Congrats on coaching Adelphi. As someone who just turned 65, I decided to move faster, and when I do, I bowl better. Great advice, Arthur.

Thank you! Last week, I was told to shorten my approach (cos I was apparently too fast when starting from farther back). I tried that the next time I bowled, but discovered that I wasn't getting the same sort of pin action as I had (probably cost of the lost ball speed). I went back to the longer (and faster) approach and saw an immediate difference.

Great advice! Speed and power come from your waist down. The ball should dictate your foot speed not the other way around. Keep those feet moving to keep up with your loose arm swing. Slowing up your feet will make you muscle the arm thus taking away repeatability and accuracy. Good work here Arthur!

I found just the opposite to be true. Slowing up my feet loosened up my swing, vastly improving my accuracy and repeatability. Fast feet shortened my backswing and made me yank on the ball.

Not sure about the whole slowing feet down thing, but I noticed that if I'm in a tournament or playing a long sport pattern, moving up on approach 1-2 feet has my ball speed drop about 1 mph on average and gets the ball to turn into the pocket at a better angle increasing my strike %. Bowled 681 last week in league for reference.

First off, congratulations on your new coaching gig. Second, thank you for all these valuable tips. I last bowled in a sanctioned league over 22 years ago and suffered a wrist injury that forced me out of bowling. Recently I decided to give bowling another shot and began using your videos to learn how to properly release my ball, fix my timing and I have to say, my game is much better now than it was back when I stopped bowling. I still have a lot to improve on, but I’m headed in the right direction. Wishing you much success with Adelphi.

By watching Parker Bohn I finally decided to give the 4-step approach another try after all these years. I found that my body wanted me to move my feet more quickly which I never did with my 5-steps. My ball speed increased probably 1.5 to 2 mph. Saw my spare shots get up to 18 and 19 mph. My accuracy began to improve and my average began to improve as well. The ball got into a better roll with my hand staying behind the ball a bit easier. Just like PBATommy I'm doing much better. My sagging average is now up 15 pins. I have a bit more confidence when I get up there for my next frame. :) Best of luck at Adelphi coach!

Feet speed is precipitated or determined by swing. A higher backswing as well as a loose backswing will need more time to get to the foul line than a short muscled swing. Simple physics. It's all about tempo and timing.

What I notice that works for me is to go against what other players have told me, ig hold the ball higher for more speed, I find that my speed drops when I do that. So I hold it lower for more speed. Since I am a five step player, I keep my non-bowling hand on the ball until end of the 2nd step, beginning of the 3rd step. I'm not sure exactly when my non-bowling hand gets off the ball, but I can feel when it is too early or too late. I go as fast as I can and still maintain balance in motion. My motto is Speed Kills..... The Pins! My tempo is something like slow slow go go go and actually my armswing speed determines my foot speed. IMHO too many bowlers try to match their armswing to their feet rather than the inverse. Matching your foot speed to your armswing speed. Congrats on your coaching position with Adelphi!

Its true but not all Bowlers can work the same way. Last February, I won a January Bowler of the Month Tournament by slowing my feet down. But then by May, my average collapsed rapidly. Last week I won a League Night and after I shot an awful 134, I practiced on one lane and I decided to move my feet faster and it worked as my scores increased to 172 and 168.

There not one pro bowler on tv that looks like they take there fitness seriously. There either really skinny or fat. There’s not one that in what ppl would consider athletic looking. I say the because I slowed down and my ball speed went up. From low 16 to high 17-18. But I’m in great shape.

Slowing my feet down improved my timing by allowing me to have a much more relaxed, non-muscled swing. It allows me to have greater control over my tempo and to get the ball to the flat spot at the right time. It has made a tremendous improvement in my game. As for bowlers being athletes, lol. I love bowling but physical fitness is about the last thing on most bowlers minds, even at the professional level. For an example of slow feet, watch these guys named Dom Barrett and Chris Barnes. Heck, even Belmo doesn't have fast feet. They don't have speed or accuracy problems.

I also subscribe to high ball speed. But that is achieved by arm swing not approach speed. If I walk too fast I get less rotation and hook so I can't throw it as hard as when I don't walk too fast.

From my experience this is not exactly a correct "myth". People are not saying that in general slower makes you more accurate. Otherwise we would see all pros do it. People say that when you have a bad day and nothing works and you feel you don't even know how to ball , THEN try TEMPORARILY to slow down and ONLY until you find your bearings. Also slowing the feet that bad day, doesn't immediately mess up your timing because your brain knows to adjust temporarily. Besides when we slow feet , it is obvious that the person will start the swing at a different time to help with timing. Besides, what happens when you want to throw the ball slower anyway because the lane demands ? Does it mean you are going to mess up your timing? No, you adjust your approach. So to me this is a non existent myth as described in the video. The only thin i agree with, is that IN GENERAL you don't want to lose speed unless absolutely necessary.

Interesting how you say to get the ball into the swing earlier. Im a two hander with no push-away (form is very similar to Jesper Svensson) and I get the ball into the swing later than many because of the no push-away. Also on JR pro-shops video when Frank Buffa is coaching Jimoo, Frank says to get the ball into the swing later, which will increase the power and speed of the delivery. Is this right for a two hander? Because when I get the ball into the swing too early, I tend to muscle the ball too much and not let my hop step and shoulder rotation bring the ball into the backswing.

I'm a fan of Art and always will be, but he is wrong about this, at least for the majority of bowlers. At least 80% of bowlers ALREADY HAVE fast feet. They are either decisively early with their timing and double dribble the ball, or they are decisively late and will loft the ball to the arrows because of how much they squeeze/muscle. Telling these bowlers to move faster is going to do more harm than good. Combine this with another indefensible fact, that fact being that at least 80% of bowlers are speed dominant/RPM challenged (which means they do not have enough RPMs to match their ball speed) and all of a sudden anyone who takes this advice will go from struggling with leaving light 2s/weak 10s to leaving 5-7-10 and bucket variations...if they even sniff the head pin at all. Art has proven to be one of the best coaches out there, but he needs to revisit his argument that a faster ball yields more carry. This is simply not true AT ALL if your RPMs aren't above 300-350 or so. Bowling is a game of angles, NOT momentum. It USED to be a game of momentum but that was when stone 5s were a thing (up until the 1990s or so).

Yes in most cases.. I’m 70 years old so fast feet doesn’t work for me anymore !! You’re talking about the younger generation which is great by all means. But the older a bowler gets the slower the feet are. We don’t like it but unfortunately that’s the way it is.. But I still bowl five nights plus tournament on the weekends for the last 32 years.. you need to do a video for the older generation on fast or slow feet.. I’m still very competitive and still can beat 80 percent of the young guns not bragging just more experience and a great mentality game even at 70 years of age..
