenia and expelled a portion of its population as a result of Armenians raiding Turkish villages and massacring its women and children, even cutting pregnant women's bellies wide open and their guts and fetuses falling out.
