So you said in your podcast that people complain about how much you talk in your videos. I love that. Anytime I see a video and there's no talking to explain what's going on, I immediately end it. Can't stand those. So keep it up. BTW, I've got half the cash saved up for my grinder, so hopefully you'll see my order in a month or 2.

Love the knife, beautiful work. Quick question on your Tool arm storage- do you get a lot of Steel dust blow back onto your stored Tool arm? And if not please tell me how you’re able to accomplish this. I get a ton of grinding dust back there but would love to have my other Tool arms closer to the grinder. Thanks for your time.

Hey man, who makes that grinder you're using?!? 😉 - Dude the knife game out awesome. I can second the quench plates... Haven't had a warp since I stared using em! That handle clamping system is legit.
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 2 жыл бұрын
I actually got the quench plate idea from your channel, and I've pretty much eliminated all of the full length warps in my blades. I still get some bacon warping occasionally if I water quench or get too thin on the bevel, and when making daggers there's really nothing that the plates touch, so they'll come out with warps too. Your quench plate idea gave me one of my own, and so I made a straightening jig for tempering in the oven. Put a grid of threaded holes in two pieces of flat channel iron, then use grub screws to put pressure on warps while the blade is tempering. It starts working at around 400F, that's about where the pressure you put on the steel will stay after it cools off. If there's a lot of warps I'll make adjustments to the screws and step it up 10deg at a time until all the warps are out, which gives me several adjustments before I reach final temper. Haven't had to grind a single warp out of my blades since, and it gives the steel more of a heat buffer in the oven so you're not overheating the thin spots when the elements turn on. Between applying your quench plate idea and the temper jig, I don't think I'll ever have to scrap a blade post heat treatment due to warping.

This was another awesome build, and I love the finished product, but I appreciate more the simpler builds that don't have super expensive tools, and a plasma cutter is a no-go for me. If you would have used an angle grinder or something to make the profile, I would have been impressed.

Laser is the way to go. I built my own 4x8 CNC Plasma table, but the amount of cleanup would be too great considering I didn't already have a 2x72 setup for doing good 90 degree cleanup (my dad's 2x72 doesn't have a good work rest). I bought his laser cut kit and it was great, but I didn't have connections to have it laser cut myself. It was a chicken vs. egg thing for me.........I needed a great 2x72 to clean up my plasma cut parts to build a great 2x72 to clean up other plasma cut parts and fabrication projects. I plan to build a rotary platen for mine to hold a 4" wheel, small wheels, platen, and slack belt area. Helicopter John (has a youtube build) sent me his cad files for the aluminum 2x72 that he designed and cut on his cnc mill. I prefer to work with steel, although I sometimes use aluminum and my brother has a cnc mill, so I went for the Revolution and will instead incorporate John's ideas and perhaps drawings into a steel rotary platen, combining the best of both worlds. I thought the price for the tubing kit was a bit high, then paid more at my metal supplier, which has decent prices in SoCal. It is nice to have options from drawings all the way to laser cut parts to build the revolution.

Very nice blade design itself, I like the texture the rasp provides contrasted with the shape. Any concerns with how much smaller the tang is? Many of the other makers are using a wider tang tapering down.

I treat the steel like 1095 - works great. I did not test for hardness as there really isn't a good spot on the blade for that. I suspect 58-59 HRC. Thanks for watching.

Hey Guys; going to post this in all the videos. Have to say lived these builds & was a HARD choice since we only get 1 vote. Would be better to have a 1, 2, and 3 choices since many channels have fewer subs but did great builds. That way there could be a bit more of an average top choices & determination of top 5 kind of challenge. @Tyrell Knifeworks got my vote but @Green Beetle, @Red Bears Ops, @Wengels Workshop were all right there at great builds for a 2 or 3 place fight.

Good craftsmanship, but the tang and handle are a bit small and the blade is a bit short. Other than that it's really good work. 👍

Very cool!! You did a great job! 1 question... Which woodworkers vise is that? It looks really solid compared to other ones I've seen

Pretty sure that's a Yost, and they have a few different sizes on amazon. Some other companies selling basically the same vise there as well, probably all made from the same cast.

They're definitely a step up from a comparable Irwin vise, lots of extra features and better made.

First, it’s a great knife. But I thought it was a foraging contest, not a cut out and grid?

I have asked Denis at Tyrell knife and he said to ask you about I would like to get a Damascus knife laser engraved and wonder if I should get it completely sanded down then engraved before etching or after the etching?
@HouseMadeUS
@HouseMadeUS 2 жыл бұрын
I would do that as the last step. Also it makes sense to laser engrave a test piece just to make sure it has the desired look. Good luck!

First of all, beautiful knife. I love the overall size and profile, less the sawtooth spine (I hate Rambo knives, and this element is not traditional Bowie). I really dig the canted guard and the copper w/it’s patina. The handle material is a perfect match for the guard, and the rustic texture of the blade’s source material. The things I noticed that I didn’t like were mostly just personal preference. For instance, I am more of a forged knife vs stock removal fan. The rasp patterns might have been less deep/severe, and more muted if they had been hammered down and ground out a bit. I really like to see the character of the source material, but less pronounced. This also makes it difficult to see your plunge lines. They are not very defined, and are lost in the file pattern. And finally, the handle, spacer, guard and shoulder interface seems like it might not have perfect figment. I thought I saw evidence of d some small gaps, but the video made it hard to get a good look. It may just be my eyes. WTBS, this is certainly in the running for my favorite so far. Great job!

Looks awesome. I'm a new subscriber. Good luck in the challenge. I have one question since you used a plasma cutter. I'm not a pro knife maker and have only made a few from nails, one forged from a bolt and a railroad spike knife. I have a piece of precision cut .125"×1.5"×36" O1 tool steel and I called a machine shop in my area to see if I could get my custom patterns cut out of my piece steel. The guy at the machine shop said he has experience making knives and all they have is a plasma cutter and that would not be good for cutting anything intended for knife making. Is he wrong?

It's definitely not as accurate as waterjet or laser. I've had no issues with decarb or HAZ. Other than the cuts being a little soft it works great. I've made 100s of knives this way. Just grind 1-2mm back from the edge to ensure good steel. 🤙🏻

Sorry to blow up the comment section, but how'd you come up with adding miracle grow? Was it nitrogen or phosphorus heavy?

I read about this online. I think it's the ammonia that makes the patina.

I never got a manual with my Paragon kiln, is there input needed in program on the Sentinel controller?? Salem Straub told me he uses around 3 on the the meter. But he has the older control & its needed in program. Yes I had the gas kit installed when I ordered it from factory.

I run it at about 5 actually. That seems to really flood the kiln properly. Also Argon expands 10x once it hits 1000F. So that helps tremendously. If you need an extra hand programming the sentinel let me know via email. Brian@housemade.us - I'm a pro at it now after working with Paragon on it.
