What's the 44 Club you may ask? Well it all started in the outro of this video • HOW TO BOTTLE FLIP (ON... where we wondered if anyone was still watching the video at that point, and to comment 44 (Scott's fave number) if they were. Brett then said 44 Club get on board and the rest is history. The 44Club is the official How Ridiculous fan club made up of people who love our videos and watch them right to the very end. We've even got 44 Club merch now! So yeh, that's the story. Pretty random but good fun at the same time.
A big thanks to the awesome crew at the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin for letting us use their 45m leaning tower for our own experiments. If you wanna head out there and check it out, it's not far from Perth where we live: gravitycentre.com.au/leaning-t...

At the end, when you threw the last bowling ball, and it went so much higher, you asked if anyone knew why and could tell you in the comments.... Short answer: Weight already on the trampoline. Long answer: At first the fabric was looser, so when there was nothing on the trampoline, the fabric and springs absorbed more of the energy. The golf balls were not heavy enough, nor spaced out enough to create enough tension, so the golf balls absorbed most of the energy when they were added. Once the first bowling ball was added though, now you have more tension on the fabric and springs. It doesn't necessarily mean that the tighter the fabric the higher the ball will fly; if you pull the fabric too tight, the ball will just go right through it and ruin the springs. But the elasticity of the fabric when it stretches out from the extra weight creates more tension in the fabric and the springs, creating a higher release of energy when the extra ball hits. Think of an elastic. If you stretch it out to where it just begins to tense, it will absorb more energy if something suddenly hits. But, if you tighten it a little, there is less absorption, more tension. Up to a certain degree, the elasticity acts like an energy deflector.

The reason the bowling ball went so much higher that last time was because of the current weight and force already applied to the springs by the golf balls and other bowling ball on the trampoline. Therefor the counter resistance pulling back was already there. Picture that you have a rubber band between two fingers and you lightly pull them apart, the resistance isn't that great, but the harder you pull on the rubber band the greater the resistance. I believe it weakens the overall trampoline but added more forceful resistance when the bowling ball hit it. COOL VID GUYS! KEEP IT UP!
@cooldes4593
@cooldes4593 6 жыл бұрын
If you watch the first bounce, you can see the trampoline itself bounced upward. This means a lot of the energy that couldve gone from the springs to the ball was instead lost to the trampoline. If the trampoline was secured to the ground, you'd have a better launch. On the second launch there was more weight holding the trampoline in place resulting in a higher launch of the ball
@o0Guns0o
@o0Guns0o 6 жыл бұрын
also the pre-loaded weight of the sand+golf balls+bowling ball stiffened up the springs.
@SahilP2648
@SahilP2648 6 жыл бұрын
o0Guns0o not just that. The bowling ball didn't go down as much. Meaning it didn't lose energy by going down a lot. You would see a similar effect if you had a lot smaller trampoline with great material and springs. The other bowling ball effectively made the trampoline size smaller and thus making the upward thrust more powerful.

Why the second ball went higher: The added tension from the first bowling ball and golf balls allowed for a short tension length in the trampoline and springs. This meant more energy was concentrated and sent back into the second ball. The first ball lost more energy due to the dampening effect of the sand and golf balls.

That first bowling ball worked as a counterweight, which raised the second higher. In that place at least. If he had hit the golf balls now, it was the same effect as the first. If, on the other hand, he had hit the first bowling ball, he was ricochet and maybe pieces too. Depends on the hit point.

the bowling ball that was already in it made the trampoline mat tenser. The extra elasticity of the trampoline caused less amounts of force to to be absorbed and more amounts to be enacted on the ball sending it higher

I believe the weight of the other bowling ball held tension on one side, meaning there was less slack to absorb the impact. Kinda like a bouncy ball goes higher when bounced on wood then on a pillow, the pillow has more give but the wood transfers more energy back (conservation of energy, equal and opposite reaction, and all that good stuff).
@willhikearizona
@willhikearizona 6 жыл бұрын
WhodamanHD so the next question is how high would the same bowling ball bounce if you drop it on concrete that has no give to absorb the energy.

I am many years removed from my last Physics class, so I am foggy on the specifics, however: Each example except your own had an element with a fairly high coefficient of elasticity. As it approaches a value of 1, the amount of energy lost approaches 0. Trampoline and Rubber ball probably each have a CoE of ~0.7, whereas in your example neither the Bowling ball nor the concrete likely have a CoE higher than ... say 0.1-0.15. Hope that helps. Cheers.
@whodamanhd2032
@whodamanhd2032 6 жыл бұрын
Will Stone it has to have a little give in order to not have the material absorb it itself. The challenge to make something bounce is to absorb the least amount. In something elastic the energy is stored and then released in the opposite reaction, like a rubber band, but a taunt rope won’t make a good slingshot. Likewise, a brittle piece of concrete wouldn’t either. As stinger said, it’s a happy medium.

If you still want to know why that last one went so high, it was the only one that hit the sweet spot. A round trampoline has a rather large sweet spot in the center. Rectangular trampolines have 2 sweet spots that are pretty small. Just to illustrate, if your mat is 1.5 meters by 2.5 meters, the 2 sweet spots are going to be along the center, 0.75 meters from each end. Length of the mat doesn't affect the distance from the end, but with a longer mat, they are farther apart. A square mat would have 1 sweet spot in the middle, much smaller than the sweet spot on a round mat. Sorry if I'm a bit late with the science.

The last one bounced a lot higher because. A. the weight of the first bowling ball caused the tramp tout sag a bit before impact, this less of the force was absorbed, and more was redirected upwards. And B. The ball hit closer to the edge of the trampoline, which is also the stiffer side and it also absorbed less.

