I just came from other videos where bowerbirds went all out: Decorated with flowers, made these beautiful elaborate seduction pads, had an impressive song repertoire... and this one decorated with trash 🤦🏻‍♀️ Single use plastics to make matters worse. And to top it off, he stole car keys and money 😂 Nature has a sense of humor.

I'm sure they used berries and flowers or even feathers. Blue is a rare color in the wild, so I can see how it might be seen as 'impressive' to find a lot of blue things. Though I'm sure manmade items have been competition a little stiffer.

Diane Cho Well, see, some species have different mating patterns. For example, humans. We mate with one or more partners, and mate for either life or a few months/years. This is objectively, from a biological standpoint

Everyone is posting things like "balls deep" and "demolished it" and "put a * in it". But birds don't do things that way. Birds have cloaca or vents which they usually only touch for a moment in something called the cloaca kiss. In other words, there isn't penetration. Psht mammals, always looking at the world through their junk... Except for monotremes. They retain this character too.
@detronyx
@detronyx 10 жыл бұрын
MOST birds don't do it that way, but ostriches, swans, and ducks all have a type of penis (not like that of a mammal, though)
@scraggle_grackle
@scraggle_grackle 10 жыл бұрын
It might be a little pedantic to point out independently evolved structures that are biologically very dissimilar to mammal reproductive structures in a handful of species among about 10,000 species of aves. They still do not have testicles externally and the video has comments concern the bower bird which shows how the focus on a penis isn't the point. I even had a qualification word "usually" for circumstances that are unique like these so cherry-picking the preceding sentence and adding "MOST" to make is seem like it's some major oversight seems a little excessive in the context of the posts obvious targets and readers, purpose and hedging.
@detronyx
@detronyx 10 жыл бұрын
Scraggle Grackle I was simply pointing out that not all birds mate via "cloaca kiss". Your comment implied that ALL birds mate this way. " Birds have cloaca or vents which they usually only touch for a moment in something called the cloaca kiss" was your only use of "usually", which only suggests that sometimes perhaps they mate for longer than a brief touch. Not to nitpick; just pointing out something that wasn't made clear in your post, for anyone who didn't know that some birds have an evolved penis-like structure.
@scraggle_grackle
@scraggle_grackle 10 жыл бұрын
"Your comment implied that ALL birds mate this way....was your only use of "usually", which only suggests that sometimes perhaps they mate for longer than a brief touch." False. It does not imply that. It does not "only suggest" that. The qualifier only means that this is often the case and that there are exceptions but makes no mention about what exceptions there are. You assumed what exceptions are meant or the nature of those exceptions. That is not charitable or logical. The logical implication of the usage of the qualifier "usually" only implies that there are times when this (the assertion) is not the case. You made an assumption about it applying to the time and made an inference based upon that assumption. By all means, nit pick. I don't mind. My other point was that your nit-picking in the context was pedantic and unwarranted considering the people it addressed, the video, and the actual implications and context of what was said. The context is important. For example, you could say that an implication of me saying this "In other words, there isn't penetration." implies that birds never have a sort of penetration but within the context of the preceding sentence that already used a qualifier it should be obvious that it wouldn't imply such a thing.
@scraggle_grackle
@scraggle_grackle 10 жыл бұрын
You obviously know something about how birds mate. My point is only that you misconstrued the implications of what I said actually and that the nature of your response was missing the context and was out of touch with the post you were responding to where it should be evident that the original had a certain context, type of person, humor, etc. in mind. Your response seemed to ignore those things for a chance to expound and perhaps, condescend (only by an unreasonable and uncharitable assumption) beyond what was necessary in that context.
