I never listened to LOW side 2 until I listened incessantly to PHILIP GLASS’s LOW SYMPHONY. I was embarrassed I couldn’t enjoy side 2 particularly because I’d play Side 1 as warmup for a riotous Friday or Saturday night. GLASS did wonders for opinion of LOW. I suggest always that when every BEATles and Stones fan is dead the culture will still regard LOW Symphony and therefore BOWIE. BOWIE will be known in 22nd century because of GLASS’s LOW, HEROES LODGER symphonies. I lost regard for the BEATles and the STONES after repeated listening of GLASS’s interpretation of BOWIE’s music. Publicity machine can’t help those two bands in the next century.

I heard it the first time this week and was blown away. Also, where would you rank “Buddha of Suburbia?” I love it and it gets better with every listen.
@ofeliawotsits60803 жыл бұрын
I give the song Life on Mars 11 out of 10, but then it is my my all time favourite. For me it was all down hill after Scary Monsters, and all the later albums were just too weak. Strangers When We Meet was the anomaly being absolutely brilliant, and Where Are We Now was the best last song for me. I would rate the LP Young Americans far higher than you, above Station taking the albums as whole works. Very interesting any way.
@brianconway100 Жыл бұрын
All downhill after Scary Monsters? Far from it. Heathen, Hours, Blackstar all brilliant albums, plus more. I'm guessing that you're not 'totally' familiar with all of the albums after Scary Monsters (and I do mean totally familiar to be in a position to judge). I feel the same about Life On Mars, probably my favorite song of all time. I highly recommend giving any of the 3 albums above at least 10 plays.

I sincerely wonder why you left out the Tin Machine albums. Sure, they were called albums by "a band" back in the day (as a promo claim), but no doubt are they real Bowie albums like these 25 others. That "I am just part of a band now" thing is/was obviously just one of Bowie's many roles and guises, so leaving them out of any serious studio albums overview is just silly. Anyway, while Tin Machine II surely competes with anyone's choice for the bottom end of the ranking, the first Tin Machine album is actually really cool. Sure, Bowie made lots of much better albums, but it's definitely better than a few in his catalogue.

It’s all subjective, but I can’t really argue with your list because, well, it’s your list. ;-) My top four are identical to yours. But Blackstar would be fifth, and The Next Day would be sixth (I can’t believe you have TND ranked so low). And while you rank Station to Station high, it’s ironic that you rank the song Stay so low. I think that’s the best song on the album. Reality is better than Outside. And Low is better than Heroes. His 80s output is certainly his low point, but you can’t possibly rank Never Let Me down higher than Let’s Dance. I mean, I don’t particularly care for Let’s Dance, but the three hits are decent songs. And Never Let Me Down has virtually nothing worthwhile. But, all in all, not a bad list. Cheers.

Completely disagree about the ranking of Bowie’s nineties and eighties lps. They don’t deserve such a high ranking. On the other hand ‘Berlin’ trilogy lps would have deserved a better consideration. Aladdin sane at the third place is also disputable. To me: ziggy/hunky/low are top Bowie albums. Heroes/scary/station are close second. Diamond/Aladdin are a bit a moreofthesame of Bowie ziggy-era: some immortal song but the albums are average considering it’s Bowie (not Bolan). Next day/Blackstar are tremendous albums but also painful ones given that are premonition of what Bowie could’ve done….