On that last ball drop, the ball bounced higher because it landed on the area of the trampoline that holds the most tension, hence that area has the highest resistance to the downward force of gravity. The weight from the golf balls and the other bowling ball in the center of the trampoline increased the tension along the perimeter of the trampoline (where the spring rate is already higher than the center of the trampoline, because the perimeter has the thickest part of the mat material and also that area is closest to the springs). Take notice to how the second bowling ball bounced off the edge of the mat.

I think the reason it went so high was because the other bowling bowl and the golf balls were weighting down the trampoline, therefore more weight would bring the trampoline down and the returning force would fling the ball higher. Kind of like when people jump on a trampoline together and one person gets launched up when all of then jump at the same time.

The ball bounced higher since the tramp was partially prestretched and so it kinda already has a little extra energy to deliver top that ball on the way back up until it comes back into contact with the stationary balls that were prestretching it in the first place. Cheers!!

The extra weight of the bowling ball, sand, and golf balls sitting on the trampoline helped to dampen some of the energy the springs received. The trampoline therefore didn't voice, which means it didn't use any of the energy that the bowling ball stored in the springs, allowing that energy to be transfered mostly to the bowling ball allowing it to bounce higher
@dtroystopper2
@dtroystopper2 4 жыл бұрын
@9:38 it went higher because the trampoline mat was already under load from the bowling ball and golf balls, therefore it was already hanging a bit lower than it would be with nothing on it. So, when the ball drops and hits the mat, it takes it down further to the ground than it did the first time, which makes it rebound that much more, and send the ball that much higher.

2 points. Once terminal velocity it reached. additional height will make no diffrence. 285mph is approx terminal velocity for a bowling ball. Also the trampoline sitting on the sand gives way into the sand helping the matt keep from tearing. If it was on concrete it may have made a diffrence. Also Jinx, made ya look. no take backs.

My theory on the higher final bounce is.........the combined weight of the golf balls plus the 1st bowling ball, increased the tension on the springs and the tramp itself. As a result, the springs were stretched even further causing a more significant rebound.

Math/physics time: How much force does the trampoline exert on the ball? The potential energy of gravity is given by the equation mgh, where m is mass, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the height of the fall. The potential energy of a spring is 1/2 kx^2, where k is the spring constant and x is the distance the spring is stretched. Furthermore, to find the force exerted by a spring, we use the equation F = -kx (the negative sign indicates that the force is in the opposite direction from the direction of stretching/compressing). Now that we have those basic equations, we can calculate the force. Assuming no energy is lost to air resistance, we can say mgh = 1/2 kx^2, so k = 2mgh/x^2. We can use algebra to plug k into the third equation above, and get F = -2mgh/x. Now all we need to do is plug in numbers for m, g, h, and x. The mass, m, of a bowling ball is apparently around 5 kg. Acceleration due to gravity, g, is about 9.81 meters/(seconds^2). The height, h, is of course 45 meters. The length of stretching, x, is harder to say. It appears to be about waist height at 6:05, and at 6:14, it stretches most of the way to the ground. Thus, I will estimate x to be -0.9 meters. (Negative because upwards is generally defined as the positive direction, so our final force will be positive.) (In the following math equation, x represents "times," due to asterisks being KZfaq's signal for bold/italics.) -2x5x9.81x45/-0.9 = 4900 kg-m / s^2 or 4900 N. (Keep in mind this is approximate, primarily due to air resistance and the approximated value of x.) What does 4900 N mean? For my fellow Americans, it's about 1100 pounds. Also, the force of gravity on your body is your mass times the acceleration of gravity, or m*g. If average human mass is 70 kg, then 70 kg x 9.81 m/s^2 is fairly close to 700 N. That means, at the bowling ball's lowest point, the trampoline is exerting about 7 times the force of gravity on the average human. The bottom line: If a trampoline can handle 7 average adult humans standing still on it, it can handle a bowling ball dropped from 45 meters.

Sam Walko don’t forget, the mass of 7 guys would be distributed throughout the surface of the trampoline, where as the force being applied by just the bowling ball is in just one location. Even though the forces equal, putting the same amount of force in a single point could potentially cause damage.

I could be wrong, but I believe the reason the second ball bounced so much higher has to do with the weight of the other balls pulling the elastic tighter, making it less absorptive. When the elastic is slack, it absorbs more of the ball's kinetic energy, thus slowing the ball down. Slack elastic also allows the ball to travel further down as the elastic stretches, thus requiring more energy from the elastic to propel it back up. The more taught elastic absorbs less of the ball's kinetic energy and doesn't flex as far down thus requiring less energy to propel it up, which means the ball has far more kinetic energy to achieve a much higher arc.

The second bowling ball went higher because of the weight of the first bowling ball and the golf balls. The trampolin was under stronger pressure already just by the weight on it. Plus you have a counter movement on the trampolin: when the falling ball comes up again after hitting the trampolin, the other balls are going down cause their ground (the trampolin) is pulled down by the first ball. So while the falling ball comes up again (with the trampolin) the before resting balls are going down and stretching the trampolin again downwards. So it enhances the movement ... dont know if you get it cause english is not my first language and i usually dont need to explain physics :D This works for example with people on the trampolin too. Take 3 people and arrange in a line. Let the one in the middle jump and right before he touches the trampolin again the other 2 have to jump up and land as hard as they can on the trampolin at the exact moment when the one in the middle is at the lowest point (stretches the trampolin the most). You will katapult him into the sky ;)

It went higher because the ball landed next to the edge. The fabric does less work and it’s mainly using the springs. Another key point is that it did not flex enough to hit the ground so it wasn’t dampened by the sand on impact. Most importantly however is I have no clue what I’m talking about and if you read this I hope you have a nice day!
