A couple of years ago I made three bows for a customer and good friend now out of a walnut tree they came off his great grandfather's farm. Made one for him and both of his sons. It's a good feeling.

I stumbled acrossed this video and it makes a statement to me. American craftsmanship, this is becoming a lost art. Jim, Thank You so much for sharing the many years of experience, time, trial and error and money invested in your craft. You have a unique ability. As a bowhunter and a custom rod builder it gives me a sincere appreciation for what you do. Stationed in Northern Virginia, a few folks from our bow club attended a bow making class and I was totally blown away at the bows they showed us when they returned. Awesome video, god bless you and godspeed with your unique abilities.

WOW! I was watching You Tube when someone came to the door. When I got back, your video had started. It had just started and I watched as you opened. I did not see the title at all but I soon recognized what you were doing. My heart about jumped out of my chest. In the early 60's my next door neighbor had a shop that was maybe 10 x 12 feet and he made bows just the same way you do. His name was McChesney and he soon had me working with him. He made what he called a laminated, compound bow. It took him over a week to make one bow and they were beautiful. We then started making arrows and painting them for registration in competition for archers. And hunters, of course. Turned out that he was very famous for his bows years later. I found an article in Boy'S Life Magazine about him. I am writing to thank you for your video. It has recently dawned on me what an influence he was on me. I am 72 years old and still work in wood. I sure liked that old man. He gave me a lot. You guys probably have a very profound effect on boy's that see you work and that you share with. Great video, WOW!

This has just confirmed to me just how much I have to own one of Jim's bows one day! So much work, care and attention to detail.

i cannot say that i loved this video that allowed me to watch a true craftsman at his bench but ....so much of what you said was over my head .Watching u work without understanding a lot of what u did was truly mesmerising... cheers Big Jim

I own a 60" Mountain Monarch and a 56" Thunder Child. The level of attention to fit and finish is second to none. I actually purchased these two 2nd handed and had sent them back to Big Jim to see if he could build up the grips to a medium-high wrist. Not only is his work top shelf, but he is prompt in replying to emails/calls and his customer service is outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and seeing the process of how he builds bows.

19:30 you can see he says he's doing multiple processes on multiple bows. You should take that as a hint it won't show finished product but teaching folks how to make a bow. No need to be rude if you had actually paid attention. Very nicely done, Jim. I appreciate your time and effort.

Your shop is well aligned for the steps of your manufacturing process, I'm sure that you and your crew have put plenty of thought into creating that smooth work flow. Damn I want one of your bows buddy!!!!!

Back in the mid 1990’s, I ventured into making my own longbows, I basically did as Jim does, with much less forms for the bow building! My journey was not easy or cheap, you learn to live with fiberglass splinters, even wearing a mask, you will get Exotic wood dust, in your lungs, cuts, bruises, etc. You will bleed! Anyone who takes pride in what they create, you patience will be tested. Your first bow never turns out right, but! The bug has bitten you hard, and all you can think about is the next build, 100’s of different riser woods, same with lamination woods and tapers, fiberglass thickness, Etc. Then length of bow, poundage of bow, and getting that right, design of longbow, old school “D” style or modern. Then make your form, or many forms, making a hot box, making very good fade outs, it is very overwhelming! The biggest hurdle of all, creating a Hand shock Free bow. When it was done, I had a very nice shooting 64” “D” style long bow, that was designed to be very, very, durable, you could drive tent stakes and string it, and go kill animals! It was at that time for me, a very good solid bow design. But! For the cost of money and time I could have bought 30 bows from a good bowyer, , my buddy at the time (I was living in Colorado at the time) told me that forget making bows, no matter how good they are to time consuming, he looked me straight in the eye and said, make Snowboards! That’s were the money would be, hind site, he was more right then wrong, many people have made a very good living as a bowyer, but there working very hard and long hours, earning every penny! It’s not a get rich proposition, it’s doing what you love, and making a living at it. Custom Bows with the materials built like you want, shouldn’t be cheap, and never be taking for granted!

Takes me back to simpler times when as a boy I went to YMCA Camp and made my own bows and arrows. They were of course simple bows, but we had to chisel, whittle and sand then glue up finish trimming, sand some more, put on shellac and sand some more make our own strings and then we could go to the range and practice shooting them. I was very strong and broke more than a few of my bows and wondered what I was doing wrong. Now I know: I didn't have a beard, head band or tatoo's. But I was only 11 years old, so I guess that was unavoidable. Mom was so strict you see. Anyway, great video and I enjoyed your on going description of each step.

I knew an auto detailer who took pinstripes off the paint with a razor blade. First he would hone the edge on the windshield glass. It never left a scratch in the paint. Your chisel for removing tape from the bow reminded me
