Here's how to frame a boxed soffit on the eave and gable end of a building. This is how I did my pole barn workshop, and at the end of the video I also show a couple other ways to frame the soffit.
I like to box my eave soffit out to the edge of the gable overhang. I think this creates a nice detail.

Looks good. When cutting those corners, if you cut one side at 45 and leave the other one at 90, it’ll still look like a mitred corner but no risk of having any gap there. Rare that a corner is exactly at 90 degrees.

I'm a trim specialist and I have to agree. We call it ears in the trim world. Always leave ears on any flashing bends. It prevents gaps in the event the framework isnt perfect.

I use my big snips too , instead of setting up a saw or table . My first job was vinyl siding and I would cut the whole house with snips so when I do a little soffit, you can chop them up pretty quick especially if it’s vinyl.

You could've ran your fascia all one piece wrapping around your soffit box without cutting that short piece, also instead of cutting (2) 45 cuts for your bends cut (1) 90 and (1) 45 closes it up better looks nicer.

Nice attention to details, again! One advice if I can. You put soffit on the lean-to. It might be inviting for critters like squirrels and birds. I had this issue with my previous lean-to wood shed. I can see you had your toque. So it was getting cold! I was bout to forget... Congratulations for the upcoming 1000 subs! Thanks for sharing Corey!

Hey Joe. I'm am a little bit concerned about red squirrels. They've been getting in my shed. I plan on covering the the bottom of the rafters under the lean-to to hopefully seal them out. Getting cold for sure when I was filming this one. Even colder when I was installing the siding. I'm getting close to 1k and it sure feels good. I've been pumping out the videos over the last few months it's nice knowing people enjoy them and find them helpful. Thanks for watching Joe

How's she goin'? Nice job on the soffit. I'm used to vinyl but with the aluminum you can cut and bend a lot easier. I see you barn is coming along good. You already have equipment stored in it!!! It's a big barn, but soon will be too small!!! Take 'er easy!!!
@CountryFamily

I'm trying not to put too much stuff in there because I want to finish the inside off completely first. I'll never get the ceiling and walls finished if I start loading it up. 😄 I've got big plans for the workshops. I keep telling my wife and kids, "it's not a storage barn, it's my workshop" . Thanks for watching Mike.

Nice Vedio. Do you know what type of contractor does this kind of work? I have part of both soffit & Fascia blown out with storm and framing is rotten. I need someone to repair in the house but not sure who to called?
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 4 жыл бұрын
You could try a contractor that specializes in exteriors. Search for window and siding installers. They should be able to help with the soffit and fascia.

Which edge on the F channel did you follow, with the snapped line being the (bottom of fascia board) top side of the soffit. I just did one and I had to snap the line about .625" higher than the bottom of the fascia board so I could put the top edge of the F channel to the chalk line. It seems like if the snapped line was at the same level as the bottom of the fascia board you wouldn't be able to see the chalked line because the F channel would be covering it. Maybe the F channel you used was different than mine. Mine had the slotted holes for nailing in a strip above the channel part of the F.
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 5 жыл бұрын
No, I snapped the line even with the bottom of the fascia. It's not ideal, because you can't see the line very well but in the end it worked out. Ideally I should have measured down to follow the bottom flange of the F-channel for the chalk-line. Thanks for the comment.

Good video. What size brads are you using to nail the soffit to the facia board?
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pat, I'm using staples here as they hold better than brads. They are 1/4" crown and I believe they were 1" or 1 1/4".

Good luck repairing that soffit material....you used nails to hold it in. I don't think you're suppose to nail soffit in....it slides in. You can't take it apart now. I have to repair lights in a soffit ....how would I take what you did apart? Try puttig the faciar on first and sliding the soffit sheets in....this way I can use a zip tool to make small repairs.
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Well the intent is not to ever take it apart. If you didn't nail it the wind would rip it down during the first storm. I have taken soffit down on occasion by clipping the nail heads off with a pair of diagonal cutters. To pull the fascia out enough to get the soffit out. I'm not sure how you would hold the fascia in place if you didn't nail it.

What gauge steel is your roof and siding? Great videos
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the siding is from Menard's and is 29 gauge. The roofing is from the Amish and I know it's a heavier gauge but I don't remember if it's 24 or 26.

What kind of drip edge did you use on your eaves?
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 4 жыл бұрын
It's just the standard drip edge very similar to this one at Mendards: www.menards.com/main/building-materials/roofing-soffits-gutters/metal-roofing/10-roof-edge/beige1564095-60/p-1444448466396.htm Really the only reason I needed a drip edge with the metal roof is to hold the top of the aluminum fascia in place. Otherwise the metal roof sticks out enough to act like a drip edge.

These really are low quality construction materials that fade and get easily damaged. Bugs and vermin make homes behind metal - use Azek, etc. Better to make it look beautiful, strong and seal against bugs&vermins.
@CountryFamily
@CountryFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Aluminum soffit and fascia are pretty standard for the majority of residential buildings. I'm not building a mansion here. You must have a stake in Azek. 😆
