This video shows one way to replicate square channels which come on the classic English car Rover P6 3500 1974 seats.
I have a customer that complains about his owncar seats. He says they are too hard while he is sitting on. To solve this issue, I am testing on this sample a durable high resielence foam. This foam acts as a spring because it recuperates its shape instantly and would last forever. The most important characteristic it is soft enough.
Memory Eva foam would have worked much better to shape the square pleats, but somehow this padding is rigid for long trips.
The foam I am using is 1/2" of an inch thick. To ease the sewing process the cut foam strips are tufted after the cover is finished.
For this demonstration I am using natural automotive leather.
An important tip to stand out is how I inserted in an opening I did in the foam base a 4 mm thick steel wire. A thinner steel wire is housed in a listing bag sewn down on reverse side of the cover. It is hogringed to this thick wire to pull the material downwards and give a curved shape on top view.
The original Rover seats come with fabric strips that cross down through and are fastened to the seat frame. This is a furniture method. Sometimes, it is not advisable on car seats because these pulling strips are suffering tension constantly.
I hope you enjoy and find this video useful!

Dear Lynn, Nice to hear from you, again!!! You are always so generous with your commentaries!!! This is only a training in order to find and test better way to approach a real Rover P3500 1974 car seats my customer has in Victoria, Australia. Hopefully, he will send the whole car seats down here to Mexico. The original seat pleats have a kind of felt/rubber like padding. My customer wants something different to make them softer. The foam I tested in this sample is utilized for tennis shoes' insoles. It seems good but I am going to look for something else superior to duplicate the seat covers OEM. The leather material will be ordered from Wildman & Bugby supplier in the UK: This is the possible dominant colour in combination with red pipíng: wildmanbugby.co.uk/product/cardinal-barley-whitecream First quality Tenara thread will be used and will be ordered from Sailrite USA: www.sailrite.com/Tenara-Lifetime-Thread-Red-Lubricated-8oz-Cone-1-595Yds Thanks so much for watching the videos!

@Cechaflo 2 жыл бұрын

The work is superb as always, It would be possible to use thick felt instead of foam rubber strips, then there would be no strong folds in the place of tightening, this technology was used in old cars.

Dear friend/colleague, I really appreciate your kind commentary! I also watch your videos and appreciate your excellent professional jobs. I am aware the felt material would make the pleats look more square and much better. BTW, I have some felt material in my shop. I am doing these samples/training beforehand because I would do a job on a Rover P6 3500 1974 automobile. The problem is my customer feels the original pleats are too hard while driving long trips. Perhaps, by adding a layer of high resilience foam on top of the felt would solve the issue.

I've never glued in a rod before....when the 1994 Mustang came out and we did the seats changed from 1993 and prior....I ended up redoing things the way I thought made the most sense and we sewed a loop and created a channel same way you did here...but added a rod to the bottom to make sure the contours would keep the same shape over time. The 1994 mustang seats seemed to have had a spray in foam that just pushed the pattern out and stayed to those dimensions...cuz we had to peel the foam away from the leather and that was weird for me to see...then later a lot more manufacturers started having either glued in inserts or velcro loops... I wonder if it is due to less time assembling at the factory?

Dear Jeffrey, Thanks for sharing with us useful information! After disassembling some car seats I realized hard steel wires were embedded in a channel. Sometimes, they are behind a mesh to add more resistance to fastening. Of course these steel wires and mesh included were put together while melting liquid foam into a mold. The way I use is an artisan way I consider a good option because I have done several car seats and those steel wires do not take off. My customers are still happy with their seats after some years passed. I used this method on this bucket chair I still have it as a sample in my shop. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9-ajayCmMuRhIk.html Regarding the use of velcro I can say it is just another practical method to fasten the covers and give desired shapes. Car manufacturers are always on the vanguard with the searching and application of new materials in regard of car interiors and others.

This is sample/test I sent to a customer in Australia. The real seats are for a Rover P6 3500 1974. The plastic pipe is 3 mm thick. I used a skived leather strip 1 mm thick to wrap it around the pipe. Consequently the final piping was slightly thicker.

@@Cechaflo Have you considered a firm latex instead of foam? Or gluing a softer one the last 5-7cm? I don’t know about foam but with latex at least the bond won’t give. I had also been going to ask how late curled horse hair was used in car seats? It’s certainly has both support and give, though the only way to square I think would be to pre-make a muslin frame for it. I’ve seen those and the idea opens some interesting possibilities!

I’ll respectfully disagree here. I’m a novice still but I learn so much because the camera views are so good. He’s so detailed in how he measures, and how he does allowances for the foam. Like this video, many have text that explains non-demonstrated information and with detail of what he’s using. As I have to closely watch what he’s doing anyway, I don’t mind having text to read - I know I’m going to rewind so I can review portions anyhow. As always though, what works for many may not work for all.
