I was at Voglesang camp in Germany with 16 Ind Coy Parachute Reg and we were taught how ride safely on a Challenger tank. You must only sit on the turret we were told. After a while the tank went over a knife edge, not the size of that one, only a pound 10 - 12ft high. The tank proceeded to traverse the knifedge up and no stopping . The bloody thing slammed down on the other side and two lads fell off. One over the side but one fell forwards over the front. Kin hell I thought as the tank jerked forwards a yard or so. I thought the lad must have been squashed but he was ok. The offficer commander apologised and explained how it should have been done, his driver was a novice. Right let’s have another go he suggested, f**k off we retorted.

Brings back memories, going at that knifedge. Stick it in 1 going up, then into 1-4 once shes levelled out and the front starts to touch the other side...

Something similar in Germany near Fally. Being in the back of a sealed up FV432 and doing that is not much fun lol

I my self have done that very test on that exact hill back in 2003. The bloke driving that tank just failed because your supposed to stop the tank right at the top on the knifes edge.

We used to have to drive up to the knife edge and hold it for a few seconds, then accelerate away. It was good practice for loading on to a transporter ,

As a school boy at a Bovinton open day we got a ride in a Stolly, we approached the knife edge and I thought this is going to be scary but it the last minute it turned and went around the end of it!

If you've a full car licence, You can buy an ex army tracked vehicle and drive it solo on L plates as your car licence has a provisional 'H' cat on it. You don't need a c0-driver like you do in a car as there's no seat for one next to the driver (obviously)

I can vaguely remember ,I think we had learner plates when I was training on centurions on the roads around bovington in the early seventies but not on cross-country

You took a road test and a cross country test and on passing the course it was group H on your driving licence which I still have for tracked vehicles

AFVs with ‘L’ plates on are a common sight on the roads around Bovington. (As are chewed up kerbstones where the drivers didn’t quite get their turns right).
